In essays focused on Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and the wider Anglophone Caribbean, the contributors explore the fields of power within which Caribbean religions have been produced, modified, appropriated, and policed. The "other powers" of the book's title have helped to shape, or attempted to curtail, Caribbean religions and healing practices. These powers include those of capital and colonialism; of states that criminalize some practices and legitimize others; of occupying armies that rewrite constitutions and reorient economies; of writers, filmmakers, and scholars who represent Caribbean practices both to those with little knowledge of the region and to those who live there; and, not least, of the millions of people in the Caribbean whose relationships with one another, as well as with capital and the state, have long been mediated and experienced through religious formations and discourses.

Diana Paton is a Reader in Caribbean history at Newcastle University. She is the author of No Bond but the Law: Punishment, Race, and Gender in Jamaican State Formation, 1780–1870 and editor of A Narrative of Events, since the First of August, 1834, by James Williams, an Apprenticed Labourer in Jamaica and, with Pamela Scully, Gender and Slave Emancipation in the Atlantic World, all also published by Duke University Press.

Maarit Forde is a Lecturer in the Department of Liberal Arts at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.

Using these quantitative measures, he provides consistent definitions of "dominance" and "hegemony" that should become commonly used and contribute to more precise discourse in history and political science. These tools uncover the deeper issues behind the current problems of the United States.

About the Author
Mohamed A.M. Ismail is a Vice-President of the Egyptian State Council (Conseil d'Etat), Judge at the Court of Appeal (Contracts Circuit), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), Visiting Professor and PhD examiner in the Egyptian Universities in International State Contracts and Arbitration, particularly on infrastructure projects, Lecturer at the Cairo Regional Centre of the International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA) and Arbitrator in the International Construction Contracts disputes particularly International Public Works Agreements. Dr Ismail was formerly a Senior Legal Advisor of HE the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and represented the Egyptian Government in the state international business transactions in the Oil and Gas industry, especially in the UK with distinguished law firms such as Shearman Sterling the international counsel to the Egyptian government. He was a Senior Legal Advisor of HE the Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry and formerly a Senior Legal Advisor of the Investment Sector in Egypt and represented the Egyptian government at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Geneva, for the Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) negotiations when developing states were involved. Dr Ismail is the recipient of the prestigious State Prize for Academic Legal Research - from the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt - 2011/2012.

About the Author
 Don Asmussen was born in Rhode Island, a state so small that he didn't fit. So began a long journey through newspapers that included the Portland Press Herald, Detroit News, and San Diego Tribune. In 1997, he landed at the San Francisco Chronicle to write The San Francisco Comic Strip, a cartoon that trashed everyone but Don himself (he's sensitive to self-criticism). He also did a three-year stint as a Time magazine cartoonist. In 2003, he merged his cartooning craft with his bent for politics to create, Bad Reporter.

Brilliant parody of the presidential election process

Don Asmussen has a great knack for highlighting the absurdities in politics and current events. Being a fan of his Bad Reporter comic, I had to check this out, and I was not disappointed. The book is basically an account - fictional, obviously - of a presidential race between two pet candidates. There's the incumbent, a German Shepherd named Spot. He's been running an increasingly unpopular "War on squirels" (they hate our freedom). The Cat Party challenger is Mittens, described as "moody, aloof, and always hard to find (on issues)." There's a rich layer of detail put into this book, and if you follow politics (or happen to be a pet owner) you'll find this rewarding and very funny read. My one complaint is that it's too short, but regardless this book is definitely worth checking out.

I'm Keen on This!

If you like to laugh, and like your laughs in book form, you really could not do better than Asmussen's exquisitely uproarious book. And for all those people who are off put but what happens in litter boxes and don't really like what cats are all about, then that's all the more reason to buy this book.

I once met Asmussen at a coffee shop in the Marina. He was quite handsome and smelled of lavender. Are you one of those people who always think that cartoonists are all about big egos, flashy wardrobes and necklaces and driving their Bentleys up on the curb like I used to be? Because Asmussen couldn't have been nicer and was cool with me fawning all over him. Thanks Don, I'll never forget that day or this book!

Healing History Opens a Vista to Peace

As a scholar and activist in the field of Jewish-Muslim peace work, most recently as author of Shalom/Salaam: A Story of a Mystical Fraternity, I have followed the work and thought of Joseph Montville, editor of this collection, for many years. Montville has set the standard for exploring the underlying psychological pathologies of ethnic and religious conflict situations, as well as utilizing recovered, positive histories between contemporary political enemies to ameliorate these conflicts.

This most recent work, History as Prelude: Muslims and Jews in the Medieval Mediterranean, bringing together more than a half-dozen of the pre-eminent scholars examining historical Jewish-Muslim affinities, is shocking due to its clear assessment of a lost era of positive Jewish-Muslim relations, which took place around the Mediterranean for nearly half a millennium during Medieval times. Shocking not for its violence, but its sober, soothing and surprising examination of a relationship that we all feel we know so well from reading newspaper accounts and seeing television reportage of a seemingly unremitting hatred between Jews and Muslims.

This book resoundingly proves the fallacy of that belief.

In bringing these voices together around this shared, counter-narrative theme, Montville introduces us to the breadth of positive relations between the Abrahamic cousins, from shared spiritual and religious sources, to the mundane life of merchants, doctors and even poets.

From the Author
This book is about basic statistical methods useful for biosurveillance. The focus on basic methods has a two-fold motivation. First, there is a need for a text that starts from the fundamentals, both of public health surveillance and statistics, and weaves them together into a foundation for biosurveillance.

Second, while there is a large and growing literature about biosurveillance that includes the application of some very complicated and sophisticated statistical methods, it has been my experience that more complicated methods and models do not always result in better performance. And, even when they do, there is often an inherent trade-off made in terms of transparency and interpretability.

I hope this book contributes to the effective design and implementation of biosurveillance systems. Given the increasingly dangerous
threats that face mankind, some of natural origin and some not, and all magnified by our increasingly interconnected world, biosurveillance systems are truly a first line of defense.

Zimmerman shows how the people of Togo, rather than serving as a blank slate for American and German ideologies, helped shape their region's place in the global South. He looks at the forms of resistance pioneered by African American freedpeople, Polish migrant laborers, African cotton cultivators, and other groups exploited by, but never passive victims of, the growing colonial political economy. Zimmerman reconstructs the social science of the global South formulated by such thinkers as Max Weber and W.E.B. Du Bois, and reveals how their theories continue to define contemporary race, class, and culture.

Tracking the intertwined histories of Europe, Africa, and the Americas at the turn of the century, Alabama in Africa shows how the politics and economics of the segregated American South significantly reshaped other areas of the world.

Booker T. Washington and Africa

OK; as the great granddaughter of BTW I thought I knew everything about the man. When I read Alabama to Africa I learned that BTW sent an expedition to West Africa to teach them how to cultivate cotton after the Civil War destroyed the cotton fields and the European economy suffered when America could no longer supply there cotton needs. I also learned that BTW saved Liberia from being colonized when threatened by the British and the Portuguese because they couldn't pay back their loans. BTW called on his friend Pres. Roosevelt to intervene. This is the same President that had invited BTW to dinner at the White House. If you are a student of history you will love this story. You will be amazed at what you learn about BTW. Again, Amazon.com delivered just like they promised. Quality, cost and service...gotta love Amazon!

I enjoyed reading this little book about Booker T. Washington and his journey from Alabama into other countries to include Africa.

Alabama, Africa? How about Germany

The book has a lot of detail but mostly about social impacts of New South thinking. Very little about Togo and what was said must have been said three times. This most probably would have been a good booklet or an essay.
