Book arrived on time. PMI's books are very hard to read. It's like they are written to make the field look more like a 'science". It is a science, but the book should be comprehensible to someone other than a professor that teaches it. To learn program management, I recommend the text from the course I took at Brandeis, Program Management for Improved Business Results by Dragan Z. Milosevec, Russ J. Martinelli, and James M. Waddell, ISBN: 978-0-471-78354-1. This is a decent reference to have around, but the book I just referenced is readble and much more comprehensive.

Better than PMBOK but fell short of a Rita Mulcahey book

This book did a great job of defining what a PgMP is. It did a fair job of delineating differences between program and project management. Lacking in contextual real-life examples, as well as tables and figures. This book was a much easier read than that Encyclopedia/Manual that is PMBOK. I gave it 4 stars because it is easy to understand and not a typical boring textbook. I definitely would give it 5 stars if it included some relatable scenarios and additional tables/figures.

About the Author
Michael D. Bordo is professor of economics and director of the Center for Monetary and Financial History at Rutgers University, New Jersey. He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, Cambridge, Massachusetts. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago. He has published many articles in leading journals in monetary economics and economic history. Recent publications include A Retrospective on the Bretton Woods International Monetary System (1993, with Barry Eichengreen), The Defining Moment: The Great Depression and the American Economy in the Twentieth Century (1998, with Claudia Goldin and Eugene White), Essays on the Gold Standard and Related Regimes (Cambridge University Press, 1999; paperback 2005), and Globalization in Historical Perspective (2003, with Alan Taylor and Jeffrey Williamson). He is also a founding and managing editor of the Cambridge University Press Studies in Macroeconomic History series.

William Roberds is a research economist and policy advisor with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. His areas of responsibility include basic research and policy analysis. Dr Roberds's research focuses primarily on the fields of payment systems, macroeconomics and econometrics. His research has been published in leading economic journals including the Journal of Monetary Economics, the International Economic Review and the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, as well as in Federal Reserve System publications. Dr Roberds joined the Bank in July 1987. Previously he was an assistant professor at Brown University (1982-84) and an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis (1984-87). About the Author
Martha Albertson Fineman is an internationally recognized law and society scholar and a leading authority on family law and feminist jurisprudence. Fineman is founder and director of the Feminism and Legal Theory Project, which was inaugurated in 1984 at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is a Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Law at Emory University. Professor Fineman has authored three books: The Autonomy Myth: A Theory of Dependency (New Press, 2004); The Neutered Mother, The Sexual Family and Other Twentieth Century Tragedies (Routledge, 1995); and The Illusion of Equality: The Rhetoric and Reality of Divorce Reform (Univ. of Chicago Press, 1991). She has also edited six books, including Ashgate's forthcoming Children's Rights, and has written many book chapters and scholarly papers. Jack E. Jackson is a Ph.D. Candidate in Political Theory at UC Berkeley. He received his J.D. from Cornell Law School where he was recipient of the Freeman Award for Civil-Human Rights and a member of the Order of the Coif. Jackson served as an Ella Baker Fellow at the Center for Constitutional Rights and has taught at the University of Miami Schoolof Law. He recently published "Erasures and Imaginings" in Critical Sense: A Journal of Political and Cultural Theory (2005). Adam P. Romero holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he won the Kelley Prize and was a Coker Fellow and a director of the Complex Federal Litigation Clinic. He received his A.B. from Cornell University, graduating summa cum laude and winning the Sherman-Bennett Prize. Previously a law clerk to Hon. M. Margaret McKeown of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and a fellow at the Williams Institute, UCLA School of Law, Adam's current research considers the privileging of family in law and society, especially as relevant to significantly disabled adults who live disconnected from family.

This is a wonderful collection of essays discussing the differences and convergences between two fields (although there is nothing easy about such categorizations). I am writing my dissertation in this area and this book was truly inspiring and provocative!

The book concludes with an exploration of what answers such a theory of naturalism can provide to questions about values and God.

Great analysis of "emergence" and science-based "naturalistic" view of man

As evidenced by global focus on environment, "naturalism" (i.e., view that man is "in" & only "in" nature, in need of no explanation beyond natural processes) is arguably the next step from now-conventional "post-modern" skepticism. Indeed, evolutionary social science (i.e., understanding human psychology, society & culture as driven by evolutionary dynamics) is all over the news, science blogs, & academic literature.

The key to understanding all this is concept of "emergence", how complex systems arise from simpler components, & exhibit behavior unpredictable from components. This book carefully works through "emergence" from fundament levels of physics to human social behavior. Fascinating & authoritatively documented.

Conclusion even goes on to argue "naturalism" doesn't rule out a higher power (or whatever), just one that's not somehow "in" nature. Interesting, even if a difficult sell to those disinclined to mysticism. Overall, a positive view of a universe in which just "being here" is it's own reward..

The volume skillfully illuminates the daily lives of a diverse range of Jews who suffered under Nazism, their coping strategies, and their efforts to assess the implications for the present and future of the persecution they faced during this period. Volume II begins with Kristallnacht in 1938 and continues through the Jewish flight out of Germany, the onset of World War II, the forced relocation of the Jews of Europe to the East, and the formation of Jewish ghettos, particularly in Poland.

The twelve chapters, divided into four parts, track the trajectory of German expansion and anti-Jewish policies chronologically, attesting to a clear progression of persecution over time and space. At the same time, they reflect the vast differences in the responses of Jewish communities, groups, and individuals within and beyond the Germans' grasp, differences that resulted both from the unevenness of the Reich's policy toward Jews as well as the varied backgrounds, traditions, expectations, and life histories of Jews affected by German policy. This volume raises essential questions, such as: What was the spectrum of Jewish perceptions and actions under Nazi domination? How did Jews affected directly, or others standing on the outside, view the situation? In what ways were Jews able to influence their own fate under persecution? What role did Jewish tradition play in how the present and future were interpreted? The answers inherent in the documents are often varied or inconclusive; nonetheless these sources add considerably to our understanding of the Holocaust.

Alexandra Garbarini is associate professor of history and chair of the Program in Jewish Studies at Williams College. Emil Kerenji is Applied Research Scholar at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.Jan Lambertz is a historian and served on the research team of the Independent Historians Commission on the Role of the German Foreign Office during National Socialism and after 1945. Avinoam Patt is Philip D. Feltman Professor of Modern Jewish History at the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford.
