Avengers: The Initiative, version 2.0

Avengers Academy: Permanent Record collects issues #1-6 of Avengers Academy, originally published in 2010, as well as a very short piece from Enter the Heroic Age. The hardcover graphic novel is well-produced with medium-gloss paper, finished boards (in bronze), and a solid spine. Extras include a number of variant covers, a section with character notes and art, and a brief interview with writer Christos Gage.

Story-wise, Permanent Record tells of the formation and early training of Avengers Academy, a group of super-powered teens who were subject to the machinations of Norman Osborne during Dark Reign. Of the six characters who make up the team, only one has appeared previously (Reptil in Avengers: The Initiative), but Gage supplies all of them with interesting back stories that are slowly revealed as the series progresses. Henry Pym, Tigra, Justice, a post-Penance Speedball, and a "Heroic Age" Quicksilver also appear regularly as the Academy's teachers. If the set-up sounds similar to that of Avengers: The Initiative, that is because this is essentially the same tale, only stripped of the New Warriors back story and set in a politically saner Marvel Universe. For all its lack of originality, however, it is hard to fault Gage for re-using a template that worked so well the first time around--and that seems to be working here as well. Permanent Record offers an addictive mix of teenage insecurity, hazy morals, lies and double-crossing, and sustained character studies. Although it lacks the grandeur of other Heroic Age books, it looks well-poised to be (like its predecessor, Avengers: The Initiative was) the most solid of Marvel's second-string, on-going series. As for the art, Mike McKone (and, on issue #5, Jorge Molina) supply competent if unremarkable pencils.

If you enjoyed Avengers: The Initiative, you'll almost certainly enjoy Avengers Academy as well. But newer readers (especially teenagers) will also enjoy this as well. Readers with a thing for spectacular heroes and/or gigantic battle sequences, however, are better off looking elsewhere.

A really good debut of a new Avengers squad!!

Many times when new characters are introduced in comics you either get them rammed down your thoughts with their gimmicks, clichés, etc. or you're given mystery on top of mystery just for the sake of mystery. The newbies here are given enough background and mystery combined that it's a great first step. Add that to the ongoing drama of Hank Pym, Quicksilver, & Speedball and you have a really good debut. The art by Mike McKone and Jorge Molina is really good and the characters are identifiable and the action scenes dynamic. Overall, really good stuff!

Remember back in the 1980s when the X-men were beginning to really rise in popularity and Marvel turned out a new book called "The New Mutants"? Well, meet the new Avengers. They're just as interesting, if not more, than the new mutants. A very well written book by author Christos Gage and with a realistic art style that still leaves a lot to the imagination by Mike McKone the book smartly depicts teen youth with superpowers and who are suspicious of their teachers (and, we find, have every right to be). Their teachers are various and sundry Avengers, foremost Hank Pym, Justice, and Speedball. Focusing on individual characters per issue/ chapter while letting the larger narrative arc unfold feels perfectly natural here and the young Avengers in training are all taken seriously and given flaws, empathetic backstorys, and future intentions and dreams/ desires. They also are allowed to play off of each other naturally, sometimes snarkily and sometimes romantically and sometimes belligerentlly. I like these new/ young characters and cared about them. The best known of them is Reptil as he has been in some other Marvel series, including the "Marvel Superhero Squad" cartoon on TV. But he's not played for laughs here. Finesse, someone who will remind people of that clever cool character Taskmaster, is another standout and and is at the heart of a lot of intrigue. Hazmat is an untapped powerhouse while Mettle is introduced as the resident strongman. And there's more. All of the characters have plenty of room to grow and grow they will. I look forward to future installments of this series and I might just check out more work that Gage has written. Avengers Academy is young and hip. But it will appeal to the young and the old reader alike. Check it out.

Very catchy and repetitive

What an adorable book! My son is 1 1/2 and loves "there was an old lady" books. They are very sing-songy and keep his attention well. He always laughs when we read "I don't know why she swallowed the shell". The book is repetitive making it easy for him to follow along and say words he knows in the book. I was able to purchase this book gently used from Amazon, which saved us a ton of money! This book is definitely a keeper!

Not quite astonishing, but solid all the same

Writer Warren Ellis (Planetary, Transmetropolitan) and artist Simone Bianchi (Wolverine) tackle the somewhat unenviable task of taking over from award-winning fan-favourites Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) and John Cassaday (Planetary) on Astonishing X-men, something of a flagship X-title for Marvel. And for the most part they succeed, although not without a few missteps, taking the series distinctly in their own direction, and setting a new, darker tone.

Those familiar with Ellis' writing will instantly recognise the wild sci-fi elements and snarky dialogue that are his trademarks, but he manages to find the characters' voices pretty well from the get-go -- seeming to have the most fun with the acid-tongued Emma and the hyper-intelligent Beast. The snappy banter, weird science and alternate reality mumbo-jumbo come thick and fast as the X-men investigate a bizarre murder and follow the ensuing trail of destruction around the world, finally discovering a familiar face at the heart of the mystery.

Bianchi's painted artwork is often beautiful to look at, and his darker palette matches the tone of the story well. However, his figures are occasionally caught in quite awkward poses, or suffer from an almost Hellenistic tendency to over-gesture or over-emote. Fight scenes, too, can be hard to follow, thanks in part to the aforementioned dark colour scheme, but mostly due to Bianchi's framing, which stays close in on the action and leaves little in the way of breathing room. In quieter moments, Bianchi's unconventional framing is eye-catching and inventive, but once the action hots up, things can get a little claustrophobic and confusing.

At the original time of printing there were complaints of the storyline moving too slowly, but the main issue, I think, is in the story's climax, which seems a little rushed and lacking in weight. To illustrate: the main story is supplemented by four short "what if" style tales that focus on alternate realities and what might have happened if things had played out differently, and it is only here that we see the full scale of what the X-men were facing. It's a shame that the same threat wasn't conveyed more strongly in the main story, as there is a bit of a lack of "wow factor" there, despite the explosive finish.

Still, all told, there is plenty of good stuff going on here, and fans of Ellis or the previous Astonishing X-men books should give this one a read.

Good intentions, not the best results

I read the Astonishing X-Men run with much interest. Until now it had good ideas, darn impressive artwork and excellent writing, so if you're a fan of Whedon & Cassaday, you'll be slightly disappointed by this volume.

Ghost Box has an interesting concept behind it (spoiler: parallel universes) and throws in some interesting details about how the X-Men work, like telepathically learning the native language of the foreign country they happen to be in. There are maybe two moments of brilliant dialogue. Plus, it has original panel/page layouts at every step, mostly enjoyable since you don't see them very often - but here the positive aspects end.

The art is, well, let's call it "unrealistic" and leave it at that; by the time you're halfway through the volume, you will have grown tired of seeing everyone's mouths open as if shouting. The concept is tackled only superficially, pretty much like the Dangerous volume, while the "What If" stories present much more interest than the main one. The are contradictions with previous volumes (so at the end of the day, how good is Beast with computers?) as well as previous personality traits (is Armor shy-"I don't know what to do" or extremely cheeky to her teammates? Is Emma really saying "I shall simply..." on every page?!).

So: if you're into the series, by all means do add this to the collection. Just don't expect it to blow your mind, because overall it looks like a good idea gone bad somewhere along the line. I'm giving it the fourth star only for Abigail Brand's appearances, which were well-written, and the "What If" stories.

Surprising quality after Whedon's departure

This book has a surprising bit of quality after the departure of Astonishing X-writer Joss Whedon. The concept of Ghost Boxes (it's a secret) is an intriguing idea. More importantly, writer Warren Ellis manages to expertly work in S.W.O.R.D. (Abigail Brand) and Ororo (Storm). Also, we get some great scenes for Hidako (Armor), the new X-Man. What more can you ask for?

The Ghost Boxes story ends quickly, halfway through the book. This turns out to be a plus, as the latter half of the book is devoted to what could have happened had the X-men not dealt with the problem. It's a cool concept, and I find myself re-reading this book over and over. And that's the best endorsement. Great job, X-team!

I purchased this book in preparation for taking the CNE exam. Please save your money. It's like a little brochure rather than a book! All information contained within this book can be found on the NLN's website for free.

Not worth the printed pages as very little was useful. Internet offers same information. Needed for desk but don't recommend purchasing as expensive for the small amount of content. Nurses should not be required to purchase and make publishers rich, sad but this is big business I don't endorese.

He has earned award nominations from the National Cartoonists Society for his illustration work 11 times. and he's received the NCS awards for Best Greeting Cards in 1995 and 1998 and Best in Magazine Gags in 1999. Rick lives in Connecticut with his wife, Danna, and daughter, Molly.

A very funny comic strip.

The quote on the back cover says it all. Basically, do you remember all those stupid things you did as a kid? Well, me neither. Fortunately, for us Rick Stromoski does. And boy, how well he remembers. Almost ever strip gets at least a chuckle from me, and a couple made me laugh so hard my side hurt. One thing potential buyers may need to know. The family is Catholic and several of the strips have Catholic humor in them. But the good news is that they're generic enough for non-Catholics to enjoy. So spend a few dollars for some very good G-rated laughs.

a wonderful comic find

Soup to Nutz is the best comic strip I've ever read. The book is full of this wonderful comic find. I discovered it on a comics website months ago and have been reading it everyday since. The children are adorable, especially Andrew...the character designs are just so creative and refreshing. Very funny stuff, sometimes laugh out loud funny, sometimes worth a chuckle, the misadventures of the kids are always entertaining.

A strip that is suitable for the whole family and could probably be enjoyed by the adults as well as the kids. I am amazed at how anyone could make such a great comic each and every day. If you're a comic strip fan, or someone who has just started reading comics on a regular basis- this is one of the best out there, and you'll be glad you discovered it.

First class collection of stories that have been a joy to listen to. Neil Plakcy did a great job of finding and presenting some great stories that uniformly held my interest and gave me some memorable scenes. I've thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Peter Z. Grossman is the Clarence Efroymson Professor of Economics at Butler University. He is co-author, with Edward S. Cassedy, of Introduction to Energy (Cambridge University Press, 1999) and co-editor, with D. H. Cole, of The End of a Natural Monopoly: Deregulation and Competition in the Electric Power Industry. His scholarly articles have appeared in journals such as Energy Policy, Economic Inquiry, The Journal of Legal Studies and the Journal of Public Policy. For seven years, Professor Grossman was a regular columnist on economic issues for the Indianapolis Star and he has contributed commentary to many magazines and newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal and The Christian Science Monitor.

Peter Z. Grossman's latest book analyzes the unfolding of U.S. energy policy ca. 1970-2012. In part, U.S. Energy Policy and the Pursuit of Failure is a well-researched narrative history. In telling this story, Grossman enlivens his text with many quotations from the leading actors. These statements do a good job of conveying the mood and the dominant (often deeply confused) thought patterns then as now--a useful historical lesson if ever there was one.

But the book is meant to be much more than a narrative history. Rather, Professor Grossman's aims: (1) to show that throughout this period U.S. energy policy often did more harm than good, (2) to explain why the policy process produced such perverse outcomes, and (3) to sketch recommendations that would lead to better results in the future.

Pursuit of Failure succeeds completely in the first of these three analytic tasks. Professor Grossman shows that, just as Hayek warned, government has repeatedly flunked the informational challenges implied by large-scale central planning of energy. Its track record in forecasting oil and gas prices has been abysmal. And the oil and gas allocation controls of the 1970s were catastrophic. The book also crushingly debunks claims that state-run "Apollo Programs" can transform energy technology.

Professor Grossman is also largely convincing in explaining why so many U.S. energy policies have gone so badly astray. The book notes that public policies that are ostensibly meant to correct market failures are themselves invariably imperfect. Flawed policy measures emerge, as political economists have long argued, because both formal and informal institutions preclude the adoption of better ones.

It is only with respect to the third analytic challenge, prescribing improvements, where I am left wondering if Pursuit of Failure has not fallen somewhat short of the book's otherwise very high standard. While Professor Grossman offers eleven principles for improving energy policy, they can largely be subsumed under a single theme. It is that energy policy needs to become far more modest than it has been. That is, policy should trust more to markets. It should eschew hubristic Apollo Projects. It should choose measurable goals. It should avoid subsidies meant to commercialize technologies, and so forth. I could not agree more. Yet, these principles can be effective only if energy policy makers adopt them. And the latter remain in thrall to the same perverse incentives that Professor Grossman has described. Perhaps, then, we should embrace the goal of a more humble energy policy while (like Professor Grossman himself) expecting that government, absent institutional change, will produce more of the same foolish policies.

In sum, Energy Policy and the Pursuit of Failure astutely applies lessons derived from institutional economics and political economy to current issues of energy policy. Professor Grossman has written a balanced and thoughtful book that will be of value to both the energy policy experts and the general reader.

Superb insight

I heard about this book from a recent National Review article by Robert Bryce titled Pursuing Energy Failure, Again and Again. Given his review, I bought it; despite my disinterests in academic theories that almost always typify economists’ coverage of such issues from “ivory tower” perspectives.

This time, I was rewarded virtually paragraph by paragraph (especially in chapter 2) with insights that were of immediate, practical use in my field of work; which is “energy efficiency” and “clean energy” policy analyses. While these subjects were not directly covered in this book in the same depth as biofuels (for example), they could easily be the perfect poster children for the failures Dr. Grossman so thoroughly describes.

About the Author
Robert J. Trapp received his PhD in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma in 1994. He was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow and then was appointed as a research scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies and the National Severe Storms Laboratory. Part of this appointment was spent at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Trapp joined the faculty at Purdue University in 2003: he is currently Professor and Associated Head of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. He holds the distinction as a University Faculty Scholar, awarded to outstanding faculty members who are on an accelerated path for academic distinction. Trapp has also been recognized as an Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science and has appeared on his departmental teaching honor roll in every semester of his tenure at Purdue. He is an expert on convective storms, their attendant hazards and their two-way interaction with the larger-scale atmosphere.

Denn neben der Ursache und den Symptomen sind die Bedingungen wichtig, unter denen es dem Hund besser oder schlechter geht. Ist der Schnupfen eitrig oder wässrig? Wird er im Warmen oder im Freien besser? Ausgehend von den Symptomen werden die jeweils angezeigten Arzneien vorgestellt. Besonders hilfreich sind die präzisen Angaben zur Dosierung und Potenzierung der Mittel, die mehr Sicherheit bei der Behandlung des vierbeinigen Freundes geben. Die Gliederung erfolgt nach Hundekrankheiten: Augen und Ohren, Atemwege, Herz-Blutkreislauf, Verdauungstrakt, Harnwege und Geschlechtsorgane sowie Bewegungsapparat, Haut und Verhalten. Darum hilft "Homöopathie für Hunde" nicht nur der scheinträchtigen Hündin, sondern auch dem Senior mit Rheuma, dem Rüden mit Mundgeruch, dem fiebernden Welpen und dem plötzlichen Beißer. Hilke Marx-Holena absolvierte eine 15-jährige Ausbildung in klassischer Homöopathie nach Hahnemann sowie eine Tierheilpraktikerschulung.
