Beautifully Haunting Ending

This was quite a lengthy read, but I have to say it was also worth it. I love the characters, how well-developed they are. Venna, our protagonist, showed the most character traits throughout the novel as she went through the five stages of grief after being tortured and abducted by her crazed stalker, Merrick.

The ending of the story was beautifully haunting, wrapping it up in a way that both showed Venna’s strengths as well as giving the piece a circular feeling that showed just how far each character had come. It almost played out like a movie, keeping me right on the edge of my seat.

I loved the story idea, and I really wanted to rate this work higher, but I felt that there were a lot of unnecessary conversations and scenes. The pace was really, really slow and the dreams Venna had were repetitive, and at some points in the story, it was hard to tell what were dreams, and what was real. I found myself skimming through a majority of the book without it even affecting the plot.

Even so, I would recommend the book because the plot really is compelling, even if it does take it a while to get to the point.

Great Story

As a person who enjoys a good horror/thriller, whether it be reading or watching, I enjoyed Evol immensely. Although a bit scary at times, it was in a good way. The hard part was going to bed after reading the book. The story seemed so real. I wasn't sure if it's because it was or because I watch so many of those Discovery ID shows that I thought it was real.

Jess Wygle managed to write a story that seemed so real it was frightening. The story was well written and there was a lot of attention given to the details in the story. I believe that made it so easy to read and so enjoyable.

Whether you like thrillers or not, you will definitely enjoy Evol

A great edge of your seat thriller!

If you are looking for a "keep you on the edge of your seat" kind of book you will love this one. It starts off fast in the suspense/thriller area with Venna being kidnapped from her parents home. Every time you think Venna has gotten away her "kidnapper" is right behind her. Jess builds a great line of characters, character that are very easy to like or in Merrick's case dislike. I like the authors flow and keeping her readers wanting to know more and see what will happen next.

The history of a non-event

History has a way of overlooking or forgetting events. Oh yes, the event is real. People talked about it for years afterward. At the time, the papers reported it. Things happened because of it. However, history seems to have forgotten all about it. It is a non-event. At best, non-events are footnotes or a couple of lines in a detailed history. Non-events are always important to the local historical society. They have a few die-hard fans willing to talk about how the non-event should not be a non-event. Having said that, non-events can teach us a lot about the times, attitudes and help frame the real events in history.

The Battle of Carthage on July 1861 is one of the Civil War's non-events. I discovered Carthage years ago and have a soft spot for it ever since. Carthage is a window into 1861 Missouri. This is a state full of ethnic divisions and political infighting. People are capable of incredible bravery and just plain stupidity. Missouri's 1861 war is the story of armed semi-trained mobs stumbling into each other and into battles. While not fought between "official" armies, Carthage is the first battle of the war. The bravery and fighting abilities of the men on both sides stand in stark contrast to the political "generals" that lead them. Personnel evaluations Carthage colors the Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge campaigns helping to determine who was/was not reliable. A major advantage of small battles is our ability to easily look at the details and personalities. We can understand why their are so many questions about big battles exploring questions caused by small ones.

Kenneth E. Burchett takes the time to explore the details and questions in an intelligent and readable way. We have enough general politics and prior events to understand the situation and the events that put the two armies on the field. The real strength is the coverage of the town and personalities. This investment pays dividends, as the reader understands the tensions and actions of both sides. The author shows that in addition to the two armies, the locals are divided and dividing into factions. This division will have real consequences in the years to come. The author takes the time to tell us what "Civil War" came to mean for the town of Carthage and the people living there. The battle history is well written, detailed and readable. Multiple questions are covered with the possible answers and the "Best Choice" identified. The tactical problems facing sides, their solutions and how this changes the battle are understandable. The author has an easy to read style that keeps your attention. The result is a detailed informative look at this small battle.

The book has a number of woodcuts and photographs but lacks maps. The two included are contemporary maps and little use to placing armies or understanding the course of battle. That is my only real problem with this book. The book is fully footnoted, indexed and has a good bibliography.

Good Work on a Small Battle

I am always glad to see new works appearing that discuss the war in the Trans-Mississippi Theatre. Burchett's book on the battle of Carthage, Missouri is a thorough, balanced, and fairly well written study. The book is focused on the battle itself and does not stray from that focus. The narrative is not difficult to follow, except in a few instances the authors does drag out his discussion on certain aspects of the battle. I only noticed a hand full of typos. As has been noted by other reviewers, the lack of maps in this book is the most serious drawback to it. I do not understand why the author did include any in his book. This can make it difficult to follow the marches of the various forces as well as their movements during the battle itself. I found myself using the maps in the book by Hinze and Farnham on the battle of Carthage. The lack of maps notwithstanding, this is a good study of this small and early battle.

'Carthage, a series of six engagements fought in southwestern Missouri over ten hours on July 5, 1861, two weeks before Bull Run, saw two bands of ill-trained, ill-armed, albeit enthusiastic volunteers (some 4,000 secessionists and 1,000 Unionists) decide that Missouri would be a divided state in the Civil War. Prof. Burchett devotes nearly half the book to an almost day-by-day discussion of the opening weeks of the war in Missouri, giving us a look at how individuals and events helped propel the citizens of a deeply divided state to meet in this small action that is today but little known. Most of the remainder of Burchett's text covers the battle in considerable detail, with amateur soldiers fighting each other in often great confusion, until the Unionists gave way. He then discusses the results of the battle and several controversies connected with it, which includes matters like "who won" and "what were the casualties," both at the time fought over in print almost as intensely as the battle itself. This is readable treatment of a small, obscure, but very unusual and interesting event in the Civil War.'

About the Author
Rodney Kennedy is a Professor in the Research School of Engineering and the Head of the Applied Signal Processing research group at the Australian National University. He has won a number of prizes in engineering and mathematics, including UNSW University and ATERB Medals. He has supervised more than 40 PhD students and co-authored approximately 300 research papers. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Parastoo Sadeghi is a Fellow in the Research School of Engineering at the Australian National University. She has published around 70 refereed journal and conference papers and received two IEEE Region 10 paper awards. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

About the Author
Brian Crane's daily comic strip Pickles debuted in syndication in 1990. Soon after, Crane "retired" as an art director for an advertising agency in Reno, Nev., to devote his full attention to the strip. In 1995, Pickles was nominated for Best Comic Strip of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society. In 2002, it captured the Society's award for Best Comic Strip. Brian lives near Reno with his wife, Diana. He's the proud father of seven and grandfather of one.

Laughing my head off

Brian Crane is without a doubt one of the funniest cartoonists out there today. His book "Still Pickled After All These Years: A Pickles Book" is just hilarious. You will find yourself laughing out loud while reading this book. It is amazing how easy it is to see real people...i.e., parents/grandparents in his cartoon strips. I highly recommend this book.

I was excited to see Pickles offered as an kindle item. I'd requested it a while back. After a quick easy download I opened it up and realized how small it seemed. I'm using an iPad mini and in two page view it's major eye strain for me, single page view is much better and should be fine on a full sized tablet, but it's nowhere near as good as "guided view" which I am used to with some other comics.
I was also disappointed to see that the Sunday comics were not in color.
It's great to have Pickles so handy but I hope the formatting improves.

Disappointing on the Topic of Vivaldi's Invisible Orchestra

This book is lovely to look at: beautifully illustrated with lovely pastel drawings and soft outlines. It will make a nice, girl-empowering read for young creatives. Unfortunately, the story does not live up to the title. It tells of a child named Candida, a fictional music scribe who writes poetry in the margins of Vivaldi's music, poetry that is to become the four anonymous sonnets on which "The Four Seasons" are based. A lovely story of one girl's efforts, perhaps, but the book fails to delve much into the title topic, that of Vivaldi's orphan orchestra, hidden away from audiences.

Very little is known about the writing of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, but for music lovers looking to introduce a child to Vivaldi, Anna Harwell Celenza's Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which comes with a CD of the music, might be a better choice.

A musical mystery and an inspired tale

My seven-year-old daughter plays the piano and we've (husband and I) been introducing her to some of the famous composers. I've always loved Baroque composer Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, and when I saw this picture book, I thought it would be a great way to introduce her to the composer, besides listening to his music.

Not only is this a delightful tale but also a musical mystery which for the purpose of the story has been changed a little. There were four sonnets on the four seasons published together with Vivaldi's music in 1725. Till today, the identity of the author of those poems remains a mystery. Author-illustrator Stephen Costanza creates a fictional character, Candida, as the young authoress of the poems. Until I read this book, I was not aware that Vivaldi composed many of his pieces for the young orphans in Venice, specifically those residing at the Ospedale della Pieta, an all-girl orphanage. The girls who performed in Vivaldi's orchestra, hidden behind the curtains were known as Vivaldi's Invisible Orchestra. What is less clear is why these young musicians had to be concealed behind curtains, their identities never revealed, and only their beautiful music heard. Perhaps because of their tender age?

Well, Candida may be a fictitious character created by Mr. Costanza, but she is certainly a credible symbol of the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of these orphan girls with dreams of their own and a desire to have their voices heard.

Each word is well-chosen and together with the accompanying illustrations which are beautiful and vivid, the story of these 'invisible children' comes alive, and both my daughter and I were incredibly touched. My daughter has been inspired by this tale and is now keen to explore poems and write poetry! A recommended read!

There should be more "historical novels" for children! Stephen Costanza, my favorite illustrator for children's books, has created another of his top-notch stories about famous composers. The drawings are exciting, colorful, and beautifully executed. It's an excellent way to introduce children to the life and music of Vivaldi.
