Dichotomy between author and students

I used this text for a course on material structures in which we covered most of this book for about half the semester and then moved onto topics such as polymer structure, liquid crystals, and basic quantum mechanics behind orbitals and the formation of atomic bonds. I must say the most painful parts of the course were those covered in this book. We used another text created by the professor in lieu of chapter one, and the difference was remarkable. Fairly easy topics are shrouded in heavy text and lack of clear explanations. I had alternate sources for each and every chapter in the book because the book never provided enough information to truly grasp the material.

Most sections go as follows: historical and other non-important details mixed with some useful information, then an introduction to a new topic and why it's useful, a short but inadequate explanation of the topic, skips the section where a student would learn to arrive at a conclusion, states the conclusion without a real explanation. This approach works fine for some chapters and horribly for others (the Ewald sphere chapter is a nightmare).

I'm sure this seems great to someone who already knows the material (it proved awesome for studying for the final since my mind was filling in the blanks in the text), but it really is lacking as a teaching text. It's not set up like a textbook (no examples and few exercises), and should not be used as one.

Not bad

This book represents a fair introduction to the world of crystallography and crystal structure determination. The chapters on structure determination are the best, although some of the more advanced material, e.g. EBSD, is lightly sketched, and should perhaps have been omitted.

The early chapters are somewhat more problematic: much is stated about crystal structures without justification, and this makes for a hard and often unilluminating read. Overall, though, the author has succeeding in writing a reasonable introductory text for a difficult field.

basic crystallography

An excellent basic textook on crystallography, which is a absolutely necessary discipline for everybody concerned with the solid state and encompassing disciplines such as materials science, metallurgy, solid state physics, inorganic and organic chemistry, macromolecular biochemistry, mineralogy and petrology, etc. The textbook represents a solid introduction to the field and a nice primer to be used in introductory courses. It is to be followed by the more complete "Fundamentals of Crystallography" by C. Giacovazzo and co-authors.

Great study of Bernard

Anthony Lane has written one of the most definitive and captivating studies on the work of Bernard of Clairvaux as it pertains to the Cross of Christ.

He starts by reminding the reader that most people tend to think of Bernard as simply a monk or mystic.. but not theologian. And yet, as Lane points out, Bernard made close to 700 references to the cross in his writings. Although Bernard himself didn't care for the word "theology," Lane clearly shows that he was a firm theologian of the cross by examining some of his sermons and his actual teaching on the cross.

Part 3 of the book, TEACHING OF THE CROSS, is the longest and most detailed, and chapter 10 of that section, CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS, is for me the best and most thorough.

Lane points out that Bernard didn't care for Abelard's teaching on the cross, but he's also honest to admit that Bernard flat out falsely accused Abelard of denying that Christ died to set sinners free.

Ultimately, Lane shows the reader that for Bernard, known primarily as a monk and mystic, the importance of the cross is seen.."precisely by the way he mentions it so often." (pg.50)

Anyone wanting to become more familiar with the writings and sermons of Bernard of Clairvaux will not be disappointed with this excellent resource.

The Wesleyan Way of Christ

James Harnish has put together a wonderful resource for people in the Wesleyan-Methodist tradition, especially for United Methodists. Participants will explore:

1) the goal of Christian discipleship
2) the role of grace in discipleship
3) the role of spiritual disciplines in discipleship.

I would summarize Harnish's view this way: Christians grow in love of God and neighbor through intentional use of spiritual disciplines within the context of a Christian community. While the book has some elements of Methodist history, it is NOT primarily a history class but a guide to what John Wesley called "practical divinity," or practical, experiential Christian faith. Harnish focuses on the spiritual disciplines mentioned in the United Methodist membership vow: prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness.

I used this with two different adult groups and both appreciated it. This booklet is the basic group companion. The Daily Workbook is for individual use on a daily basis. Participants should be encouraged to use the daily workbook but not required. The daily workbook is a good resource for discussion leaders to garner discussion material.

This was an AWESOME small group study

This was the most Methodist, most theologically accessible, study I've done in our United Methodist Church for some time. I appreciated the author's approach to Wesleyan theology of a "practical divinity" -- a faith that is both believed and lived out. The long-term Methodists in the group appreciated learning something. And the non-Methodists among us gained an appreciation for Wesley's theology.

It was the winter of 1902; South African park ranger Harry Wolhuter was on horseback, patrolling the area for poachers at Kruger National Park. Little did he know, he was also being stalked. Out of nowhere, two huge male lions pounced on Harry's horse, knocking the man to the ground. The horse ran off, leaving Harry to fend for himself. One of the lions lunged at him - piercing deep into his flesh and bones - and began to drag him far into the jungle to finish him off. Harry's only hope for survival was the small sheath he carried on his right hip, and he could not reach it easily. With a few quick stabs to the massive beast's chest, he waited and prayed for the best. Miraculously, after spending hours in a tree - drifting in and out of consciousness - with only his terrier standing between him and the second lion, he survived the attack and lived to tell his story.

But others have not been so lucky at Kruger National Park. Today, Mozambican refugees are being eaten alive in great numbers as they attempt to walk the Kruger, yet no one seems to know about these massacres, and nothing is being done to stop them. More lion attacks have been documented in the past year than ever before.

And so begins the investigative journey of journalist Robert Frump. In July of 2002, his plane touched down on the airfields west of Kruger, and what he discovered was beyond belief.

The Man-Eaters of Edenuncovers the simple truth, that more people are eaten by lions today, than ever before.

God's In Frump's Details

I found this to be a most intriguing read. At the very start of the book Frump gets your heart racing with the frightening tale of a corpse-spotting in Kruger. Even more gruesome lion-kill accounts create the intermittent suspense that boils up at just the right times throughout this book. That suspense is held together tightly with an honest and well-researched history of the state of game in African park and the plight of the African people who, victims of endless war, must unfairly confront Kruger's lions--the perfect killing machines. What's more, Frump helps the reader grapple with the natural guilt that comes from enjoying the suspense in this tragedy by tackling the sad moral quandry: lion or man. And perhaps best of all, it's a superbly crafted tale that is told in Frump's crips writing style.

This is an intriguing book because it's many-layered. On the one hand, it's certainly about man-eating lions. On the other, it's about waves of refugees willing to risk those lions on foot, unarmed and in the middle of the African night, to escape war and poverty. And the question of what you do, officially, in a famous wildlife preserve when your most charismatic tourist attractions are regularly killing and eating desperate political and economic refugees. Answer: You cover it up. You make sure your own tourists are safe (?) and you cover up the rest. There are no clear villains in this book- not the lions, who are just doing what lions do; not the refugees, looking for a viable life; not even the Kruger officials, who have no taste for the wholesale slaughter of animals in their charge. There is one hero, who does what he can in a refreshingly non-official, commonsensical way to help the refugees better their chances of staying alive.

I enjoyed Frump's style and narrative persona; he is no hero himself, out of his element and as scared of lions as anyone else. He's tantalized by the idea of crossing Kruger on foot and at night himself, but honestly relieved when he can find no one willing to guide him. He doesn't offer any easy answers and few judgements.

It's also humbling to realize how utterly helpless human beings still are when separated from our technology and set afoot in the dark among predators we must have known intimately for hundreds of thousands of years.

A fast read

Flissy was shipped off to stay with her Aunt and Uncle in Maine, while her parents are back in Europe fighting. Not a good time as WWII is going on. Maine is a Big change from London.

Now that Flissy has adjusted and that is a thank you to Derek. He was adopted by Flissy's relatives. Derek is trying to find his biological father and wants Flissy's help. Things get interesting when Derek finds his father. Also what is Flissy's Uncle hiding? Did I mention that Flissy's parents are spies?

I thought this was a cute book. I have not read The Romeo and Juliet Code but you don't have to read it prior to reading Romeo Blue. This book can be read as a stand alone novel.

I liked Flissy and her British accent. At times she acted older then her age but then she would do something that would quickly show just how young she is. I also like the age that Derek was of thirteen. That age when teens are starting to grow up but at the same time are still kids. The romance between Flissy and Derek is at the puppy love stage.

You can tell that the author really had the young readers in mind when she wrote this book. She kept the story light without bogging it down with too many details and the two main characters relatable. A fast read.

Book respects young adult readers.

This book takes place in America during the period of World War 2 and the principle family in the book is deeply involved in the war effort in many different ways and this to some extent includes the children. However, there are also family things going on including love, loss, fun and humor - so the plot is not overwhelmed with focus on the war. The only thing a bit unrealistic is that every single adult in the book has an important role in the war even if it is just entertaining the troops. What I like best about the book is that author Stone respects her characters and her readers. There are important issues dealt with here but she does not talk down to her young readers. I have not read her previous books and to me this was a good stand alone young adult novel.

Wonderful.

I loved Phoebe Stone's The Romeo and Juliet Code, set during World War II - and Romeo Blue, the sequel, was irresistible. In the first book, Felicity - Flissy - the narrator, is bright, funny, and heart-wrenching, as she struggles with more than any kid should have on her plate: a sudden wartime translocation from England to Maine, a difficult family, parents doing espionage in Europe, and a wholly unexpected father. Romeo Blue takes it all a step farther, as the trauma of war moves closer to home, and Flissy has issues of her own: divided loyalties, a budding romance, and all the pains of growing up. There's a marvelous assortment of characters, among them Uncle Gideon, who turns out to be much more than a kindly and creative schoolteacher, the delightful Auntie-Mame-like Aunt Miami, and many more. A lovely and wonderful book. Read them both.
