A Scientific View of Synchronicty

The author is a former chemist who had a mid life change of profession and became an analytical psychologist. He has continued to study hard science at the same time that he has become an important thinker and leader in the world of analytical psychology. He is now president elect and soon to be president of the International Association for analytical psychology, the professional organization of Jungian analysts around the world. At the same time that he has been working and traveling for the international association, he has had the time and energy to study emergent phenomena and to develop the concept of synchronicity in relationship to modern science. The book is the series of lectures that he gave for the Faye Lectures at Texas A&M. In this book he shows how Jung's concept of synchronicity demonstrates the basic nature of archetypal theory, the ground of Jung's theories. In later chapters he demonstrates how the concept of synchronicity can be seen in clinical practice. For those readers who are interested in the absolutely latest thinking on synchronicity and its practical application, this book is a must. Highest Recommendation.

A decidedly positivistic turn on a fascinating subject

Throughout his writings, Jung was always asking, there is the three, so where is the fourth? While often referring to the Trinitarian Archetype, Jung seemed at times to eschew it for the Quaternity, where a static state was realized in the symmetrical symbolism of the Four...as realized in the Circle/Square Mandala being a representation of the Self.

Beginning with Erdinger, perhaps, the Three was first illuminated as being asymmetrical and dynamic. This author perhaps grasps the same conclusion, realizing the importance of breaking symmetry in order for emergence to occur.

And emergence into the field is what the subject matter, Synchronicity, is all about.

The argument goes, classical deductive Physics ala Newton, where cause and effect are the two necessary factors against the backdrop of Absolute Space and Absolute Time, was incomplete and more, too fragmentary. The sciences were resolute each in their expression, yet seldom explained or even empathized with one another. The binary aspect of Cause/Effect, Light/Dark, Space/Time carried over into Descartes' radical dualism of the soul and body.

The time was right for a more unitary, inductive worldview to break the now age old deductive reasoning of the previous centuries. Thus the discovery Light was neither particle or wave, but both, there was not Time, or Space, but Spacetime. In Faraday's lab there was the electric, then the magnetic, then the electromagnetic.

Once again, the new physics effected the picture one had of the human soul. Rather than there being a radical difference between Mind and Body, there was found to be a unitary bond between the two...where each were found to be operating differently metaphysically. Synchronistically, one could say. Just as the body could take on many shapes and motions, the mind could take on many meanings and thoughts.

In this nice book, the author doesn't concern himself or us with grandiose themes and examples of Synchronicity, but rather observes how Synchronicity unfolds into our day to day world of Space and Time, Cause and Effect, still the harbingers of popular consciousness. Examples provided include Emergence, Empathy, and Kairos, or 'timing'. Although this tends to elucidate the subject, my one complaint is Synchronicity is looked at from mostly a scientific view, and little to nigh is explained through the psychoanalytic lense.

That said, the book does end with examples both good and evil of Synchronicity where it is shown to be the harbinger of good and ill. Synchronicity, the author warns and reminds, is not all Good all the Time.

A wise, erudite writing on a tough subject we are just beginning to understand, in my humble opinion!

The personalized life of individuation processes and science.

I read the book (and purchased extra copies as gifts. Its wonderfully well written so I give it 4 stars. However Jung's The Psychology of the Unconscious Mind presents basically the same idea: i.e., that there is meaning behind every action in a person's life, that nothing a person does is without meaning, context and purpose; nothing that happens is 'chance'.

The idea of synchronicity as a natural aspect of a life process was difficult to introduce in Jung's lifetime because he was a scientist, but this may be a better time to re-introduce Jung's theory that a process of individuation exists.

Many non-professionals (like myself) do not know enough about the origination of depth psychology in Jung's life as a trip he took into his own mind; a journey he took while he lived and wrote his Collected Work. The whole life of his mind was different, which is evidenced in the final chapters of Memories, Dreams and Reflections; The Red Book and his Seven Sermons to the Dead. He was two minds in one body, imo. Joseph Cambray has the expertise to bind both of Jung's lives into one life. Books such as this one illuminate the individualized path but do not explain it in depth. But the book will perhaps save other persons from feeling the kind of isolation that I felt in the beginning when I began to experience the change of life, in a surprising real world situation. I felt painfully depersonalized at first. I didn't know anything about Jung or psychology. The history of psychology is older than what Freud and Jung wrote down.

What exactly is a 'synchronicity' in real life? Here's an example of a simple event; it happened to me not too long ago: I'm in a hurry to get home, because I want to watch Dr. Phil but I'm stuck in traffic. I look at my clock which says 3:14. Just after I've read the clock, the car beside me moves ahead and I notice his license tab: 314 TOO.

I laugh a kind of Peter Lorre tinged laugh, feeling a bit 'crazy' for a few seconds.It's not my habit to look at license tabs, but the precise timing is impeccable and that's what I notice first. But 314 is the first three numerals in pi and I have had years of special unique experiences with that irrational number!

This is not an isolated kind of event in my life, I remember that its only one on a long string of such events! How to interpret this is no problem now, but that's because I'm familiar with how meaning and context emerge, as well as the precise timing, What does it mean to anyone other than me? Does it mean anything to anyone at all? Can I trust my interpretation? Will my interpretation be validated by scientific methods? Is this really an event that identifies me, where I am? Does it 'echo' back what I've just looked at? To me, it is an echo. This is not an unusual kind of event, it IS always a surprise though.

Its not a big book but its definitely written by a gifted author that has had some experiences of his own. I didn't give it 5 stars because the bibliography does not include many authors that had written before Jung or Freud about the Hermetic Art of interpretation. Ethan Allen Hitchcock (Remarks upon Alchemy and the Alchemists) and other authors whose ideas about symbolic interpretation were written before Jung lived would have been illuminating to this author, in my opinion. I had also read much of Swedenborg's writings to whom Jung must owe more than he recognized in his time.

About the Author
David S. Caudill, J.D., Ph.D. is the Arthur M. Goldberg Family Chair in Law at Villanova University School of Law where he teaches scientific evidence, property, and legal ethics. He is also a senior fellow at the University of Melbourne, where he teaches expert evidence and entertainment law. Professor Caudill is the author of over 100 articles, essays, book chapters, and book reviews, and the author of five books, including No Magic Wand: The Idealization of Science in Law (2006) and Lacan and the Subject of Law: Towards a Psychoanalytic Critical Legal Theory (1997). He is a frequent speaker at conferences on the law of evidence, legal ethics, law and literature, and science studies.

Rather than a purely political strategy of the kind modelled by rational choice theorists, the study argues that the Court's achievement is attributable to a series of adjudicative strategies in different areas of law. In combination, these strategies allowed the Court to satisfy institutional norms of public reason-giving while at the same time avoiding political attack.

He is a former Secretary-General of the International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL) and the Founding Director of the South African Institute for Advanced Constitutional, Public, Human Rights and International Law (SAIFAC).

Pedantic. Over-Theorized. Under-Researched.

When law professors grow tired of law they sometimes embrace political science, economics, sociology, or literary theory as tools for analyzing what "really" happens in courts. Books like "The Politics of Principle" are the result. It is not a book about South African constitutional law or a history of the epochal Chaskalson years (1995-2005) of the South African Constitutional Court. Instead, it uses a handful of judicial opinions as grist for a belabored analysis of the court in terms of judicial politics theory. Though not badly written, the book is a tour de force of armchair social science: if the author interviewed even one justice who served on the court, or one lawyer who practiced before it, or one ANC official who dealt with judicial matters, there's no sign of it in the footnotes. Instead, there is much speculation about "judging strategies" supposedly crafted to enhance the court's independence. There are also plenty of citations to law review articles and social science literature. Gag. Readers interested in the Constitutional Court should ignore "The Politics of Principle" and turn instead to Albie Sachs' "The Strange Alchemy of Life and Law."

This is a brilliant and serious scholarly study of Qing foreign policy and how it played a very 'great game' in the geopolitics of its time. Moving from what Mosca dubs a "frontier policy" of dealing with each border area on-site according to regional pressures and in the local idiom, the Qing gradually developed a synoptic "foreign policy," seeing all its territories as part of a concerted grand strategy. The case study is India and the potential threat posed by the British empire. Mosca's scholarship is impressive--familiarity with half a dozen languages was necessary to follow some of the place names, from Sanskrit to Manchu, to say nothing of his ability to translate the writings of some of the key actors so you can see history through their own perspective.

There are all sorts of fun threads in this book: how does knowledge get created and lost, how is grand strategy formulated, what does imperialism look like through Asian eyes, or with a Chinese/Manchu face?

Despite being marketed as serious scholarship, this would be a brilliant book for anyone interested in China in the world, or someone looking for a perspective on China in international relations.

About the Author
Anne Lise Kjær is Associate Professor at the Centre for European Constitutionalization, Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen and Director of the international research network Reline for interdisciplinary studies in Language and Law. More recent and current research concerns cross-disciplinary studies of legal integration in Europe and combines theories of language, discourse, culture and law. Silvia Adamo is Assistant Professor at the Centre for Studies in Legal Culture, Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen. Her research interests and publications revolve around migration law and citizenship law, including language requirements for migrants applying for citizenship, European Union law and the interaction between law and political philosophy on multiculturalism.
