Priests of Our Democracy: The Supreme Court, Academic Freedom, and the Anti-Communist Purge, by Marjorie Heins

Priests of Our
Democracy tells of the teachers and professors who
battled the anti-communist witch hunt of the 1950s. It traces the political fortunes
of academic freedom beginning in the late 19th century, both on
campus and in the courts. Combining political and legal history with wrenching
personal stories, the book details how the anti-communist excesses of the 1950s
inspired the Supreme Court to recognize the vital role of teachers and
professors in American democracy. The crushing of dissent in the 1950s
impoverished political discourse in ways that are still being felt, and First
Amendment academic freedom, a product of that period, is in peril today. In
compelling terms, this book shows why the issue should matter to everyone.

Review
"With clarity and insight Marjorie Heins brings to life a part of American history often overlooked despite its importance to our democracy today. The tension between individual freedom and national security is as taut as it ever has been. We have much to learn from our earlier mistakes in yielding too readily to claims of the latter. This compelling book, which brilliantly illuminates earlier Supreme Court decisions, and the people and events behind them, is a wonderful place to begin."-Margaret H. Marshall, former Chief Justice, Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court

"Marjorie Heins, a civil liberties lawyer and founder of the Free Expression Policy Project, tracks the collision of politics, academic freedom, free speech, and the Constitution in this dense, well-researched study . . . . This compelling study demonstrates that precedent does not guarantee indefinite protection, and every generation must fight for its freedoms."-Publishers Weekly

"Marjorie Heins has given a human face to leading American controversies and cases about academic freedom, creatively integrating personal interviews and archival sources into her account of the developing law."-David Rabban,University Distinguished Teaching Professor, University of Texas School of Law

"Priests of Our Democracy is a smart, well-crafted insightful book by an especially qualified author."-Michael Steven Smith,Against the Current

"Heins is a cautious analyst... she concludes her valuable study detailing how, over the last half-century, academic freedom continues to be challenged by local officials... Priests of Our Democracy... serve[s] as a reminder that Americans can't take First Amendment rights for granted."-The Brooklyn Rail

“A fascinating read. Heins creatively blends social and legal history to show how the right to academic freedom was forged out of the struggles and passions of America’s worst days of political repression, and why academic freedom is more important than ever today.”-Nadine Strossen, former president, American Civil Liberties Union; professor, New York Law School

"A New York City girl, born and bred, Marjorie Heins provides infectious insight into the major battles waged between New York City teachers and the city government."-American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression

"Combining the legal insights of a constitutional scholar with the archival diligence of an historian, Marjorie Heins has written the definitive study of the Supreme Court’s most important academic freedom decision. It’s an engrossing account of the assault on educators during the McCarthy era that should be required reading for anyone who values our increasingly endangered First Amendment rights."-Ellen Schrecker,Professor of History, Yeshiva University

"Marjorie Heins, a civil liberties lawyer, casts a gimlet eye on New York schools in the early 1950s, when teachers were fired merely for refusing to say whether they were communists . . . . Of course, some teachers were actually communists (and not all priests are perfect). But Ms. Heins's point, which she places in historical and contemporary context, is that 'the American political system is all too vulnerable to political repression and to demonizing the dissenter.' She makes a powerful case."-Sam Roberts,The New York Times

"In this insightful and illuminating history of academic freedom and the Constitution, Marjorie Heins brings to life the characters, controversies, and cases that have framed the evolution of this critical and contentious realm of American liberty."-Geoffrey R. Stone,Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law, University of Chicago

"The author, Marjorie Heins, is a civil-liberties lawyer who provides a meticulous examination of the course of the First Amendment through the courts and the legislation's recognition of academic freedom during the McCarthy era. She also offers a chilling chapter on the consequences for university life since September 11, 2001, and concludes with an argument for the defense of academic freedom."-M.J. Heale,Journal of American History

“[E]xtensively researched and well-written…There are touching accounts of what teachers risked and what many lost…The twists and turns of Supreme Court judgements are not mystified, but explained in terms of its changing political composition and context. This ambitious book then examines some parallels and contrasts with recent sweeping ‘anti-terrorist’ legislation."-Socialist Review

"Priests of Our Democracy is rich with detailed accounts of the many ways teachers and professors have struggled to define their rights of political expression, not only in the McCarthy era but also before and since.  Heins shows that academic freedom is multidimensional, and its meanings are profoundly affected by cultural and political conditions.  It is a narrative that encourages us to believe that substantial progress has been made..."-Richard Flacks,The Journal of Higher Education

"[Hein's] exhaustive research and meticulous analysis of Supreme Court decisions is an important addition to the growing literature on anti-Communism repression of this period....The significance of her book lies in her careful unraveling of the court's rulings on issues of academic freedom, most of them postwar Red Scare cases...This is an important and valuable book for anyone interested in the Constitutional dimension of the anti-Communism that marred the history of the mid-twentieth century U.S....Marjorie Heins has done a remarkable job."-Steve Leberstein,Working USA

"In this well-written study, civil liberties lawyer Heins pens an excellent historical account of the Cold War suppression of academic freedom in the US (at all educational levels) during the heyday of McCarthyism."-W.T. Howard, Bloomsburg University,CHOICE

"Well written, thorough, and full of personal details about the subjects, this is a telling account of teachers' struggle for academic freedom in America."-Harry Charles, St. Louis ,Library Journal

“It is a rare book that meets [Anthony] Lewis’ standard, combining sophisticated legal analysis with compelling historical narrative. Rarer still is one that successfully takes on an era, as opposed to a single case, in ways that are both informative and engaging. Marjorie Heins manages to pull off this rare feat in Priests of Our Democracy. . . . [A]n outstanding book, an engaging and insightful addition to First Amendment scholarship as well as constitutional history.”-Daniel Smith,Law and Politics Book Review

"Fact-filled, balanced, and yet thought-provoking … I recommend this book to students, scholars, and citizens who care about academic freedom and about the fate of public discourse in America. I also recommend Priests of Our Democracy to those who worry that the war against terror has become in part a war against civil rights and civil liberties at home."-Jonah Raskin,Truthout

"The tension between national security and individual freedoms remains today. Heins presents a fascinating perspective on how these tensions became influential in debates over academic freedom, while offering a somewhat scathing review of the high court’s ability to truly lead. Heins reminds the reader that the court more often follows societal trends than pushes towards progress.”-H-Net

“What is ‘academic freedom,’ and why should it deserve special protection? These questions underpin Heins’s history of the efforts to police the politics of schoolteachers and university professors.  As the title suggests, Heins endorses Justice Felix Frankfurter’s assertion that teachers are ‘priests’ of America’s democracy, requiring exceptional freedoms to exchange ideas because of their special responsibility to foster ‘those habits of open-mindedness and critical inquiry which alone make for responsible citizens.’ The book shows how this assertion, and the body of case law underpinning it, emerged in the mid-twentieth century in response to efforts by anticommunists to control the classroom. It examines lawyers, activists, and individual citizens who challenged the establishment.”-Journal of American Studies

"This is an important and valuable book for anyone interested in the Constitutional dimension of the anti-Communism that marred the history of the mid-twentieth century U.S. and that wreaked so much damage on schools, colleges, and unions. Marjorie Heins has done a remarkable job."-The Journal of Labor & Society

"Heins has done a more than admirable job of explaining the history of academic freedom in the United States, especially in New York state and New York City, in the twentieth century."-Clay Calvert ,Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly

"An excellent history of how the law has dealt with academic McCarthyism… Anyone with a stake in education [should read this book] for not only is it a good read about an important subject, but Heins tells a cautionary tale of an extensive and durable problem of which they are probably unaware."-Professor Andrew Feffer,History News Network

"Heins juxtaposes her compelling and distressing account of the anticommunist purges that reached into the ivory towers of our colleges and universities with a chilling cautionary tale that asks whether history is repeating itself through the repressive reactions to 9/11."-Stephen Rohde,Los Angeles Review of Books

"[A] masterpiece of legal journalism... attention-grabbing and compelling."-Alan Wald,Society for U.S. Intellectual History blog

Priests of our Democracy
By Painter Girl
"The Priests of Our Democracy,The Supreme Court, Academic Freedom and The Anti-Communist Purge" reminded me once again of the pleasure to be had from reading a well organized, balanced and relevant historical perspective on issues that affect America today.
The intimidation that existed in academia during the McCarthy years was not new to me; certainly many times I have wondered about the moral courage I might have had during those dark times. The book brought to life the professors, teachers and unions that suffered the times. What was new to me was an historical context going back to before the Popular Front, and to my surprise, I was interested in specific Supreme Court decisions and the legal history involved. Ms Heins, of course, points out how every era has had its scapegoats and prejudices that have challenged free inquiry. She affirms the particular necessity now to be vigilant when the exchange of ideas are suppressed in the service of for example, fighting terrorism or uncritically supporting our allies.. But I'm just scanning. Read the book. You too will find it rewarding to be engaged in such an informative, well organized, book about a dark period in our history. And to holding fast to a vision of America's potential for something better.

How corrupt politicians used loyalty oaths to attack education and promote the myth of communist influence
By Bob Stoner
If a foreign country disabled our best teachers, scientists, diplomats, artists and ordinary citizens their would be a call for a declaration of war. But starting in the 1930's it was not a foreign power that did this, It was a group of corrupt politicians (Senator McCarthy-who came later.,et.al,), bureaucrats ( Mr.Edgar Hoover and others in the Justice Department). lawyers. and paid perjurers who went on a crusade to promote their careers by promoting the myth of communist power over America,

Ms. Heins describes how loyalty oaths and lists of "subversive" organizations were used to crush reasonable discourse of complex problems, This discourse is needed to keep democracy strong. Most of the book deals with the New York teachers but they were among the key figures in the court cases that led to academic freedom.

The court cases are complex but Ms Heins outlines them so that a non-lawyer can follow the story as it unfolds. Anyone interested in academic freedom, the importance of the Bill of Rights and why this problem could recur in another guise should read this great book.

The Erotic Life of Racism, by Sharon Patricia Holland

A major intervention in the fields of critical race theory, black feminism, and queer theory, The Erotic Life of Racism contends that theoretical and political analyses of race have largely failed to understand and describe the profound ordinariness of racism and the ways that it operates as a quotidian practice. If racism has an everyday life, how does it remain so powerful and yet mask its very presence? To answer this question, Sharon Patricia Holland moves into the territory of the erotic, understanding racism's practice as constitutive to the practice of racial being and erotic choice.

Reemphasizing the black/white binary, Holland reinvigorates critical engagement with race and racism. She argues that only by bringing critical race theory, queer theory, and black feminist thought into conversation with each other can we fully envision the relationship between racism and the personal and political dimensions of our desire. The Erotic Life of Racism provocatively redirects our attention to a desire no longer independent of racism but rather embedded within it.

Recent scandals involving the use of human body parts have highlighted the need for legal clarification surrounding property law and the use of human tissue. This book advances the notion that the legal basis for dealing with this is already available in the law but has thus far neither been used nor discussed. Proposing an alternative approach to constructing entitlements in human tissue and resolving resulting property conflicts, a new methodology is also advanced for abstracting different concepts within the debate which enables comparison and distinction between different cases of entitlement and retention.

Review
'Hoppe presents a provocative analysis, challenging conventional property solutions and instead outlining a new 'bioequity' in human material through the use of the law of equity. Bioequity - Property and the Human Body will be a valuable resource for lawyers and ethicists alike.' Jean V. McHale, University of Birmingham, UK 'In this book, Nils Hoppe has added significantly to the debate surrounding the regulation of human material. Drawing together ethical and legal sources, he has identified the weaknesses in previous thinking and also provided a highly original alternative perspective through the notion of bioequity. An interesting and significant contribution to the debate.' Jose Miola, University of Leicester, UK 'From John Moore's splenic cells, to the Alder Hey debacle, and the purloining of Alastair Cooke's bones: the use and abuse of the human body and human biomaterials, as well as providing a seemingly limitless fuel for media consumption, has captured the imagination of the academy. Nils Hoppe's book is a welcome addition to the burgeoning literature in the area.' Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy

At a time when surveys reveal that Americans know less and less about our past, Tony Williams provides entertaining and informative descriptions of 50 of the most important and dramatic events from the colonial and Revolutionary period—some known and some forgotten—from the Mayflower Compact to the Annapolis Convention. Published in association with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, America's Beginnings takes the reader throughout the American colonies and introduces many leading figures, from John Smith and John Winthrop to the Founding Fathers. Along the way, Williams examines the principles that led colonists to come to America and succeeding generations to become a free and independent nation. Review
America's Beginnings breathes new life into many of the people responsible for creating and implementing the fundamental principles and virtues of our republic. Tony Williams transports the reader back through a beautiful and rugged landscape and fills it with stories of the 17th and 18th century Americans whose lives gave structure, direction, and meaning to our shared national narrative. Williams' stories provide a primer on courage, perseverance, and optimism that will serve today's citizens well. (Michael Hartoonian, Scholar in Residence at Hamline University, St. Paul)

America's Beginnings tells the story of what Declaration of Independence signer Richard Henry Lee called “the vineyard of liberty.” Like the making of a fine wine, the success of the early American republic was far from inevitable. Tony Williams compellingly captures the difficulties and triumphs of early Americans. He tells of our beginnings with appreciation for the extraordinary accomplishments of the American Founders. This is civic-minded history at its best, and offers rich reading for citizens young and old alike. (David J. Bobb, Hillsdale College Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship)

America's Beginnings: An Excellent Primer
By President Cleveland
This short volume by Tony Williams is an excellent primer for young and old alike. It also makes for a great review of events that forged our nation. The book is organized in such a way that it can be easily read cover-to-cover, while the reader seeking only snippets is satisfied as well. In this work, Mr. Williams' writing is accessible enough for younger readers, making the book applicable to classroom situations. That should not be interpreted to mean that this volume should be relegated to the classroom. To the contrary, this nice little book should be on shelves in many homes as it reminds readers of the events that led to the creation of the nation. That said, I would also like to point out that this book, unlike others written by Tony Williams, does not read like a novel. I can't imagine it was intended to read that way. Readers expecting a cohesive page-turner might be disappointed. On the other hand, taken for what it is, it is a wonderful little book.

From Schoolboy to Soldier, by Quincy S. Abbot

From Schoolboy to Soldier reveals the short but meaningful life of a mid-19th century New England lad. From age 12 to 21, Stanley Abbot faithfully wrote entries in his personal journal and letters describing his daily life, sharing his thoughts about work at a Boston, Massachusetts A wholesale druggist, school days at Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard, and discussing challenging relationships with father and elder brother Edwin. Young Stanley wrote of struggles with himself, siblings, parents, and the world as he grew into a responsible adult and an officer in the Union Army, following in the footsteps of his renowned Great Granduncle Nathan Hale. He wrote his family members about his reasons for joining the Union Army, the routines of camp life, the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, and the long march from Virginia to Gettysburg where his unit engaged in battle near Little Round Top and where he succumbed to a mortal wound on July 8, 1863. Stanley wrote of his longing to become an acknowledged writer and, now, with the publication of this book 150 years later, his exceptional skill is brought to light by author Quincy S. Abbot, his grand-nephew.

Not Just for History Buffs
By Susan A. Pelletier
I have to say up front that this is not the type of book I typically would choose to read--I'm not a big history buff, nor do I read non-fiction books very often. But once I started reading "From Schoolboy to Soldier," I couldn't put it down. Stanley is such an interesting guy, and he tells his story with great flair. You really get a feel for who he was through the letters, and the footnotes add interesting details and asides that add more depth to the story that unfolds as Stanley grows up. His relationships with his family, friends, and eventually fellow soldiers, his takes on the politics of his times, and how he fits into his world, all gave me a sense of what it must have been like to live in that era. But what was really striking was just how little some things have changed, especially when it comes to what we most love, and fear, and wonder about.

The book made me laugh, it made me cry, and it makes me wish that Stanley had lived a much longer life. His is a unique and special voice, and I can only wonder at what he might have become if he had been able to live to a ripe old age. The story this book tells--and it really is a story--moved me in ways I did not expect. Just a terrific read all the way around.

A Personal Account of a Young Soldier's Experiences
By Mother of two
This collection of letters and journal entries from Stanley Abbot, a boy who aspired to be a writer and who died at Gettysburg as a young Union soldier, is funny, informative and touching. His early teenage letters include amusing cartoons and stories of his life as an apprentice to a wholesale druggist in Boston. After a year away at school, he entered Harvard. There he was under the stern but affectionate eye of an elder brother, who carefully doled out money for his expenses. However, after some soul searching, he left less than halfway through, to become a soldier.

His later letters describe the day-to-day life of a soldier, dealing with cold rains and boot-sucking mud. He asked to be sent a heavy coat from home. They also describe his beliefs, his hopes and fears. His private journal and the letters written to his family and a young woman who had caught his eye, all prove that Stanley was right when he aspired be a writer.

This well researched book also contains photographs, maps, and helpful explanations about the people and places Stanley mentions in his letters. It reads like a story, but is surely a treasury of historical detail as well.

Bioethics, Medicine and the Criminal Law: 3 (Cambridge Bioethics and Law), by Margaret Brazier, Suzanne Ost

To date, little analysis exists of the criminal process's roles as a regulator of medical practice and as an arbiter of bioethics, nor whether criminal law is an appropriate forum for judging ethical medical dilemmas. The conscription of criminal law into moral controversy and the (perceived) rise in criminal investigations of medical errors sets the backdrop for this innovative historical and theoretical analysis of the relationship between medicine, bioethics and the criminal process. Case studies on abortion, end of life and the separation of conjoined twins reveal how judges grapple with bioethics in criminal cases and the impact of 'theatre' on the criminal law's response to ethically controversial medical cases. A central argument is that bioethics and criminal law are not necessarily incompatible; rather, it is the theatre surrounding interactions between bioethics and criminal law that often distorts and creates tension.

The Shaolin Monastery: History, Religion, and the Chinese Martial Arts, by Meir Shahar

The Shaolin Monastery charts for the first time in any language the history of the Shaolin Temple and the evolution of its world-renowned martial arts. In this meticulously researched and eminently readable study Meir Shahar considers the economic political and religious factors that led Shaolin monks to disregard the Buddhist prohibition against violence and instead create fighting techniques that by the 21st century have spread throughout the world. Meir Shahar is associate professor in the Dept of East Asian Studies Tel Aviv University.

Academically rigourous and thoroughly readable
By Eli Moshe
I came to this work as both an academic and a practitioner of a Shaolin style of pushing hands. The evolution of the Shaolin arts from staff fighting to unarmed styles is explored in great detail from a variety of sources (many of which are primary and have been translated here for the first time).

This is one of the first books I've read that makes a scholarly attempt at explaining how the Buddhist monks of Shaolin successfully negotiated the cognitive dissonance caused by commitment to Buddhist principles of non-violence on one hand and mastery of martial arts on the other.

The book also succeeds in recognising and clarifying the role of Daoist thought and cultivation practices (namely the Dao Yin) in the development of Shaolin Gung Fu.

Some of the conclusions (especially in relation to the unarmed styles) lend some support to Nathan Johnson's (2000) thesis 'Barefoot Zen'. After long and careful study of the forms of Shaolin Gung Fu and Karate Kata, Johnson contended that these arts were never intended for fighting (whereas Shahar would likely contend that fighting was not their sole purpose, p.180 and p.200).

Slayer of martial arts myth
By Jim R. McClanahan
Here are some of the more interesting points covered, including the slaying of commonly held martial arts myth:

1) Although he is not sure when the monks began to learn how to wield weapons, Shahar states they were practicing the use of military weapons (sword, spear, bow, etc.) as early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The monks chosen to learn these skills protected the monastery from mountain bandits that regularly laid siege to the complex. However, these monks were not apart of the religiously devout vegetarian body that lived within the monastery proper. They lived in small clusters located outside of the monastery and regularly broke the Buddhist precepts against eating meat, drinking alcohol, and killing. They were allowed to do this because of their distance from the monastery and the protection they provided. The allowances for killing were also connected to their religious beliefs.

2) The martial monks worshiped a Buddhist guardian deity called "Vajrapani," one of the Buddha's body guards. Legends tell how he regularly killed demons and other evil creatures that threatened the Buddha or Buddhism in general. Hence, this was all the justification the military monks needed to kill. This deity was always portrayed in Indian art with a club, but the Chinese eventually changed it to a staff (contemporary stelae located on the Monastery grounds attests to this). Vajrapani figures in Shaolin legend as the progenitor of their legendary staff method. Hence, he was connected to Shaolin arts CENTURIES before Bodhidharma.

3) Chinese fiction had a great influence on Shaolin legends. For instance, the Monkey King from the tale Journey to the West influenced the aforementioned staff legend. The legend takes place during the Red Turban Rebellion of the Yuan Dynasty. Bandits lay siege to the monastery, but it is saved by a lowly kitchen worker wielding a long fire poker as a makeshift staff. He leaps into the oven and emerges as a monstrous giant big enough to stand astride both Mount Song and the imperial fort atop Mount Shaoshi (which are five miles apart). The bandits flee when they behold this staff-wielding titan. The Shaolin monks later realize that the kitchen worker was none other than Vajrapani in disguise. Shahar compares the worker's transformation in the stove with Sun's time in Laozi's crucible, their use of the staff, and the fact that Sun and his weapon can both grow to gigantic proportions

4) Empty-handed boxing did not develop at Shaolin until the late Ming Dynasty. Before then, they were only known for their staff and spear methods. Because the Ming Dynasty revered the "Three religions" (Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism) as one universal teaching, during this time, Shaolin also studied Taoist gymnastics (stretching and breathing exorcises). These exercises were eventually combined with fist arts (in and outside the monastery) to create a new form of cultivation consisting of gymnastics, religious rituals, and combative techniques.

5) Bodhidharma was not connected with Shaolin fighting arts until the 17th century. Prior to this, he was only considered the progenitor of Chan Buddhism. The first published source that mentions Bodhidharma in connection with Shaolin arts is the Sinew Changing Classic, which was written by a Taoist in 1624. This is the source for all current legends that state he taught monks exercises to strengthen their bodies. However, as originally conceived, these exercises ultimately ended in immortality. Practitioners of the 17th century "internal school," which predates the creation of Taiji, and eventually died out, combined the Wu Dang priest Zhang Sanfeng with a Taoist God (The Dark Warrior) to create a Taoist equivalent of Bodhidharma. Hence, Bodhi became the legendary progenitor of the "External" or "Northern school" and Zhang the "internal" or "Southern school."

6) Shaolin's fame from the Tang till today was derived solely from their expertise in choosing the correct side to fight for in struggles between warring factions. For instance, Shaolin fought for the New Tang emperor, guaranteeing their future for centuries. Had they fought for the other side, they would have been exterminated. During the Tang, Buddhism was targeted because of it's foreign origins. Monks were sent home to lay life (or killed) and their monasteries where destroyed. But Shaolin was allowed to stay open ONLY because of its help to the Tang founder. Shahar gives an example of the reverse (a bad political choice). The Shaolin Temple was burnt in 1928 because they chose a side and lost.

The foremost scholar on Shaolin today...
By Eightfish
Meir is the foremost expert outside of China (and possibly even within China) on the history of the Shaolin Temple. An academic book by an amazing scholar, and a must read for anyone serious about learning the in-depth history of Shaolin, and martial arts, as he traces the history back 1500+ years. Scholarly, well written, peer reviewed, with loads of annotations...

A great book if you're seeking insight of the origins of Kung Fu If you are not seriously interested in martial arts, and their Shaolin China roots, this book is probably not for you.

The Cooked Seed: A Memoir, by Anchee Min

In 1994, Anchee Min made her literary debut with a memoir of growing up in China during the violent trauma of the Cultural Revolution. Red Azalea became an international bestseller and propelled her career as a successful, critically acclaimed author. Twenty years later, Min returns to the story of her own life to give us the next chapter, an immigrant story that takes her from the shocking deprivations of her homeland to the sudden bounty of the promised land of America, without language, money, or a clear path.

It is a hard and lonely road. She teaches herself English by watching Sesame Street, keeps herself afloat working five jobs at once, lives in unheated rooms, suffers rape, collapses from exhaustion, marries poorly and divorces. But she also gives birth to her daughter, Lauryann, who will inspire her and finally root her in her new country. Min's eventual successes-her writing career, a daughter at Stanford, a second husband she loves-are remarkable, but it is her struggle throughout toward genuine selfhood that elevates this dramatic, classic immigrant story to something powerfully universal.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Min’s first book, Red Azalea (1994), was an electrifying memoir. Six singular novels followed, including Becoming Madame Mao (2000) and Pearl of China (2010). Now Min returns to her own astonishing life story. She writes, as always, with singeing candor and devastating precision as she chronicles the severe poverty and brutality of her childhood in Shanghai, her grim years in a labor camp, and her friendship with the girl who became the actress Joan Chen and helped Min immigrate to the U.S. But Min’s ordeal was far from over when she arrived in Chicago to attend art school. With no English and no money, she lived in constant fear of deportation while contending with the shock of American racism, exploitative jobs, wretched living conditions, criminal scams, crushing loneliness, illness, even rape. Her brief marriage turned into a living hell when they naively purchase a dilapidated apartment building. But Min gave birth to her daughter and started writing in English, an extraordinary and resounding creative breakthrough that finally set her free. Min’s indomitable and magnificent memoir spans the full spectrum of the human experience, elucidates her noble mission as a writer, and portrays a woman of formidable strength and conviction. “I was broken yet standing determinedly erect. I could be crushed, but I would not be conquered.” --Donna Seaman

Min's tenacity and triumphs are remarkable, and her story is worth telling
By Bookreporter
At first glance, Anchee Min's life looks like an American Dream story come true. As a young woman, she moves to the U.S. in hopes of achieving a better life. Once there, she succeeds in getting undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Art Institute of Chicago, builds a family, and becomes a bestselling author. But Min's story is not a simple path from point A to B. In fact, the route she takes to international fame is frequently traumatic, terrifying and devastating. It is a testament to Min's resilience and drive that her story becomes the one told in THE COOKED SEED.

Min grew up during the Cultural Revolution in China and spent her childhood dreaming of being able to fight American enemies in the name of Mao and Communism. But her understanding of the world shifts when she is sent to a collective labor camp at 17. "Discovered" by Madame Mao and chosen to star in propaganda films, she becomes convinced that the only way to avoid a wretched fate is to escape to the U.S. after Mao's death in 1976.

Luck and boldness allow Min to enter the States as a student, despite the fact that she speaks no English and has no one to help her once she arrives in Chicago. Through perseverance, she struggles through her classes, paying her way by working up to five jobs at a time. Her incredible poverty is capped by a number of horrific experiences in Chicago, including multiple robberies and rape. Marrying and divorcing in her mid-30s, she finds herself remaking her life once more, now accompanied by her daughter Lauryann.

Many of the incidents that Min relates casually are hard to believe. Experiencing even one of these terrifying events could be tragedy enough to derail a life. Yet she does not dwell on the miraculous nature of her survival; she simply continues living. Of course, this is her reality. While many would turn to family or friends, Min has no options. In her early years, fear dominates her experience: she can't return to China, even for a short time, for fear that she will be unable to leave; she can't stop going to classes for fear she will lose her visa; and she can't fight the people who take advantage of her because she fears government attention of any kind.

Min's final portrait is rife with human contradiction, which creates the impression that you could know someone like her (although you may know no one who comes close to having experienced anything remotely similar). She is admirable, but most admirably, she is also aware of her own flaws. Implacable when confident, she doesn't gloss over times when she has behaved badly or been at the mercy of others. She rules over Lauryann with an iron fist, demanding high grades and forcing her seven-year-old to assist her with heavy work on apartment restoration.

Min clearly has a strong desire to justify this harshness. While she marries again to a man who has a similar child-rearing philosophy, she spends much of the latter part of the book illustrating that her demands ultimately served Lauryann well, and that Lauryann has come to appreciate her mother's nature. Even were this untrue, it would not alter the story significantly. It is nicer to think that Lauryann ultimately understands Min's demands, but Min has just led the reader through the events that formed her identity and made her see the world the way she does. Knowing this, we understand why she treats her daughter as she does, whether we think it is overly harsh or not.

Lauryann's suggestion that Min write a memoir seems a clear indicator of what the reader has learned over the course of the book: no matter her shortcomings, Min's tenacity and triumphs are remarkable, and her story is worth telling.

"No Chance to Sprout"
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
As Anchee Min's newest book, The Cooked Seed, opens, she is about to land in Chicago. She has no money except a borrowed $500, does not speak English, and is terrified. She is 27 years old "and life had ended for me in China. I was Madame Mao's trash, which meant that I wasn't worth spit. I was considered a `cooked seed' - no chance to sprout."

By some miracle she has maintained a Visa and is accepted into the Chicago Art Institute. It appears that she has studied very little, if any, art but she attends classes and works several jobs at the same time. She frequently describes herself as crushed, defeated and fearful. Her goal is to get a green card and she has no idea how she can attain one.

Ms. Min was very ill in China and her health is fragile in the United States. She passes out many times and deals with coughing up blood, stomach problems, and other health issues. She has horrible memories of her time in Mao's labor camps and is referred to a psychiatrist but she is unable to open up about her feelings.

She meets a man with whom she lives for six years. However, the relationship is not a good one. He sees himself as a sage and Ms. Min is practical. She works hard and he prefers to sleep or give out words of wisdom. She does have a child with him and Lauryann becomes the love of her life. It is interesting to me how much Ms. Min wanted a boy instead of a girl. This is a very cultural wish.

Reading about the way she raises Lauryann reminded me of the book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. Lauryann is raised very strictly and in the Chinese way. She helps her mother with duties like plumbing, electric work, painting, and construction. She has little time for play and is taught that she must work to attain goals from an early age. It obviously paid off academically because Lauryann gets into Stanford University.

Ms. Min builds up the courage to leave her partner and moves to California where she meets the man of her dreams. It takes a while but it happens through a dating service. Meanwhile, she has written several memoirs and novels and has become a very successful author.

I enjoyed the book but a lot of it was repetitive from Red Azalea which I read and loved. Ms. Min spends a lot of time on some of the same things that were covered in that book and which I feel could have been better edited. These are small criticisms as overall, the book is quite heartrending and educational. To see how Ms. Min triumphs over all her problems and obstacles is a miracle.

Great narrative, but some of it hard to believe
By silhouette_of_enchantment
Anchee Min has a beautiful writing style, and a compelling story about her immigration (which was more like an escape from the camps) from China to the United States as an art student. She's also a good friend of Josie Chen (of Twin Peaks fame). Min survived poverty, a devastating rape, sweat shops, and other calamities. She also worked hard, lived through a really bad marriage and divorce, found love again, and raised her daughter.

Although I enjoyed reading her book, I began to question whether or not Min was completely honest. Beautiful, persuasive prose does not mean its factual. She recounted -- at length -- conversations she had (in English) with a college roommate and other friends. At this time, remember, Min immigrated to the country (as a student)only knowing a few words of English. How would she have conversations on race, slavery, President Reagan, friendship, etc; when she first arrived in the country, if she couldn't read or speak English fluently? She was nearly deported when she first touched American shores, because she didn't understand English.

Min even admitted (months after the above conversations took place) that she nearly failed an art course, because she didn't understand English, well, and it took her watching episodes of Sesame Street and other shows to learn the language. So, I found her conversations (when she first immigrated) extremely hard to believe, and made me question other facts she presented in her book.

I wanted to believe Min was being an honest narrator, but by the end, I just started to question her veracity.
