About the Author
Alessandro De Maddalena is the curator of the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank and a founding member of the Mediterranean Shark Research Group. He is the author of 17 books on sharks and teaches a course in shark biology in Simon's Town, South Africa, in association with Apex Shark Expeditions. Walter Heim, a mechanical engineer, started photographing sharks in 2001 and with his daughter Jessica has developed techniques to photograph mako and blue sharks at close range. His pictures have appeared in many books and wildlife magazines.

Such evidence is compelling!

Whilst I have never seen a Great White Shark underwater, I have encountered many sharks and well remember my very first sighting in Fiji in 1979 - as though it were yesterday. As a professional underwater photo-journalist, I make it my business to know the best locations for whatever I may wish to photograph. Argentina for Killer Whales, Australia (Ningaloo) for the Whale Shark and Yap for Manta Ray - but only at the right time of year! If I were ever to consider photographing the Great White, I would probably head for either South Africa or Australia. Prior to reading this book, I would never have considered anywhere within the Mediterranean Sea.

When writing my third book in the mid-1990s about diving in Malta, I was told Great Whites were known to be breeding off one of the country's remote islands called Filfla. The island is unoccupied and some distance offshore. Consequently, nobody bothers going the extra distance to dive there. Nevertheless, the rumours were rife - although there were far more people who dismissed the suggestion as nonsense. Over time, I formed the opinion there were no Great Whites in the Mediterranean - except, perhaps, for the occasional rogue visitor.

Quite clearly I was very wrong.

With four pages of impressive acknowledgements (all in small print), it is easy to appreciate how this really is a comprehensive study of the subject of the presence of the Great White Shark in the Mediterranean Sea. The co-authors commence with a study of the creature itself and, by so doing, skilfully set the scene for both the subject itself and what is to follow. Further chapters are then devoted to; Records from the Mediterranean (with known sightings listed by country), Summary Tables and An Analysis of the Presence of the Great White in the Mediterranean. In short, we have a thorough work laid out as the reader would hope with all facts and figures clearly provided.

The selection of black and white images found spaced throughout the book are quite fascinating. In addition to early engravings and ancient artwork there are also several pictures of jaws of various sizes from different museums - with details of when and where they originated (as early as 1640 and 1707 in some instances!). Far more compelling, however, are the 60 photographs of this creature (mostly dead) from the entire length and breadth of the Mediterranean dating from as early as 1822 right through to 2011. More than anything else, these images clearly show this particular shark is found throughout this particular sea (north, south, east and west) and is not just an occasional visitor. Such evidence is compelling.

With plans to rewrite my underwater guide to Malta well advanced, perhaps I don't have to go to South Africa after all!!!

Complete and Thorough

The authors provide a careful and complete review of all recorded great white shark sightings in the Mediterranean Sea. The writing is not sprightly, but the text is clear and written with scientific dispassion. There is a great deal of information for the interested layman. For example, the largest uncontested size (the shark is preserved in a museum) for the great white is a little over nineteen feet. Nevertheless, based on reliable sightings, the authors believe the animal's maximum length is at least twenty-two feet. This book is an excellent choice for anyone with a strong interest in the subject.

At Last, the truth about Med Whites!!!

So many years of anticipation of a book of this kind. And there it is.
This work is amazing, it shows the truth about Great Whites in Med (although there are more speciments from Greek waters...)and the author has done an amazing job for such a difficult tusk.
The book is serious and honest to the reader with many photos of our beloved creature.

For the real Squalo lovers out there and the Mediterranean residents like me, it is a pleasant surprise!!!
I hope more people in the future to take action for this Shark to be protected. This book is a motivation for this nevertheless!

Fantastic

From the Publishers of Jeff Smith's Bone Volume 7: Ghost Circles comes a new series from one of the authors of the The Spiderwick Chronicles (Boxed Set): The Field Guide; The Seeing Stone; Lucinda's Secret; The Ironwood Tree; The Wrath of Mulgrath. The series called Kin debuts this fall with The Good Neighbors. This is a fantastic graphic novel. The story is strong and compelling, the characters are enticing and draw the readers in, and the artwork is excellent.

This is the beginning of the story of Rue Silver. Rue thought she was a typical student - she had good friends, hung out, went to class and broke into abandoned buildings to climb and explore in them. But now her mother has just disappeared, her father has been arrested, suspected of killing her and one of his grad students. However the story is not as direct as that. Because, unbeknownst to her, Rue is a faerie, like her mother. Rue embarks on a quest - a quest to save her father, a quest to find her mother and after discovering her fey roots, a quest to understand herself and her role in the world. For a battle is brewing between the faerie world and our world, and a dark faerie has plans to make mortals live in fear of the good neighbors once again.

This book reads like a cross between Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere: A Novel and Stardust but with a much darker edge than Stardust. Drawn completely in grayscale, it has an otherworldly feel yet strangely familiar. Black's story draws you in and compels you to read on and Naifeh's images powerfully complement the words. The only drawback is that the book leaves you hanging and desperate to find out what happens next, and yet I cannot find a release date for book two anywhere. So once you are hooked you might have to wait a while for the next installment. But even with that the book is more than worth the effort.

welcome to the neighborhood

a friend gave us this book...
dear lovers of faerie lore,
... and we didn't realize that it was going to be a graphic novel. We were expecting something like Black's novels Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale, or Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie, or Ironside: A Modern Faery's Tale. About 15 years ago we had stopped reading graphic novels. Not intentionally, we had just bought a number but we never read them. We don't know why, we just stopped. So getting a graphic novel made us a bit hesitant. We were, however, pleasantly surprised. It is a good story about Rue Silver who begins seeing the Faerie all around her (we won't tell you the rest, you can get that from other reviews or better yet read the story yours'elf) and the art by Ted Naifeh is great. The only reason we're giving it four stars instead of five is because it is essentially just a rehashing of old lore, a well done rehash mind you, but there is nothing original here. Black doesn't innovate as far as we can see and we'd love to have her do so (perhaps in the future). Still, it was a lot of fun and we plan to get the next book in the series as well. Suddenly, just as abruptly as we gave it up, we're reading graphic novels again.

I have read all of Holly Black's work and it came as no suprise to me that I loved The Good Neighbrs. I was concerned that I would not enjoy a graphic novel as much as her other stories, but I loved it. I can not wait for the second one to come out!

About the Author

April Yamasaki is lead pastor of Emmanuel Mennonite Church in Abbotsford, British Columbia. She has published numerous articles and several books, including Remember Lot's Wife and Other Unnamed Women of the Bible (FaithQuest) and Making Disciples: A Manual for Baptism and Church Membership (Faith & Life Press). She has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of British Columbia, a master s degree in Christian Studies from Regent College, Vancouver, BC, and enjoyed seminary life along with her husband at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana, and Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia.

April has taught college-level courses in Bible and English, adult enrichment courses on prayer and journaling, and seminars and retreats on Christian living.

A third-generation Canadian of Chinese descent, she was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. April lives in Abbotsford with her husband, Gary, who teaches biblical studies at Columbia Bible College.

Spiritual Discipline workshop in a book

I've read and loved both Revolution of Character (the Why? for practicing the spiritual disciplines) and Celebration of Discipline (the Definition and How? of spiritual disciplines). A challenge new books on the same topic have is they will always be compared with these two "classics".

What I appreciated about Sacred Pauses, is I felt like someone could host a spiritual disciplines retreat for a group of people using the book as the source material or have a solo retreat. It was sort of the "exercises" book to compliment the other two classics.

Yes, the areas covered in this book don't exactly match the spiritual disciplines of either other book, but there are some key areas that let this book stand on it's own. Chapters such as Making Music or Living Simply, are great additions the others won't have, but chapters that drive a person to be challenged in these other relevant areas.

I come from a denomination where women pastors aren't considered biblical. So when I first started reading I had to really put that bias aside and read the book for what it is. I appreciated that even though Ms. Yamasaki shared stories in reference to her current status as an ordained pastor, I never felt like it was flaunted. She also did NOT put a personal story into every chapter or have to market any of her other books, like many self-promoting authors do. She kept the content to the topic and let the reader get the point from there. Thank you.

At one point I felt like the chapter on Slowing Down started of so-so because its a topic I think we all know we need to do, but don't make the time to do it. Since I had mentally resigned to not learn from the chapter, it felt like it kept going on and on. I almost skipped ahead, but then the author brought up some interesting suggestions and concepts later in that section that made me glad I stuck with it.

OVERALL: This was a good read. There are practical examples of how to incorporate the disciplines into your life and succinct stories/points of why we should. The Foster book and the Willard book aren't for everyone. This is written for the common man and is easy to digest and hopefully grow from.

Practical and accessible spiritual practices

I purchased this book because of my personal interest in spiritual practices, and found it very helpful and practical. What I found most refreshing about this book was that none of these spiritual practices are particularly difficult, and some of them are things I am doing already in my daily life (getting outside, making music, valuing relationships, etc). It was helpful to see practices that I am doing already (and not necessarily for spiritual reason) as part of spiritual practice and my spirituality was eye-opening for me.

The first chapter focuses on creating space, and describes an item that she keeps on her desk to regularly remind her to pause. I have added a similar element to my busy office workspace and have found it a helpful reminder to take a deep breath, say a prayer, and then move onto my tasks with new perspective. And almost without realizing it, I just had a sacred pause.

Extremely Practical and Intuitive

I agree that the "cookbook" part of the title is a bit of a misnomer. However, it does include very helpful scripts which take advantage of ArcGIS 10 features.

What I find most useful is the fact that the organization of the book takes a building block approach which is helpful for someone who may need to get started, and equally so for someone who would like to simply pinpoint and extract what they want and need.

Here are some of the useful features:

* automated map production and printing: can automate the production of map production and printing (including exporting PDFs), which is helpful when creating a set of maps or map files.

* quickly using geoprocessing tools: this is a quick way to increase functionality and power without having to do everything separately; application-level environment settings are utilized quite helpfully as well.

* creating custom tools: the example shows how to filter the data for North American wildfires -- it's a useful example; I think it might be even more helpful to list some of the common sources of data and practice importing them and working with them by developing additional custom tools.

* working with attribute and spatial queries: I think it would have been good to go into a bit more detail about how / why syntax decisions are made, and to discuss the logic, the flow, and the structure; after all, mind and the mental processes are where clean code begins and ends. That said, the section discusses how Python interprets the queries and how / when it matters where a string is placed. The examples are clear, but I always need lots of examples, so I would have welcomed even more examples, but that would perhaps confuse some users, so I concluded that the book hit the right balance.

* for the more adventurous, the book includes how to use the add-in wizard. I have always been a bit leery of add-ins, believing (perhaps superstitiously) that they will create conflicts, and unleash a small troop of gremlins. This chapter shows how / where to place an add-in in a folder that is easily discoverable by ArcGIS Desktop. This is probably the key to having the thing work, and it solves a small mystery of why add-ins sometimes do not work.

In sum, I'd like to say that I find the book to be very clear, well-organized, and helpful. It's likely to have a nice, long shelf life as well.

Extremely basic

This book is an extremely basic introduction to the ArcGIS 10.1 ArcPy module, with a few minor additions whose link to ArcGIS (or to GIS at all) is tenuous (sending emails? Really? And the first chapter is a generic intro to python, better covered in dozens of other dedicated resources). The "recipes" are almost all single ArcPy methods demonstrated; those seeking interesting problems and novel solutions (like the aging, but excellent "Python Cookbook") will be sorely disappointed. No real-world problems are discussed - the output from many (most?) recipes is print statements, hardly useful for much more than toy problems.

On the plus side, the examples are clearer and more consistent in style than many of ESRI's own, particularly with the consistent use of the "with" statement that leads to much clearer and easier to debug code. But the chosen book structure makes several sections highly repetitive - a method is demostrated in one recipe, and then the next virtually repeats the entire thing to add an SQL query.

There's also some questionable advice, like explicitly telling readers to issue "import arcpy" even in the ArcMap python console "as a good habit"; perhaps it would be good to understand the context in which you're issuing commands? The dumb insistance on this does allow the author to pad out each and every example though, because he includes it even when it's entirely un-needed. And this is not the only use of unnecessary/pointless import statements - many recipes import the "os" module and then never use it, which is hardly good style (though to be fair, ESRI documentation and training teaches similar crappy habits).

If you're looking for interesting problems with practical solutions and a deep discussion of alternatives (like the "Python Cookbook") you'll be very disappointed. If this is a cookbook, it's of the "cheese on toast" variety. Only worth it for the absolute beginner - even as someone who'd never used 10.1 before, though who has a reasonable amount of experience with python and previous ArcGIS versions, I learned more from 5 minutes with the help files. Money wasted.

Errata galore and very basic

If you're an ArcGIS user looking to expand your skillset, you'll probably end up purchasing this book because there are not many other options out there. As someone new to Python but not new to programming, I was sorely disappointed with this book. If you are new to Python, do not start with this book, but with one of the O'Reilly (like Python Cookbook) versions. It will explain much more about the structure of Python, which is sorely missing in this intro book. The author sets you off on examples without explaining many of the fundamental basics. Python is highly sensitive to indents. Unfortunately, that is glossed over, which provided me a lot of difficulty in writing my independent Python code until I used another intro book.

Also extremely unfortunately, almost every example in this book has at least one errata, frequently in the indents. I found this quite frustrating and detrimental to my learning - I ended up spending a lot of time fiddling the the examples to get them to work, then trying to remember which change actually fixed the code. It didn't cover things like importing csv or XML data with headers, which is the majority of the data I see. It's a lot to expect that a novice Python programmer would figure out the correct code to import one line as the header, then the rest of the text as data. (thank you, Stack Overflow)

I also wish it had an appendix list of all the items that arcpy could call. That would've made it very useful, because I haven't found a resource like that, and usually end up doing a lot of hunting around in help and other user programs to find the element name that I need.

Most helpful was the section on layout design, assuming you want to publish to a png or pdf (or other image file). There is no instruction about how to generate mapbooks, georeferenced PDFs, or any sort of active layer that can easily be imported into an on-line system. Downloading data from a FTP site was also interesting, though you'd have to have a good sense of what was already contained in the data file before it would be a process that would be automated via Python.

John P. Doran

John P. Doran is a technical game designer who has been creating games for over 10 years. He has worked on an assortment of games in teams from just himself to over 70 in-student, mod, indie, and professional projects.

He previously worked at LucasArts on Star Wars: 1313 as a Game Design Intern. He was the only junior designer in a team of seniors. He later graduated from DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, WA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Game Design.

John is currently a Software Engineer at DigiPen's Singapore campus, where he tutors students and assists them with difficulties in Computer Science concepts, programming, linear algebra, game design, and advanced usage of UDK, Flash, and Unity in a development environment.

This is his second book; previously he was coauthor for the book UDK iOS Game Development Beginner's Guide, Packt Publishing.

So so

This Beginner Level book is almost where it needs to be. If you are completely new to the UDK, you will not learn fundamental navigation.

The book does encourage lateral thinking. It goes beyond straight forward tutorials and prompts users and readers to think about their work in a different light.

It's philosophy is easy to apply or modify, so it encourages understanding and insight. The Tips and Tricks and Important Notes are very insightful.

It is fairly Design oriented, but essential for artists, in my opinion. From an artist's perspective, it allows them to understand Kismet scripting and jump in on their own and start building games, demos, an interactive maps, mini games, vignettes, and so on. It's gratifying in that it offers fast access to complex issues and simplifies them beautifully. By doing so, users are able to gain experience quickly.

The book focuses on project-based Kismet scripting and mechanics to build simple but fun games and elements. The books final Chapter is the icing on the cake. Understanding Unreal Script is extremely useful, and I encourage all readers to drill down through the book and reward themselves with Project 8. You'll be glad you did and feel like you just accomplished a cohesive primer. You'll feel empowered, which, I believe, is the basis for books like this. As stated in 'Who this book is for', it really is development at an accelerated place, which in turn equates to experience at an accelerated pace.

However, it is a bit pricey for it's size and depth of content when compared to the vast knowledge one can easily find on the UDK support sites. I also didn't like the 'Rocket Ship / Mission" format of the chapter titles. I felt it distracting, but younger readers may not be bothered by it.

My recommendation is to purchase the Kindle Edition, follow along, and use the various support sites for greater depth and understanding. I also strongly think that the E-book should be free for anyone who purchases the paper bound copy. Why pay twice?

A good start that will need some supplementary content

SUMMARY:
Pickup this book if you are fairly new, but not entirely new to Unreal Development Kit (UDK). You should already know how to move around UDK as it doesn't cover the very basics. There are numerous YouTube videos that can fill that in for you if this is your first time. This book contains very ridged step by step instructions you can follow to duplicate the projects in the book, but be ready to supplement your learning with internet tutorials and the UDK Wiki as the why's are not explained, only the how's. However, this book does a good job of using non-FPS game types to teach you some of the things UDK is capable of and if you follow the projects and then start iterating the end result yourself with the help of web content you can learn a lot with this book as the stepping stone. Read on for more specific details:

THE LONG VERSION:
WHO I AM:
I'm a recent graduate from The Art Institute of Seattle. I found it cool that the author is a graduate of DigiPen (The other main gaming school in the area). Because of this, I have worked on the art side of UDK, but haven't branched out to much into other aspects. The Creating a Custom HUD and Creating Environments chapters I have more experience then what's covered, the rest was relatively new. THE UNAVOIDABLE PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK:
UDK is updated regularly (monthly at times, less recently probably due to Unreal4), so procedures in the book are slightly out of date. The book used UDK February 2012 and I downloaded the current latest version of February 2013. Because of this there are slight variations such as instructions to uncheck options that are already not checked, and things like the collision in chapters 2 and 3 never worked for me, but work fine in the project files provided with the book. I think the reasons for these variants are changes in the "default" values between the two versions. Also some of the Kismet menus have changed and some of the options are in slightly different places then the book says they will be, but aside from the collision problem (that I'm sure I could solve with time), everything else was pretty easy to find what the book was talking about even if it didn't give the exact steps.

CONS:
I was able to find a type-o in one of the kismet steps in chapter 2 or 3, but it was a small one and the images had the correct function that needed to be there, so that was easy to spot. There was also a type-o in the UnrealScript in the last chapter that was harder to figure out why the code wasn't compiling, but with some persistence I was able to find and fix it.
There was also a point on page 58 that told you to go up a few pages and repeat steps that broke up the flow. It would have been nicer to have the steps just repeat, but this is a preference call possibly.
That brings me to my only big complaint about the book: This book will require you to do your own research and supplemental learning. Things like WHY you select a specific Game Type and what each of them is used for are not covered. Without telling you why you do these things there will be no "mastering," but if you are fairly new to UDK and want to become more well rounded, this could help. The writer has obviously figured out what is needed, but no reasoning is explained in the text, it's simply a step by step process to follow. This gets you the exact same results as are listed in the book without any idea why you get them, or how to change options if you want something slightly different.

PROS:
There is a lack of good UDK books on the market, so it's nice to see this book and the author's previous iOS book (that I have not read). This one is a step by step hand holding experience that will get you familiar with UDK and its various screens and what can be done with it. If you are looking for something to give you direction as you try to learn UDK this book will do that. Go through the book with a web browser open to answer the numerous questions that will come up as you read and you can come out with some real knowledge of UDK. It is very refreshing that there are not First-Person-Shooter projects here as many people wrongly thing that's all UDK can really do. My suggestion would be to look at the projects covered in the book and if they are the kind of thing that excites you, pick it up. If you get the e-book the project files can all be downloaded so you can compare your work with the author's finished projects. As long as you don't mind supplementing with web searches and video tutorials this will get you started in UDK.

DISCLAIMER:
Lastly just for full disclosure I did receive a free evaluation copy of the ebook for this review, but I did my best not to allow that to sway my decision. I started reading with excitement hoping to learn a lot and found myself going though step by step instructions like putting together IKEA furniture instead. The book did however bring me to sections of UDK I haven't used before and probably wouldn't have touched for a while without. It also broke the myth that it is hard to create something other than an FPS game with UDK. Due to time constraints (review was due today) I only got through 6 of the 8 chapters. I skipped 6 & 7, because I was excited to read about UnrealScript. If the last two chapters change my views on the book I will come back and amend this review. Book Review: Mastering UDK Game Development

Mastering UDK Game Development by John P. Doran, published in March 2013 by Packt Publishing, features eight chapters focusing on presenting intermediate to advanced gameplay elements achievable using Epic Games' Unreal Development Kit (UDK). For such a small book (273 pages) the scope the book tries to achieve is pretty large. Does 'Mastering UDK Game Development' live up to the scope it promises?

In each of the 8 chapters the reader is introduced to and works through one demo project; in most cases the projects are standalone, allowing you to start at Chapter 1 or Chapter 4, etc. The demos contained in the book are interesting and upon finishing should spark your inner game developer, making them think 'where can I go from here?' Here is a breakdown of the chapters and their project:

- Chapter 1: Advanced Kismet - Creating a Third-person Platformer - Pretty obvious, the chapter project creates a 2.5D platformer in the same style as Shadow Complex however creates this gameplay style without any programming necessary

- Chapter 2: Terror in Deep Space - Chapter project is creating an on-rails space shooter in the same style as Starfox including importing content (static meshes and textures) and creating materials

- Chapter 3: Terror in Deep Space 2: Even Deeper - Based on Chapter 2, builds on that project by implementing more gameplay elements like multiple enemies, health, and game over

- Chapter 4: Creating a Custom HUD - Again pretty obvious, chapter project focuses on creating a custom user interface by using Adobe Flash ActionScript 3.0

- Chapter 5: Creating Environments - Chapter project focuses on level editing; probably the weakest chapter within considering the number of other volumes already dedicated to this subject

- Chapter 6: Dynamic Loot - Chapter project develops the ability to bring an object into the game (in this case a torch) and allow the user to pick up, use, and drop the object

- Chapter 7: Managing Loot - Based on Chapter 4 and Chapter 6, chapter project develops a user inventory with Adobe Flash to manage items the player picks up

- Chapter 8: UnrealScript: A Primer - The first dedicated programming chapter teaches how to display the standard 'Hello World' message in UnrealScript as well as script a flashing light for use in the space shooter project from Chapter 2 & 3

If you browse that list of chapters and what you'll be building and aren't somewhat excited then this book and review are not for you. But, for everyone else, you should notice that halfway through the book (finishing Chapter 4; about 147 pages in) you'll have 2 fully functioning game prototypes and several working gameplay heads-up display (HUD/interface) elements. That is quite extraordinary for such a condensed book to not only work through interesting examples, but practical examples. At the end of nearly every chapter you'll be left considering what else you can do with what was shown. Most likely, you'll run off and start working on your own stuff based around what the book taught (which is excellent!).

Where 'Mastering UDK' excels in content it falters in its clarity, a big problem considering this is a book. There are instances where the author simply omits steps, only to refer to those missed objects a few steps later. For example, in the first chapter you are instructed to build two platforms but as far as I can tell, the closest the book gets to actually telling you to create a second platform is: 'Copy and paste the sequence' (after having created a sequence to create a moving a platform). But copying and pasting the sequence in Kismet (UDK's visual scripting system) ties the new sequence to the original platform that should be doing something else. In another section, you're instructed to 'Right-click inside the Group List (the dark-gray column below all the tabs with text and to the left of the timeline).' As the old adage goes, 'A picture is worth a thousand words', and without pictures some of the explanations in 'Mastering UDK' just become confusing and unintentionally misleading.

Another area the book lacks in is a focus on teaching the reader. For the most part 'Mastering UDK' is written to tell you how to achieve a specific goal in the form of a demo and that is it. There is no why or even how, there are just steps to follow. One or two lines here and there explain the general overview of what is trying to be accomplished but they are being provided to keep you on track, not to teach you. Without teaching, the majority of the book ends up as a long set of tutorials filled with 'Click here' or 'Do this'.

But I should be clear: 'Mastering UDK Game Development' is written for developers that are familiar with some aspect of the Unreal editor and the book shouldn't be criticized heavily for that, it should be praised. The book is probably a tutorial format rather than a how-to format because it already assumes you have your own processed and knowledge about how to work with UDK. I own other volumes on editing in Unreal and UDK they all are a 'start here' volume intended for beginners and training them up to an immediate state. The fact that 'Mastering UDK' is not for beginners is what makes its content so effective and the volume so unique; it is not a reference for starting from the beginning, it is a set of tools to add to an already established foundation. The focus of the book is a double-edged sword though because if you aren't interested in using any of the demos in a project then it really isn't worth owning, especially due to a moderately high price of $44.99 (US) for 273 pages. With that said, I personally found the content very interesting and worth the purchase price simply because I wouldn't otherwise know how to create a custom user interface (Chapter 4) or how to build a Starfox-style shooter (Chapter 2, Chapter 3).

In the end, 'Mastering UDK Game Development' is a solid reference for how to accomplish very specific and common gameplay elements in UDK. While it falters with some clarity and generally tends show rather than teach, the content within could be extremely useful to many intermediate to advanced developers. Given the $44.99 (US) price, my recommendation is to go to [...] and look over the Table of Contents and 'What you will learn from this book' sections which both provide a solid overview of the content within. If you are interested in any of the items listed there, pick up a copy.

Great Halloween version of an old favorite!

This is a funny and easy-to-read picture book with hilarious illustrations, perfect for the 3-6 year-old in your life. My son and I read this together at least 10 times, and he still remembers it fondly. The one to two sentences per page read with an easy cadence that makes the book flow, very like the original Old Lady story. Great Halloween reading!
