It has been two decades since Yugoslavia fell apart. The brutal conflicts that followed its dissolution are over, but the legacy of the tragedy continues to unsettle the region. Reconciliation is a long and difficult process that necessitates a willingness to work together openly and objectively in confronting the past. Over the past ten years the Scholars’ Initiative has assembled an international consortium of historians, social scientists, and jurists to examine the salient controversies that still divide the peoples of former Yugoslavia. The findings of its eleven research teams represent a direct assault on the proprietary narratives and interpretations that nationalist politicians and media have impressed on mass culture in each of the successor states. Given gaps in the historical record and the existence of sometimes contradictory evidence, this volume does not pretend to resolve all of the outstanding issues. Nevertheless, this second edition incorporates new evidence and major developments that have taken place in the region since the first edition went to press. At the heart of this project has always been the insistence of the authors that they would continue to reconsider their analyses and conclusions based on credible new evidence. Thus, in this second edition, the work of the Scholars' Initiative continues. The broadly conceived synthesis will assist scholars, public officials, and the people they represent both in acknowledging inconvenient facts and in discrediting widely held myths that inform popular attitudes and the electoral success of nationalist politicians who profit from them. Rather than rely on special pleading and appeals to patriotism that have no place in scholarship, the volume vests its credibility in the scientific credentials of its investigators, the transparent impartiality of its methodology, and an absolute commitment to soliciting and examining evidence presented by all sides.

About the Author
Charles W. Ingrao is Professor of History at Purdue University. He has authored three books and edited five others on German, Habsburg, and Balkan history. He is Founding Editor of H-Net's HABSBURG discussion group and has served as editor of The Austrian History Yearbook (1997-2006).Thomas A. Emmert is Professor of History at Gustavus Adolphus College. He has held visiting appointments at Stanford and the University of Minnesota. Trained as a medievalist with a specialty in southeastern Europe, he has focused in recent years on nineteenth- and twentieth-century history in the same region.

No book on the former Yugoslavia will contain ground truth...but this one tries very hard to give a balanced approach.

A university professor at a professional diplomatic seminar recommended this book to me--he is a contributor. It is one of the best and most balanced review I've seen of the controversies surrounding the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
Basic premise of the book: get professional scholars from all viewpoints (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, and other outside parties) and have them present their case using accepted scholarly research standards. Controversial viewpoints are allowed, but only if backed up by hard documentary evidence vice hearsay.
The preface of the book self-admittedly states that not all the answers are here and that it is a work in progress. It is analogous to a 1000 piece puzzle of which only about 600 - 700 pieces are in place and the others lost; if and when they are found, the authors promise a revised edition.
Admittedly, no one will be completely satisfied--particularly those who were there or who are strong advocates of one nationlistic viewpoint. For example, while it clearly outlines the systematic ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the Bosnian Serbs and their JNA (Yugoslav Army) partners, it does not shy away from ethnic cleansing later used in Croatia against Serbs or some lesser-known but no less problematic cleansing conducted by Bosniak forces, particularly in the later stages of the conflict. In each case, this book describes the controversial nature of the event, explains what evidence now exists and what is missing, and finally attempts some conclusions based on known-evidence. Importantly, its also points out what conclusions are impossible to make with existing evidence.
This book is not for everyone. I suggest that you should have a better-than-basic understanding of the dissolution of Yugoslavia before delving into this tome particularly since it does not cover the events in a step-by-step historical timeline. Rather, it presents the major controversial issues and the best academic research available today to analyze various viewpoints, i.e. an analytic vice narrative slant.
Result: in my opinion, a remarkably balanced history that is well-worth reading if you want to understand the history of this troubled region.
