Kate earned an M.F.A. degree in fiction from the University of Arizona and is working on her first novel. Photographer Lisa Sachs received an M.F.A. degree in photography from Yale University and has shown her artwork in galleries in New York and Paris. She works as a freelance photographer in Washington, D.D. The sisters-in-law both live in Maryland.

The Cat's Meow - What's Not to Love?

I have to start off by saying that my partner and I are HUGE cat lovers. We share our lives with 6 rescued felines who have found their way into our hearts and home at different points throughout our relationship and marriage. When Kate Ledger shared this book with us, knowing how much we love cats it was a very special moment.

This book really is beautiful in so many ways. It's tender, simple and breaks through barriers of gender ... in fact, it does not take gender into account which is such a nice thing these days when dealing with simple gift books about romance. The Cats' Book of Romance fits all sorts of relationships no matter who you are as a couple. We really, really appreciated that.

For those who love cats and those who love and cherish each other - this is a book that blends that love for each other symbolized through two adorable cats. The pictures are expressive and beautiful and the sentiments are simple and meaningful. The is a book meant to be gifted, shared and lived.

This lovely little book is the perfect gift for friends, family, and yourself. The authors combine words and pictures with wit and wisdom, and the artful felines embody sensuality and fun. Keep this book nearby to lift the spirits when feeling blue.
My husband and I received this book as a gift, and are inspired to order copies for people we know who will be touched and amused by it. The topic is romance but the message is love. It was easy to award it five purrs--I mean stars.

Adorable and artistic

This gift was the perfect mix of adorable, tasteful, artistic, and reasonable price. I gave this book to my girlfriend, and it has been a huge hit! These cats are the cutest little creatures (and I am usually a dog person!) and the subtitles for the pictures are classics. I've seen Lisa Roy Sachs photography at shows in New York, and she is the real deal.

Needed Now more than ever in a Bush administration

The subtitle of the book is "Because I Know You Don't Read The Newspaper." Well, I read the newspaper, but as a committed reader of The New York Times, I don't have the opportunity to read the daily comic strips (since the NYT contains no syndicated daily strips). But I heard about The Boondocks and bought the book. What can I say? If there was a Mount Rushmore for cartoonists, Mr, McGruder belongs there. Not only are the strips funny, witty, and biting, but as a graduate of social and cultural analysis studies at Maryland, his perceptions are dead on. As McGruder writes, "the truth hurts." It hurts because your stomach hurts so bad from the laughing. Who else would think of putting an insulting blurb from the President of BET on the back cover of the book, if not a genius? It's their grandfather's dream and 40 acres, but Huey thinks that he is the mule. It is a town where the grammar school is named for J Edgar Hoover, and the junior high is named for George Wallace (or so Huey's grandfather mused). Riley's teacher was a nun and worked in a prison before becoming a teacher. Huey and Riley's neighbors include an interracial couple, their daughter, and a naïve white girl. Huey and Riley work hard to keep it real, but your laughs will come easy. I can't wait a next volume. I hope it includes Huey, Caesar and Mr. Tom Dubois' debate over Kwanzaa (budget Hanukkah? or a perpetuation of a fallacy of monolithic African culture?) Where is the line a Boondock's greeting cards?

Boondocks

I've known of Aaron McGruder's comic strip for a while but never actually got around to reading it (longtime fans will forgive me, I hope). Well, I got my hands on this collection and after catching up with everyone else I have to say that I have a new flag to wave. In fact, I'm kind of jealous. Boondocks is exactly the comic strip I would have created had I actually sat down and done it. Topics such as Hip-Hop, racial identity, stereotyping and poitics are all dealt with in an intellegent and non-condecending manner that's fresh in this age of stiffling political correctness.
It's refreshing to see hip-hop treated with the respect it deserves by someone who clearly loves the culture. The discussions about race and politics are honest and thought- provoking. Plus, like the best Calvin and Hobbes strips, Boondocks is just downright funny.
I have to admit that I had no idea that Mr. McGruder's strip had caused such an uproar. After reading the book I hit up the website and was treated to a very telling display of all the hate mail and negativity that has been spewed by numerous people. It's not surprising. One thing that I've come to realize is that a lot of people have a very low tolerance and understanding of social satire. That's why people don't "get" movies like "Fight Club" and bad mouth the current Spike Lee Joint "Bamboozled". And since Boondocks is social satire at its finest it will be doomed to misunderstanding and attack by people who don't "get it" and read more into it than they should. Populated by characters like Huey Freeman, a conspiricy theorizing revolutionary and Reily, his foul-mouthed, bling-blinging little brother, Boondocks is not your typical Sunday paper comic strip.
My favorite moment from the book involves Huey answering the phone and being presented with "exciting news" about new long distance service. Huey responds that he has exciting news too. . . "De La Soul is releasing a triple LP this year and The Roots are finally coming out with their long-awaited live album."
Well, I have exciting news too. . . The Boondocks strips are now collected in their first book. Pick it up.

Undeniably the best since Calvin & Hobbes

I picked up a copy of the Boondocks by chance because I liked the sub-title (Cause I know you don't read the newspapers). Upon opening the book, I was exposed such intelligent, funny, and sharp prose and endearing, honest, well-thought out characters that I became an instant fan. The Boondocks is destined to be the next Calvin & Hobbes and/or Doonesbury, and I am excited to have discovered it during it's first publication in book form. Someday, when it is a household name and syndicated across the country I'll be able to see "I knew it when . . ." Lucky me. Pick up a copy as quick as you can, I promise you wont be dissapointed.
As an aside, besides Huey (the main character and "radical scholar"), my favorite character is Jazmine. As a girl who also struggles with being biracial occasionally, I think she does a wonderful job of representing this aspect of race in America. Aaron (the artist behind the Boondocks) handles a potentially volatile topic with consistant clarity and beauty. Guisewite at her best

I'm an avid Cathy fan and this is Guisewite at her best. She keeps to her trademark humor and perceptiveness while using very "everyday" situations. To those who complain that the cartoon plays upon stereotypical female concerns such as shopping and food, I counter that these themes make the humor relatable to many women, while providing a backdrop to the cartoonist's witty and incisive social commentary.

This particular collection plays upon an unexpected twist in the Cathy-Irving saga. After a lapse of three years, Irving turns up in a very unexpected way in Cathy's life - her professional life! - as a downsizing consultant. Guisewite very cleverly develops various angles of this theme, such as the often seen discrepancy between a person's competent "together" professional demeanor versus the more lackadaisical, sometimes inept, personal one. The irony is heightened for instance when Cathy's boss introduces Irving as being hired to do some housecleaning (as he euphemistically calls it) for the company and Cathy remembers that he does not even pick up his towels off the floor!

Of course Guisewite weaves in her usual themes into the plot. The title itself stems from a realization that her cartoon protagonist looks fabulous with the aid of the usual flesh constricting sartorial arsenal of corsets, tight hose and stillettos, etc. It speaks to the inventiveness and imagination of Guisewite that she can bring up many fresh and astute takes on these seemingly mundane aspects of the female experience.

Cathy--still controversial!

Even in 2004, the 1999 Cathy looks as controversial as ever. No wonder so many hate her and so many love her. Her creator, Cathy Guisewite, marches in and takes no prisoners in the battle of the sexes and even more importantly, in the Ingmar-Bergman like drama of love and hate that exists between mother and daughter. Poor Cathy, we always think, when she is forced to listen to more abuse from her mother, and yet, she seems to enjoy it in a way, perhaps she really wants to have children herself.

The way she tries to fit into unsuitable clothes was obviously borrowed for another 90s sensation, the over-the-hill scenesters of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, and this collection in turn tips the hat right back by alluding to the UK-made TV sitcom in its title. Guisewite has made a million variations on a very limited palette of character types and her drawing isn't the greatest in the world, but she's got angst going for her and an international fan base as well.

Cathy! Too funny to ignore.

Growing up I devoured the Cathy books that were available. This past Christmas I decided to introduce her to my daughters. The sarcastic, feminist, self-loathing, truth telling Cathy is still a hit after all these years. I was sad to see that a lot of the collections were not readily available for purchase. I sincerely hope that there will be re-prints available in the very near future, so that a new generation will come to love sarcastic Cathy as she navigates life.

Highly recommend for girls or women that may not be into conventional comic strips but want to be entertained where the lead is an insecure female trying to get through the day. Cathy is a classic but yet still has us smiling because even though things change they are still eerily the same.

At the same time, the transnational marketplace encouraged these producers to compete by marketing "authentic" Argentine culture. Domestic filmmakers, radio and recording entrepreneurs, lyricists, musicians, actors, and screenwriters borrowed heavily from a rich tradition of popular melodrama. Although the resulting mass culture trafficked in conformism and consumerist titillation, it also disseminated versions of national identity that celebrated the virtue and dignity of the poor, while denigrating the wealthy as greedy and mean-spirited. This anti-elitism has been overlooked by historians, who have depicted radio and cinema as instruments of social cohesion and middle-class formation. Analyzing tango and folk songs, film comedies and dramas, radio soap operas, and other genres, Karush argues that the Argentine culture industries generated polarizing images and narratives that provided much of the discursive raw material from which Juan and Eva Perón built their mass movement.

Thought provoking and iconoclastic.

Very thought provoking and iconoclastic. I know that astrophysicists generally hate this book. In fact I bought it because one of them wrote that the person who put forth this point of view was psychotic. When a scientist stoops to ad hominem attacks, you can be pretty sure he's running scared.

The idea here is that the universe is loaded with charged particles called plasma that causes unimaginably powerful electrical phenomena. It's hard to believe but very entertaining to consider that:

o The Grand Canyon was cut by electricity
o Most craters were created by electricity
o The stars are big light bulbs (so to speak)
o Some starts may have planets INSIDE them that can support life.
o Black holes don't really exist

This list goes on.

A timely introduction to a new paradigm

Ever wondered why NASA and its sycophants are always puzzled at every new discovery in space, and why its vaunted "experts" are consistently incapable of explaining any phenomenon without recourse to mathematical gymnastics and imaginary constructions pulled from the nearest hat? It's quite simple really: because standard theories are as wrong as it's possible to be, ignoring the presence of electromagnetic forces in favour of gravity, a force 10 to the power of 39 (that's 10 with 39 trailing zeroes) weaker than EM. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly clear that the universe and everything in it is motivated by electricity, and that gravity is simply the observed result of charge differential. Strangely we know (or THINK we know) that subatomic particles such as neutrons, protons and electrons are controlled by electrical forces, yet for some reason this is ignored when we think on bigger scales. Not for much longer, methinks.

A concise introduction to the Electric Universe, written by a non-specialist in terms anyone who actually reads the book should be able to understand.

Thoroughly recommended for anyone who sees the obvious disconnects in orthodox "theory" (guesswork would be a better word, and not even particularly good guesswork, as imaginary entities such as "Black Holes" and "Dark Matter" show all too clearly) and is disillusioned with the overbearing attitude and lack of sensible explanations from mainstream astronomy.

I was led to venture deep in to "Electric universe " model after reading one of velikovsky's books. The author has presented his case beautifully and I am convinced by his theory. There are enough evidence to prove his point and I would recommend this book in a "beginner's" category for any one who wants to peep into this part of science before going deeper into it .

For the individual, this aspirational tendency manifests in a continual striving to be a better Muslim. It is grounded in the thought of Muhammad Iqbal (1877–1938), the poet, philosopher, and politician considered the spiritual founder of Pakistan. Khan finds that Iqbal provided the philosophical basis for recasting Islam as an open religion with possible futures as yet unrealized, which he did in part through his engagement with the French philosopher Henri Bergson. Drawing on ethnographic research in the neighborhoods and mosques of Lahore and on readings of theological polemics, legal history, and Urdu literature, Khan points to striving throughout Pakistani society: in prayers and theological debates and in the building of mosques, readings of the Qur'an, and the undertaking of religious pilgrimages. At the same time, she emphasizes the streak of skepticism toward the practices of others that accompanies aspiration. She asks us to consider what is involved in affirming aspiration while acknowledging its capacity for violence.

This is a must-read for Political Scientists that work on the Middle East!

One of the most insightful studies on the relation between spirituality and the modern state of Pakistan.
I myself am a political scientist, and many books on Pakistan that I have read give quite an incomplete or superficial rendering of the complex relationship in Pakistan between religion and politics.
"Muslim Becoming" provides us with a much-needed thoughtful study that connects the unique history of this country to the spiritual aspirations of its diverse people.
I strongly recommend this book to political scientists.
In fact it is a must-read if you study the Middle East!!
