E Albonico gioca, per così dire, un doppio ruolo: da un lato è lo scrittore che sa dosare sapientemente il ritmo dell’interloquire erodoteo, dall’altro è lui stesso lettore, che si lascia sedurre da quel gusto per la narrazione tipicamente orientale, con la curiosità e lo stupore, a volte addirittura il compiacimento per il particolare raro, esotico, persino strampalato, che viene comunque riportato, pur con una sorta di sospensione del giudizio.

Some called it the splendor of the East; others the whore of Asia. A melting pot of different nations fused together by wars and business opportunities—that was Shanghai of the 1920s.

The Great Powers are happily exploiting China for its cheap labor and reaping the rewards of its opium market, but the precarious balance of foreign interests is upset by the perennial troublemakers—the Russians. A flotilla of ships illegally enters Shanghai, carrying the last detachment of the defeated White Army.

Among the refugees is Klim Rogov, a journalist whose life and marriage were destroyed by the Russian revolution. Now his only possession is his quick wits and worldly acumen. To survive the lawless jungle called Shanghai, he employs many guises, working as a reporter in a British run newspaper, rubbing shoulders with international gangsters as well as fighting the sinister communist agents. But whatever he comes up against, he never gives up hope of winning back his beloved wife Nina.

Authentic Voice

The author is to be commended on her scholarship and research, in achieving not only a beautifully expressed story of Russian loss and dislocation, but also an authentic voice. I was born in Shanghai of Russian parents displaced by the Russian revolution and civil war. Reading "White Shanghai" has been like listening to my parents talk. Elvira Baryakina's writing is rich, elegant and witty. I look forward to reading her other books.

A Must Read

I received this book from my wife as a Christmas present and I have just finished reading it. After the first chapter I could not put it down. We all know of the roaring 20s of the Western world but a roaring 20s in China? The book takes you at pace through the Chinese roaring 20s highlighted by Russian post revolution refugees set against British business and political interests. It is a story of love and betrayal interwoven as a moral dilemma against the history of a little known era of Chinese culture.
For those interested in the history of the 20th Century this is a definite must read.

Story Transports Reader to 1920s Shanghai

I was excited to receive this novel since it is set in Shanghai in the 1920s, a chaotic period in the history of that city and China as a whole. In setting and depiction of the political corruption, public unrest, and rampant racism, the book didn't disappoint. It's a confusing time and I still don't have it clear in my mind but I know a lot more than I did before I read this book. I admire the author's ability to sort it all out.

Whites mostly lived in the white settlement which was forbidden to Chinese unless they were employed by a white family. In this story, the main characters are White Russians who fled the Bolshevik revolution via Vladivostok on the remaining ships of the tsar's navy. From there they sailed south, stopping at ports in hopes of finding help and shelter but no one wanted them. As they ran out of supplies and people were dying on the ships, they came to Shanghai and stopped. There was no place to go. At that point many of the more adventurous refugees found a way into the city where they fed and clothed themselves through means both legal and illegal.

I had one huge problem with this novel. I really didn't find any characters that I liked or even cared much what happened to them. The protagonist, Klim Rogov, a journalist is too passive, his estranged wife, Nina, too aggressive and self-centered, and the others just plain unlikable. You must keep in mind that these people are in an impossible situation and I understand that. The Russians are looked down upon and definitely unwanted in Shanghai. Just making enough money for a little food and maybe a room to sleep in requires a lot of luck and courage. Nina makes a success of her businesses because she cares only about herself and doesn't mind trampling on others to get what she wants.

This book was written by a Russian woman who lives in New York, but she wrote it in Russian. It was then translated by a team of two people and they did a marvelous job of it. It still has a Russian flavor to it but the English is impeccable. It was published in London. As I think about it, that's almost as confusing as the situation in Shanghai.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes historical novels firmly set in the period and place, and who don't mind a long novel of more than 500 pages. The novel carries the reader along without boring passages and tells a good story.

Over the last several years, Carol Smallwood has provided an invaluable service to librarians, organizing the most practical books in the field of librarianship. Two tenets of effective librarians include an insatiable curiosity and a desire for perpetual learning. Continuing Education for Librarians: Essays on Career Improvement Through Classes, Workshops, Conferences and More is a wonderfully assembled guide for librarians by librarians who desire to develop practical skills and expand their knowledge base for personal and professional fulfillment, but ultimately, for the sake of serving library patrons. Life isn't a cabaret, it's a circus

I'm a big fan of Big Top and was very excited to see the first volume of collected strips - especially since I had never seen the first few months and missed some of the origins of the story and character (not that you really need it, but I enjoy starting from the beginning).

Anyway, if you are a fan of strips like Get Fuzzy or Pearls Before Swine I think you'll enjoy the humor here. Great characters abound. From the main character Pete (an 11 year old boy who lives at the circus) to others like Dusty Poodle (a self-made teen idol), Wink Bear (who has a huge crush on Katie Couric), and Kingston Lion (who always has great dating advice for Pete like "bring a dead antelope") this is a comic strip that is often laugh-out-loud funny. On top of that the illustration is very well done, which just adds to the overall enjoyment of the strip.

If you aren't reading Big Top, you are missing out on valuable laughs!

The comic storytelling artistry of cartoonist Rob Harrel as showcased in his 'Big Top' syndicated strip, will serve to introduce newcomers to the quality of his work and enable previous fans to again appreciate the fun cartoon story of a pre-teen circus boy's coming of age. The black and white strips comprising Big Top are presented in chronological order for clarity of adventure progression and are delightful, whimsical stories.

this is a DELIGHTFUL strip. if it isn't in your paper, read it online at [...] the best thing about the book is that not only do you get the beginnings of one of the best new strips around, not only do you get to meet wink (who used to be cool), and dusty (who used to have different name), but you also get outtakes. that's right, at the end of this book are the first comic strip outtakes i've ever seen. definitely worth your money.

This extraordinary debut is an account of Elliot's two visits to Afghanistan. The first occurred when he joined the mujaheddin circa 1979 and was smuggled into Soviet-occupied Afghanistan; the second happened nearly ten years later, when he returned to the still war-torn land. The skirmishes that Elliot painstakingly describes here took place between the Taliban and the government of Gen. Ahmad Shah Massoud in Kabul. Today, the Taliban are in power, but Elliot's sympathies clearly lie with Massoud. Although he thought long and hard before abandoning his plan to travel to Hazara territory, where "not a chicken could cross that pass without being fired on," Elliot traveled widely in the hinterland, visiting Faizabad in the north and Herat in the west. The result is some of the finest travel writing in recent years. With its luminous descriptions of the people, the landscape (even when pockmarked by landmines), and Sufism, this book has all the hallmarks of a classic, and it puts Elliot in the same league as Robert Byron and Bruce Chatwin. Like Newby, Murphy, Asher, Thesiger? Then here's your man!

An extraordinary book that transcends the bounds of travelogue and gives us deep and personal insight into one of the most the world's most inaccessible regions. Elliot's Afghan friends and travel companions convey, in the midst of the grief and difficulty of war, an enviable warmth and humor that has made the country a favorite of travelers for decades before the Soviet invasion. There are many hair raising trips in overloaded trucks over vertiginous mountain passes, lavish descriptions of ruins seldom seen by westerners, and intriguing historical facts from this crossroads of peoples for the traveler, adventurer and historian. Elliot writes from the heart and out of love for the Afghan people and land and this shines through on every page more than any such book I've read since Thesiger's Arabian Sands (and upon inspection, even Thesiger's motives begin to seem cloudy compared with Elliott's affection and respect for his subjects). You will put this book down with a profound respect for the Afghan people and immense desire to visit this land... I cannot recommend this book highly enough - if you read it you will soon find yourself searching through old travel guides and looking for a way to travel the roads of Afghanistan first hand.

Afghanistan's Conscience in the West

Of the currently posted reviews, it is interesting that they either rate this book at the top or at the bottom of the rating scale. This is a sign that the book elicits much more comment on the reviewer's state of mind than on the book itself. My review will be no different.
While I second those who extoll the book's poetry and its vivid portrayal of the Afghan land and culture, to me the real value of the book lies in its deepest appeal to the conscience (or lack of conscience) in the reader. Mr. Elliot's report is unique in that it covers two or three visits that he undertook that span the time during and after the Soviet war, just prior to Taleban occupation of Kabul and the roughly 90% of Afghanistan that it occupies today.
During this time, under extremely difficult circumstances, Mr. Elliot had access to people and places that would shortly be cut off and, in many cases, destroyed during the ensuing Taleban onslaught. The result, both of the circumstances and Mr. Elliot's reporting on them, is a tale filled with longing--a longing for some of what is, much of what was and has been lost, and what may never be recovered, an innocence and deeply human sympathy ravaged by the cynicism of the world.
Afghanistan was never an easy place to live, but it was long a place where humanity reigned supreme in the daily lives of common people. Some have called it the height of civilization, low-tech though it was. It had long been the seat of a kind of basic (and advanced) hospitality that has been all but lost, though much imitated, in much of the rest of the world. Elliot's deep love and intimate knowledge of these people and the remaining remnants of their culture informs every page of his vivid account.
In the end, he leaves those of us with the conscience to respond with a deep sense of loss, yet with a vivid picture of hope for the future of our common human destiny. Yes, he makes us want to visit what was once Afghanistan, the Land of the Free. But even more, he makes us accutely aware of the Jewel that has been lost and that we must all find again to restore the vital center of our own particular human culture where we happen to live, among the common people of our daily lives.

Outsiders Inside Look at Afghanistan

Jason Elliot immerses himself into Afghanistan twice, once in 1979 with the Mujahadeen, and once again in 1989 to see a land still in the throes of war. Perhaps he will still get a chance to revisit the country in 2009, to get a perspective of the latest iteration of warfare and it's nature and tragic effect on the people of the Country. At this rate anything's possible.
I almost dinged this book for Elliot's occasional writing style that dips into the area of over-flowery, fanciful, and meandering, but surprisingly enough if you keep reading, he keeps this distraction to a minimum.
I believe what Elliot achieves with "An Unexpected Light" is the best account of what Afghanistan and its people are like that can be achieved by a Western writer. The reader must be cautioned to not take Elliot's perception at face value for the truth of how Afghani's think and feel and live. That local perspective would have to be gained by a book that was written by an Afghani and translated into English. To my knowledge there isn't a book out there like that available to English readers. If you know of one, by all means shoot it my way.
At first I thought the approach Elliot was taking in writing this book, was to toss himself haphazardly into as many life-threatening situations as humanely possible to experience and still live through it. Through these blood pressure pumping situations, at the end, Elliot would have himself a damn fine book. What I came to realize though is that the book was written about a love affair. A continual burning love affair that Elliot has for the country and especially the people of Afghanistan. That intense love shows, earning this book a special place amongst other travel writings. The work fills a distinct need to learn more about a country that Western nations' find themselves enmeshed in during the ongoing war on terrorism.
Internalize this book. There's a need to make that knowledge your own. Now more than ever.

About the Author
Alan Douglas worked for over 35 years as a seismologist at the Atomic Weapons Establishment, Aldermaston. From 1982 to 2001 he was the Head of the AWE Seismology Group and he continues to act as a consultant to the AWE. For many years he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Reading and is currently a Visiting Professor at University College London. Professor Douglas is the author of over 100 research papers and reports on seismology applied to the verification of nuclear test ban treaties. In 2005 he received the Award for Service to Geophysics from the Royal Astronomical Society, of which he is also a Fellow.

Required Reading for Seismic CTBT Monitoring

This is the only book of it's kind. It could use additional material regarding source theory, but is great regarding it's content on signal processing of seismic signals from clandestine nuclear explosions.
