About the Author
Lynn Johnston was born in Collingwood, Ontario, and grew up in British Columbia. Today, she lives in Corbeil, Ontario. Johnston is the first woman to receive a Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year from the National Cartoonists Society in 1986. She has also received the Order of Canada and claims a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.

lhj distills all the great farley episodes into one volume from his early galumphing self thru his heroic death. if you ever loved a dog, pick up this book -- you will laugh and cry, and sometimes do both together.

Remembering an old friend...

I am 33 years old and have read FBOFW since day one. When Farley joined the family, I was afraid that they wouldn't keep him. But every day he became more a part of the family than the day before. The days that featured Farley were the best. The day they couldn't revive him after he saved April was horrible. I am a grown man with a family of my own and I cried over the loss of this fictional dog. Even looking back now, I get teary eyed. I was so thankful when Lynn put this book out. If you only buy one FBOFW book, make it this one. You will still be able to watch the family grow, and you will become very fond of this very important part of the Patterson family. Farley was indeed a special friend and this book remembers him well.

Farley gone but not forgotten.

Lynn Johnston and her cartoon For Better or Worse is not really well known in Australia, so it was with a degree of apprehension that I decided to buy this book to see what her cartoons were like.
One of the best book purchases I've made as I soon went on to buy as many of her books as I can. Quite simply she has great drawing skills as unlike many other cartoonists objects she draws such as houses, cars, kitchens, people etc. look realistic.
Unlike other cartoons people and animals also 'age' in her cartoon strips. So you'll see the life of Farley from a young pup to his ultimate demise. Along the way you'll see not only Farley grow and change but also the Patterson family.
Her humour is often subtle so it might be suited to those who get a quiet chuckle out of the ordinary everyday things in life that happen. If you are after something along the lines of Gary Larson then this one might not be for you.
I would highly recommend this as a great selection for anyone wanting to see what Lynn Johnstons cartoons are like or to anyone who has ever loved and lost a loyal freind. You might find that Farley's antics were quite similar in some respects to those of your own dog.

Understanding why Neoliberalism is so triumphant today

Neoliberalism, the belief that it is safer to repose faith in markets than on a State is the operating philosophy in many countries today. What led to this triumph? Michael Hunt's book provides many of the answers.
He points first to the influence of ideas. Hayek's, "The Road to Serfdom" for instance which presented the State as a stop on the road to totalitarianism, Milton Friedman's "Capitalism and Freedom", which presents markets as not only efficient but also the only guarantor of freedom, to name just two.
He also points to the untiring proselytism of think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation and the failure of Keynsian, state-led initiatives to solve the stagflation of the '70's and most of all the collapse of the Soviet System in the late '90's which demolished faith in the centralized planned economy model.
The Western liberal democratic model has appeared to have triumphed to the point that Francis Fukuyama called it " the end of history", the final form of human government.
The American elite, Hunt says, now have substituted "globalization" as their over-riding mantra, leaving behind the Cold War mantra.
The power of Hunt's analysis is that he views all these movements as a continuation of of an efforts by the a small group of American thinkers and statesman to seek and achieve global dominance.He traces such efforts back to its nineteenth century foundations, the "grand projects" (President McKinley's aggressive pursuit of the possessions of a declining Spanish Empire in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Philippines) onto the enormous growth of the technology -based American economy in the inter-war period, learning to deal with the complicated situation that arose with the retreat from colonialism of the European powers in the 1941-68 period.
The ends the book with questions that are currently being raised about the neo-liberal American hegemony: by the Europeans, the Japanese , the East Asians and the Chinese ,all of who remain strongly committed to the interventionist state, by a resurgent Russia, by the rise of fundamentalism in the Middle East....history has not really ended.

The book utilizes a comparative approach to highlight the merits and obstacles created by the growing diversity in the constitutional rules and patterns of the new Member States. It also contains a section that places the CEE constitutionalizing map in a broader comparative European and global context, establishing links with similar transitional regimes in the continent and elsewhere.

Enlightening But In Need of Better Editing

Picked up some interesting factoids like his middle initial standing for nothing, him being a prolific reader and raising to the rank of Colonel in the Army. Sort of sad to think he left the Presidency essentially bankrupt on a monthly army pension of barely $100. Biggest gripe I had was poor editing including passages like:

1) Harry and many others said that would have died if the war had continued. (insert 'many more' between that and would) location 207
2) He also wanted to improve public welfare benefits, unemployment help social security. (Any suggestions?) location 227
3) Harry got passed this by signing a statement saying it was a national emergency ('past' not passed) location 254

Informative, yes, but lacking as to editing which distracted some from the book.

Truman, a man of his time

I chose this rating because if the complete story of Truman from childhood to older adult. The information regarding his rise to the presidency are critical to understanding the man. He is one of my favorite presidents and to hear he left the presidency poor was an interesting concept. Things we take for granted today such as a presidential retirement plan get answered by reading of Truman, his decisions and how he was a man of his time.

I enjoyed the book, it was well written and informative. However, one of the reasons for my purchase of
the book was the advertising that said it was "interactive." There were no videos or sound bites.
It was very disappointing in that way.
The book itself was very good.

A Complete Life

If you have read the first 2 parts of the trilogy, then surely you will want to see how Kristen's life story turns out. Through Undset's marvelous characterizations you will experience a huge range of human emotions: the worries of parents about their children (especially of course from the mother's perspective), the joy of seeing the future in and through your children,the melancholy waning of marital love (and its reawakening), the fragility of life in medieval times, the ecstasy of deep religious faith, the hysteria when the unknown approaches. Undset examines through Kristin the constants of human life with simplicity, but also with a realization that the mystery of existence remains mysterious. A reviewer of an earlier volume said he preferred the 1920's translation in a pseudo-Walter Scott style, claiming it shows more "poetry" than Tiina Nunnally's. "De gustibus non est disputandum": each to his own taste. I suggest that you take a look at both translations before you buy and see which one you might prefer. (I will still call the earlier translation dreadful.) I hope that Tiina Nunnally will eventually translate all of Undset's works.

Bringing It All Together

THE CROSS is the final shattering novel in Sigrid Undset's KRISTAN LAVRANSDATTER trilogy. In it, Kristin reaps both the rewards and sorrows of the choices she sowed in the first two volumes.
In the first novel, Kristin's passion for Erlend Nikulausson led her to break her betrothal to Simon Andresson. In the second volume, Kristin sought to atone for her sin (she was already pregnant when she celebrated her wedding with Erlend), but had to struggle to forgive Erlend for leading her astray. In THE CROSS, the consequences of Kristin's choices all come to a head. The first section of the novel focuses on Simon, who has been a faithful friend to Kristin and Erlend, even as he continued to harbor feelings for Kristin. In the mid-section of the novel, Kristin and Erlend strive to find peace with one another. While their passion for one another never died, they were never fully able to overcome the mismatch in their marriage. And in the final section, we follow Kristin as she seeks acceptance from her seven sons, and most importantly from God.
For while KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER seems to be a novel about love, friendship, and marriage, its deepest message is about the struggle of deeply-flawed humans to reconcile themselves with God. The trilogy is set in medieval Norway and all of the characters order their lives (as best they can) around the Christian moral order. Even as they knowingly fail, the Faith is a part of the very air they breathe.
The miracle of Sigrid Undset's trilogy is the clarity of her perception into the human condition. All of these characters live and breathe, and (more startling) we see clearly how they impact each other through the tangled webs of their lives. But Undset's literary talent is embedded in a sharp religious vision, which points to God's relationship with us as sinners. Undset never denies the good in Kristin's passion for Erlend. Nor does she hide the devastating consequences their passion had on each other and on all of the lives they touched. Often, to sin is not to choose that which is evil, but rather to choose a lesser good. Yet as the saying goes, God can write straight with crooked lines, and at the end of this extraordinary trilogy, Kristin comes to see how God has been with her through all of the light *and* through all of the dark. We walk away from the novel enthralled by the grandeur of the story we live out in this fallen world, and the enormous love God has for us.
Rereading Sigrid Undset's classic trilogy has been one of my most rewarding projects this summer.

Heart rending.

I have told you in my reviews of the 2 earlier books that you become Kristin. Well, in this book you wish you were her so you could recover from her mistakes and make life right again. How tragic Erlend's ending, how sad Kristin's. I ache to this day for her. Was life really like that in those days. We will never know. But feelings and emotions seem to be timeless and I can only imagine that somewhere in sometime in someone's life they experienced all that Kristin did and I ache for them too. These books will be a part of me forever and I can not recommend them to highly to you.

Schools in Venezuela promote pragmatic goals as well as 'Bolivarian values' having diverse roots in the country’s history and both Marxist and Enlightenment thought. About the Author
Manuel Anselmi is an assistant professor of political sociology at the University of Perugia and professor of political science at the University of Viterbo (Italy). He graduated in philosophy at the University of Rome "La Sapienza," PhD in Social Science and Science of Education at University of Cassino. He is a columnist at the magazine of the Italian think tank Institute for International Affairs and he collaborates with the daily Ilfattoquotidiano.
