About the Author
An experimental writer, Cecile Rossant combines poetry and prose in About Face in order to reveal how poetic form influences narrative form. A student of biology, painting, sculpture and architecture, Cecile moved from New York to Tokyo, and finally Berlin, where she has worked as an architect. A twenty-first century Renaissance woman, Rossant is like the great artists and thinkers of that era, as her work is profoundly humanistic. In "Horizontal Drainage," for instance, Rossant explores the question of whether it is possible for a person really to reject one's historically-defined past for a new identity, bringing to the reader's mind an awareness for the paradox of humanistic study, in which one must alienate oneself from humanity in order to study humanity.

It's not that I don't like poetry. It's just that I can't actually seem to read it. For dunces of verse like me Cecile Rossant's About Face can come in quite handy. This eclectic jumble of short fiction, ranging in length from three and a half lines to 23 pages, sucks you in under the pretence of being short stories and before you know it, lo-and-behold, you realise you're reading a poem. It may not always look like a poem, or even sound like one, but Rossant's writing is so beautiful, so lyrical that by the end of the collection there is no doubt: poetry it must be.

Cecile Rossant grew up and studied in New York and has now been living in Berlin for eight years. She stands out in the mass of aspiring English-language authors in the city in that she can actually write. In fact, as a qualified architect, with a degree in biology, who also throws together the occasional sculpture, there doesn't seem much that this woman can't do. But it's writing that Rossant is now focusing on with her short fiction debut.

These stories are about as indecent and shocking as your dreams: Death, sex, violence and illicit yearnings. This is a world where women are brought to orgasm by corpses' sawn-off fingers and your lover can die after a post-coital snooze. And even more surprising is that all this is recounted in a tone often verging on the hilarious. I didn't know it was even possible to pour scorn on the sex industry and be witty at the same time. After reading "The Tuna Club" and "Appropriate Actions" I now see it is. In other stories, such as "She Twists to Position Her Face", Rossant demonstrates such empathy for the fat and the unattractive that by the end you will never make fun of the audience of Jerry Springer again. And in the excellent "Horizontal Damage" you are brought closer to the Holocaust in six pages than Stephen Spielberg managed in one-and-a-half hours.

But be warned: like dreams, these stories are also hard to read. For some of them, you have to be either heavily into Cocteau or really in the mood. Even then, page after page describing the skinning of a chicken, as in "The Belly of a Bird", can prove somewhat of a strain. And don't expect clear hints as to what, if any, the story is. Because you won't always get them. There were moments when I couldn't help but wonder if I was in competition with the author to prove who was the cleverer: her for writing it, or me for grasping the point. She might have won. But I enjoyed the game. So forget your pre-conceptions about narrative and just roll with the beauty of the language. A rewarding, at times delectable, dream-like experience which stays with you long after you think you've woken up.

About the Author
Andrew Harris is a professor at Université Blaise Pascal (Clermont Ferrand, France) and holder of the Chaire d'Excellence for the Auvergne region. He is a member of the Remote Sensing Society, IAVCEI and AGU and has worked with a variety of ground- and satellite-based thermal data sets, having deployed experiments at active volcanoes in Africa, Europe, Central America, South America and Hawaii. Dr Harris has published over 130 publications in international scientific journals dedicated to thermal remote sensing and volcanology. His work has been recognised by several awards, including IAVCEI's Wager medal (2004) and the University of Hawai'i Regents' Medals for both excellence in research (2003) and teaching (2005).

A must read

If you are interested in thinking critically about any aspect of equality, diversity and inclusion this is a must. Ahmed does a very good job in teasing out the pragmatic and discursive processes through which, that despite decades of equality legislation and institutional statements and initiatives aimed at expanding race equality and ethnic diversity, UK universities remain so far behind the starting gate of really getting to grips with the perpetuation of institutional racism at all levels.

Dark Flight Loved it!

This time we find Kara, Gavin, and Julian working together to bring down Brakken. Brakken is Gavin's father and is the pure evil. Brakken wants Kara for what she has done to his sons, he is also looking to make Gavin suffer with raising Gavin's son as his own. Kara is trying to help save Gavin's son as well as the other women from Brakken; they also need to save her clan and themselves. The only way to do this is to send Brakken to the abyss.

Kara is determined to help with the battle and Julian and Gavin want her to stay away. Kara learns of ways to help and takes matters into her own hands. The guys are not too happy about this when they find out. However Kara says Julian has no right over her after what he did to her. Gavin just wants to keep her safe so helps her on her journey. Kara goes through some big changes in the book but it has helped her grow. She has the help from all her closest friends Abbey, Jaxon, the witch coven, and the clan. Julian also goes through some big changes as he has to learn what life as a black wing is like and how to control his new powers.

So do they save the baby, the women and life as they know it? Does Kara learn to control her new powers? Can Gavin come to terms with everything happening to him? What about Julian is he able to learn to live again? I guess you will just have to read to find out.

I so can't get enough of this series and can't wait for more. I look forward to what twist and turns are to come. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have. :-)

I almost made the very big mistake of reading this book as a standalone and hoping that I'd be able to pick up the story from the previous two books... I'm such an idiot!

This series is a trilogy and should be read as such and after reading the first few pages I did get so mightily confused that I picked up the first two and started over. Don't be an idiot like me and try to read this as a standalone, it seriously doesn't work AND you'll miss the wonders of the first two books.

Carver has managed to create a whole new world in these books, one that leaves you gasping for more and more. After finishing the first book I couldn't wait to start on the second one. The books are pacy enough to keep you hooked but not too drawn out to get you wishing time on.

The book has a very intriguing love triangle and I didn't feel any allegiance to either Gavin or Julian but lucky Kara! With this being the final part of this series, it all was tied up nicely with some of the secondary characters from the earlier books. I really like that attention to detail as some authors can ignore the full cast and I appreciate that Carver had thought this through.

The book seems to allude to more so maybe there will be a fourth book, if not there is plenty more here to write about with different side stories and relationships. Well done Cassi, another favourite series :)

Twists and Turns keeping me on my toes

This is the third book in the Shadow Slayers series by Cassi Carver. I just can't get over how great this world and the characters are. Just about the time I think I have a handle on how things are going to go, the author flips or twists things around. It certainly is keeping me on my toes and very interested.

This story opens a few months after the close of book 2, Shadow Rising. Kara is training hard with Gavin, although with a score of only 17 to Gavin's 316 it feels like she is never going to get the hang of things. Kara has finally accepted that she is a part of Mercury Clan, but she continues to live in and work in San Diego. Much to Gavin's chagrin.

Gavin is working to get Julian's assistance in helping to take out his father, Brakken. Gavin truly believes that Kara won't be safe until Brakken has been sent to the Abyss. But Julian is still having trouble using his powers. So Gavin is trying to get another black wing, Mazeki, to help Julian, but he also must convince Julian to allow the training. Mazeki was the blackwing that assisted Kara's father before she was even born and they hope will come to her aid once again.

Unbeknownst to Gavin and Julian, who are busy plotting to keep Kara safe and out of the Shadowlands, Aiden visits Kara with an invitation from Mazeki. Aiden tells Kara that Mazeki has promised to help train Julian, but only if he can have a meeting with Kara. Gavin refused and never told Kara. So of course, Kara has Aiden take her to meet with Mazeki. And meet with him she does. Alone. No Adian, no Gavin and no Julian. Not surprising Kara finds out some disturbing news and is given a task to complete in order to aid Julian.

Boy oh boy, the twisty and turny mind of Ms. Carver is amazing. Just when I thought I knew where we were headed, the unexpected would surprise me. I don't think this will be the last book in the series. (I really, really, hope it's not!) We are left with yet another surprise at the very end, giving us a nice set up for the next book. I have to go 4 stars on Goodreads and hope that book 4 comes soon.

Chris Raschka has a winner in SERIOUSLY, NORMAN! --- his first foray into the novel format

Norman Normann has not scored too highly on his first attempt at the entrance exam to a fancy high school. Norman's parents --- who happen to be named Orman and Norma Normann --- are appalled and frantic. Only one thing will do, and that is for them to get Norman a tutor who will help him to score better on next year's "Amalgamated Academic Independent City Schools Test." The well-meaning but rather dim-witted Normann parents can only find one tutor on short notice, a strange, beaky-nosed, sharp-eyed man by the name of Balthazar Birdsong, whom Norman's best friend, Leonard, promptly nicknames "Bald Beezer Bird Poop" behind his back.

Balthazar's views on teaching turn out to be eccentric and startling. During their first tutoring session, Balthazar tells Norman that he must explore the dictionary from A-Z, mastering one letter every two weeks. Oddly enough, whatever words Norman runs across in the dictionary seem to connect prophetically to the events in his life, such as trying to figure out if his money-obsessed father is involved in nefarious business dealings. Norman suspects him of selling bombers to mustachioed, fur-hatted men from the faraway land of Alfur, and it appears the dictionary entries may lead him to some answers.

Norman and his friends Leonard, and the twins Anna and Emma, all slowly fall under Balthazar's spell. The old tutor declares his intention to get the children to take their heads and noses out of their textbooks and back into the clouds, where they belong. Indeed, one of the activities he prescribes for Norman is for the boy to simply observe the sky each day, drawing no conclusions at all. Balthazar does little in the way of formal teaching, simply urging the kids to observe and to explore. He even encourages them to take a trip into the city by themselves to visit him in his apartment where he lives with his pets Watson and Crick, who happen to be a rat and a crow, respectively.

Balthazar's unorthodox teaching style is not without its risks, however, as Leonard learns when he falls out of a great tree that the tutor urges the children to climb. However, under Balthazar's tutelage, they find themselves slowly maturing and expanding their worldview. These lessons come in handy when Norman's father's shady business dealings get him into big trouble, and it is up to the children to put their year of lessons to good use and journey to Singapore to rescue Mr. Normann from the clutches of the evil Alfurnians.

Balthazar's teaching style appears to be lackadaisical and rather odd (bringing to mind the Karate Kid movies), but has the effect of helping the children to grow up. The novel gently pokes fun at today's frenzied parenting, when a more relaxed and even whimsical approach might yield better results in the long term. Those parents who remember their own childhoods as less orchestrated affairs as compared to the lives of modern young people will identify with the main themes here.

SERIOUSLY, NORMAN! is a fast-paced and high-spirited slice of utter and enjoyable silliness. The dialogue is zippy and punchy, and the interactions among Norman, Leonard, Anna, Emma and their tutor are engaging. While this may not be a book that will appeal to every kid, for those who like a play on words and a quirky, inventive style, it's going to provide some very good laughs. Bold drawings strewn through the pages often illustrate scenes from Norman's life or the dictionary entries that he encounters, and add visual interest and humorous touches to the novel.

Chris Raschka, a past winner of the Caldecott Medal for THE HELLO, GOODBYE WINDOW and for YO! YES? has a winner in SERIOUSLY, NORMAN! --- his first foray into the novel format.

One of the best children's books - EVER

This book, perfect for boys ages 9-99, is simply amazing. Hysterically funny. A young boy's journey to the world of an open mind. At one point the protagonists translate "chicken butt" (as in, Q: What? A: chicken butt!) into German - sort of. "Hooner Po!" My son and his best friend now cry as they kids their bikes. Did you or your kid love E. B. White? Madeline L'Engle? The Phantom Tollbooth? Hugo? E. Nesbit? Judy Blume? What can i do to convince you that your son will love this book and will hysterically laugh, while becoming a better person for having read it? Tell you that the term "shitten kitten mitten" is used appropriately? Anyone who doesn't love this book is dead inside and has no soul.

Great book for the right kind of kid

This book reminds me of The Wednesday Wars The Wednesday Wars, because NOT EVERY KID WILL LIKE IT. But the kids that do like it, will LOVE it.

I'm a mom with a family of boys. I think ... maybe 1 will like this book and read it to the end. And that's ok -- he will get the humor, remember the vocabulary, follow the plot, and love the book.

Resilience

I love self-help books and while some can be the same old tired advice recycled I found this one very useful and written in a lively, chatty style. It felt as though I had a good friend sitting next to me looking at my life and my problems and telling me how to bounce back on a day to day basis as well as in the face of major problems.

Resilience is what makes a person able to deal with problems and stress and come out smiling. Optimism and looking on the bright side of life are a huge part of it. If you always imagine the worst in any situation you aren't helping yourself to deal with things in a practical way and you may focus on what could happen rather than on what you can change for the better.

The author talks about seeing problems as opportunities - referred to as `probortunities'. Looking at problems from a different perspective may help you deal with them in more creative ways. The book is full of inspiring examples of people - famous and not so famous - who have bounced back from terrible tragedies and made something of their lives. There are also lots of inspiring quotations from many different sources.

The book starts with a questionnaire which the reader can answer to assess how resilient they already are and then goes on to look at the various aspects of resilience and ways of increasing resilience. There is the text of `Desiderata' at the end together with forty things you can do to help yourself feel better, top 20 survival songs, and a section on useful resources which includes books and websites. My copy of the book is bristling with post it notes and scribbled pencil notes in the margin and I know I will be referring to it again and again.

Inside African Anthropology offers an incisive biography of the life and work of South Africa's foremost social anthropologist, Monica Hunter Wilson. Andrew Bank is Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He has been commissioning editor of the journal Kronos: Southern African Histories since 2001 and is a member of the editorial board for the South African Historical Journal.

Leslie J. Bank is Professor of Social Anthropology and Director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research at the University of Fort Hare, South Africa. He is the author of Home Spaces, Street Styles: Contesting Power and Identity in a South African City (2011). He is a member of the editorial board of the International Africa Institute journal, Africa, and is the current president of the Association for Anthropology in Southern Africa.

A great book for the true Dallas fans!

Haley expresses his views (openly) on everything from racism in the NFL to the physical and emotional toll the game takes on its players. He doesn't hold anything back and just tells it how it is. Not many players get to play for two great teams (like the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers) and win Super Bowls with each. He's a legendary player and that explains why he's the only man to earn five Super Bowl rings. This is a very well-written book and a great one for the true Dallas fans!

Very blunt, but very good.

I enjoyed Charles Haley's book very much. He talks VERY openly about the NFL and the pressures put on every player. Pressure from the coaches, the media, and the players themselves. Not to mention the disregard many players show for their own health to keep playing, and the drugs they take to do so. I enjoyed Charles' style very much. Some may find it offensive, but if you expected anything different from him what were you thinking when you bought the book?

I love Haley!

I read the book when it was first released and actually I just "happened" upon it. I was and am still the BIGGEST Charles Haley fan and I was just looking to get any memorablia that I could. I thought the book was great because it explained why he played so hard and why he felt the way he did about things going on in the NFL. I think that he is a great player and he is just misunderstood by players, coaches and fans alike. If you read the book then you would gain more insight on him and his thinking. And being one of his biggest fans, I guess that I am a bit biased on this review. But he was very frank and candid in his portrayal of the NFL. He didn't sugarcoat anything. Also it showed how committed he was to playing the sport and committed to his personal life as well. The only thing that could have changed was some of the foul language but again I think that that was just him being Charles Haley. Anyone knowing anything about him knows that he does not hold his tongue, not even on live television. So you would have to expect that from his writing. I would love for him to read this so he will know that he has one devoted fan in me!
