About the Author

Lara Alcock is Senior Lecturer in the Mathematics Education Centre at Loughborough University, UK. An accomplished undergraduate and graduate mathematician at Warwick, her doctorate was in mathematics education before holding various academic posts including Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education and Mathematics at Rutgers University, New Jersey. Her research focuses on the challenges students encounter as they make the transition from calculation-based to proof-based mathematics. She was awarded the 2012 MAA Seldon Prize for Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education. She has been awarded National Teaching Fellows of 2015 by The Higher Education Academy.

I liked it very much

I liked it very much! She focuses on the root of the difficulties to major in mathematics. This book is really suitable for students who can see or at least be warned about the notably difference between high school and university; so he or she can find tips and good advices to help them to overcome misconceptions and erratic procedures learned during former studies. For teachers it is also suitable because they can feel somehow what skills students still might need, and comprehend why they show failures on test or troubles acquiring abstract concepts; this way teachers can adapt or improve their plans whether they can in order to give their students a good initiation.

How to Think as a Non-Mathematics Major

I'm not a mathematics major nor a mathematician, but this book has made me think more deliberately as a game designer, artist and programmer. I don't know if that was the intention of the book or not, but I certainly appreciate it. I will say, you probably need to remember a small bit of intro calculus for some of the examples to make sense. It reminds me a little bit of Nicolaide's "The Natural Way to Draw" in that it works on your (metaphorical) eyes more than it works on your hands. Or, now that I think about it Papert's discussion of the gears of his childhood in the introduction to "Mindstorms".

Excellent Guidelines for Any Math Major

I found the book not only informative, but insightful. The author obviously knows her stuff! For me, Mathematics was my minor as an undergrad. But the information is still just as relevant. The book differentiates between a students way of thinking for "lower level" mathematics, and "higher level" abstract and analysis courses. It makes perfect sense! (At least it did to me.) Included are many tips and techniques that I personally think should be taught as a standard "gateway" course for any higher level math classes.

I highly recommend this for anyone either taking, or considering to take, a 300 level or above college math course!

A definite read for the Preventive Medicine Board Exam

Covers a broad array of topics that are on the ABPM General Preventive Medicine Board exam as well as the common core exam for other ABPM specialties. However, I would supplement this book with Mayo Preventive Medicine Board Review book. While most chapters are fairly comprehensive, a few such as those on Occupational Medicine and Environmental Medicine are very brief, and not reach the full depth that I would have expected (hence the 4 star over 5 star).

Thin resource good for teachers who know zilch about the Internet

If you know pretty much nothing about the Internet you should consider getting this book. Otherwise, I recommend "pass." Basically, this is just a thin annotated compilation of lots of internet resources, many of which should already be familiar to both instructors AND gifted students. Additionally, due to the limited scope of the listings, there are huge numbers of sites which would be of value to gifted students that are NOT included. Finally, the availability of resources on the internet is dynamic and constantly changing. This book is guaranteed to be out of date within a year or two. Nonetheless, if you truly are totally ignorant regarding specific internet resources, this would be a useful acquisition (for the next couple of years).

Wonderful guide to the web

This is a wonderful guide to the web especially for teachers of gifted students. The topical organization of the book makes it easy for teachers to locate available resources in various areas including national organizations, student programs, lesson planning, independent study projects, and online classes. Resources for children of all ages are included. Each resource is presented along with a brief annotation highlighting that resource's materials and possibilities for classroom use. Special sections are included containing web resources pertaining to each major academic content area, foreign language, fine arts and even service learning opportunities. This is a must-have resource for teachers seeking to provide more computer-based learning for students or for teachers who want to have more resources available to them when planning curriculum and enrichment activities.

This comprehensive social history unfolds across four volumes, each of which can be appreciated on its own.

In Volume 3, Naficy assesses the profound effects of the Islamic Revolution on Iran's cinema and film industry. Throughout the book, he uses the term Islamicate, rather than Islamic, to indicate that the values of the postrevolutionary state, culture, and cinema were informed not only by Islam but also by Persian traditions. Naficy examines documentary films made to record events prior to, during, and in the immediate aftermath of the revolution. He describes how certain institutions and individuals, including prerevolutionary cinema and filmmakers, were associated with the Pahlavi regime, the West, and modernity and therefore perceived as corrupt and immoral. Many of the nation's moviehouses were burned down. Prerevolutionary films were subject to strict review and often banned, to be replaced with films commensurate with Islamicate values. Filmmakers and entertainers were thrown out of the industry, exiled, imprisoned, and even executed. Yet, out of this revolutionary turmoil, an extraordinary Islamicate cinema and film culture emerged. Naficy traces its development and explains how Iran's long war with Iraq, the gendered segregation of space, and the imposition of the veil on women encouraged certain ideological and aesthetic trends in film and related media. Finally, he discusses the structural, administrative, and regulatory measures that helped to institutionalize the new evolving cinema.

About the Author
Alice Bellagamba is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology and African Studies at the University of Milan, Bicocca. She is the author of Ethnographie, histoire et colonialism en Gambie (2002), L'Africa e la stregoneria: Saggio di antropologia storica (2008) and co-editor of Beside the State: Emergent Powers in Contemporary Africa (with Georg Klute, 2008). She has extensive fieldwork experience in the Senegambia and since 2000 she has directed MEBAO, a network of Italian and African scholars working on historical memory and heritage in West Africa. In 2004-5, she was Alexander Humboldt Fellow at the University of Bayreuth and in 2011-12 a EURIAS Senior Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies of Berlin.

Sandra E. Greene is a Professor of African History at Cornell University. She has served as President and Vice-President of the African Studies Association. Greene has written three books: West African Narratives of Slavery: Texts from Late Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Ghana (2011); Sacred Sites and the Colonial Encounter: A History of Meaning and Memory in Ghana (2002), which was a finalist for the 2003 Herskovits Award; and Gender, Ethnicity and Social Change on the Upper Slave Coast: A History of the Anlo-Ewe (1996), which earned an Honorable Mention from the 1997 Herskovits Award Committee.

Martin A. Klein is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. Klein has taught African history for 34 years. He has served as President of both the African Studies Association (ASA) and the Canadian Association of African Studies. He has written or edited several books, including Historical Dictionary of Slavery and Abolition (2002); Slavery and Colonial Rule in Africa (Cambridge University Press, 1998), edited with Suzanne Miers; Breaking the Chains: Slavery, Bondage, and Emancipation in Modern Africa and Asia (1993); and Women and Slavery in Africa (1983), edited with Claire C. Robertson. His book Slavery and Colonial Rule in French West Africa earned an Honorable Mention from the Herskovits Award Committee. In 2001, Klein was awarded the ASA's Distinguished Africanist Award. He also edits Cambridge University Press's New Perspectives in African History series.

About the Author
Zhu Han is an Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Houston, Texas. He received an NSF CAREER award in 2010 and the IEEE Fred W. Ellersick Prize in 2011. He co-authored papers that won the best paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Communications 2009, the 7th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt09), and the IEEE Wireless Communication and Networking Conference, 2012.

Husheng Li is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Tennessee. He received the Best Paper Award of the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking in 2005 (together with his PhD advisor, Professor H. V. Poor), the Best Demo Award of IEEE Globecom in 2010, and the Best Paper Award at IEEE ICC in 2011.

Wotao Yin is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University. He won an NSF CAREER award in 2008 and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in 2009.

If you read his column--better yet, if you don't read his column--get your hands on a copy of The Book of Bad Songs.

Barry's style is so effortless that you can't resist quoting him. This bit is from his mock-hortatory introduction: "If you keep reading, you're going to have all kinds of bad songs waking up and creeping around inside your brain, refusing to die, just like the corpses in the movie The Night of the Living Dead ..."

Humor is a genre that usually works best when heard rather than read, and Dave Barry's is one wisecracking, sidesplitting example of an [HighBridge] audio book that can make you howl with laughter. The printed book is also a laughfest, but there is no guarantee you will have the same comic delivery as narrator Mike Dodge. Barry, a syndicated newspaper columnist, conducted a survey in which he asked people to name the songs they most despised. He was inundated with more than 10,000 responses. A great book for first-time Dave Barry readers

I'd never read a single Dave Barry book or column until I picked up this small, but ultimately powerful book. As a result, I'm a Dave Barry fan, and what's more, I now know that I am not the only person who thinks that "In the Year 2525" should be considered cruel and unusual punishment.
Dave Barry didn't set out to write this book; it began as a column with reader participation for "Worst Songs." Dave's mailbag was flooded with replies, with people complaining about artists from many styles. Everyone from Neil Diamond to the Doobie Brothers gets it in this book...
It's critical to know that if you truly want to appreciate this book, you must have been exposed not just to "light rock," but also to 50s teenage tragedy songs, classic rock station fodder (look out Iron Butterfly), and the triad of Anka-Diamond-Manilow. If you can actually SING part of the songs in the book, it'll add to the laugh factor by at least 150%. I couldn't agree more when Dave points out the utter silliness of the lyric: "Song she sang to me, Song she brang to me." (Thank you, Neil Diamond) I heard this playing while waiting for a table at a local restaurant, and people must've thought I'd hit my head because I broke out in hysterics when I heard it play over the speakers...
Dave rips on everybody, so I don't recommend it if your loyalty to a group or singer is incredibly strong. Bear in mind that this isn't just Dave; it's leagues of hassled souls who will just go nuts if they even hear one note of "Muskrat Love."
It's inexpensive, easy to carry, and hilarious. This book will make you want to try his other titles, and you won't be sorry when you do! Like another reviewer said, who needs an ab machine when you've got this book??

Someone left the cake out in the rain...

Back in 1992, Dave Barry, in one of his syndicated newspaper columns, wondered why radio doesn't play more "good songs," and mentioned some of the songs he doesn't like, saying (among other things) that he wouldn't mind if radio stopped playing ballads by Neil Diamond. This column generated a heated response, with some readers defending Neil Diamond and some agreeing with Dave. Some readers also wrote to voice their opinions on artists and songs THEY didn't like. Realizing he'd struck a nerve, Dave announced the "Bad Song Survey," asking readers to write in and tell him which songs they really, REALLY hate. The response to this survey was so overwhelming, Dave compiled the top vote-getters as the achingly-funny "Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs". I haven't laughed so hard while reading a book in a VERY long time! In most cases, the comments by Dave, and numerous survey voters, are right on target.
In addition to the expected, much-maligned vote-getters like "MacArthur Park," "Muskrat Love," "Feelings" and "I Write The Songs," this book takes on a diverse group of songs which includes "American Pie," "I'm Too Sexy," "In The Year 2525," "Achy, Breaky Heart," "I've Never Been To Me," "The Candy Man," "Dreams of The Everyday Housewife" (This song was a big vote-getter in a section called "Songs Women Really Hate"), and many more.
No artist is impervious to this book's sword, not even Elvis ("Do The Clam") or The Beatles (the four-hour, er, minute "na-na-na-na" section of "Hey Jude".) Since so many songs are mentioned in this book, it's almost inevitable that a song or two which you happen to like, will be included here. For example, I like America's "A Horse With No Name," but even I have to admit that the lyrics quoted by Dave are pretty lame (I'd have included "Ventura Highway" instead, since it features the TRULY lame line about "Alligator lizards in the air".)
I agree with other reviewers who have said that this book is too short. Many songs that richly deserve to be included here (Cher's "Half-Breed" immediately comes to mind), are absent. Perhaps Dave could give us a sequel (or two.)

DON'T Buy The Audio Version!

Now I know how much of comedy is TIMING. This tape was HORRIBLE! What might have been funny if read by Dave Barry, or even if I read it myself (if I'd gotten the book), was root-canal-like painful read by Mike Dodge, whose delivery reminds me of every safety training video I've ever heard.
The producers must have known how un-funny his delivery made the material, as they even added "pa-da" drum staccatos to let us know when a joke was being made. If you love Dave Barry, DON'T buy this tape - it'll kill you to hear the material so butchered.
