About the Author
Justin LaRosa is a licensed clinical social worker and Deacon who leads the new ministry of Hyde Park United Methodist Church in downtown Tampa, Florida. He served for eight years as the Minister of Discipleship, working with a team of leaders to facilitate the process of organizing, training, empowering, and supporting laypersons. Justin is co-author with James A. Harnish of A Disciple's Path and A Disciple's Heart.
James A. Harnish is the author of numerous books and Bible studies, including A Disciple’s Path, Strength for the Broken Places, Simple Rules for Money, and You Only Have to Die. He is an acclaimed pastor and ordained elder in The United Methodist Church who has led congregations throughout Florida, most recently Hyde Park in Tampa where he served for twenty-two years. In 2014, after forty-two years of active ministry, he retired from full-time ministry and moved to Winter Haven, Florida, where he lives with his wife, Marsha, and enjoys writing, reading, and playing with his grandchildren.

The Wesleyan Way of Christ

James Harnish has put together a wonderful resource for people in the Wesleyan-Methodist tradition, especially for United Methodists. Participants will explore:
1) the goal of Christian discipleship
2) the role of grace in discipleship
3) the role of spiritual disciplines in discipleship.
I would summarize Harnish's view this way: Christians grow in love of God and neighbor through intentional use of spiritual disciplines within the context of a Christian community. While the book has some elements of Methodist history, it is NOT primarily a history class but a guide to what John Wesley called "practical divinity," or practical, experiential Christian faith. Harnish focuses on the spiritual disciplines mentioned in the United Methodist membership vow: prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness.
I used this with two different adult groups and both appreciated it. This booklet is the Daily Workbook. The Daily Workbook is for individual use on a daily basis. Participants should be encouraged to use the daily workbook but not required. They really need the COMPANION READER. The daily workbook is a good resource for discussion leaders.

Books and handbooks and DVD of a Disciples

We are not finished with this plus we will run another set of these. We have a church that is growing with folks from Catholic and Protestant church folks. This is a great lead in for educating the many new members into the church. Thanks for providing an accurate set of lessons about the United Methodist history. We have been learning about the vows of the UM Church to support the church with our presence, our prayers, our service, our gifts, and in 2012 the people of the UM Churches, came together and added "our witness". This series of books - the Leader's Guide, the Handbook for the participants and a prose on one of the above ways.

Excellent Resource for United Methodists

This is a really excellent resource for learning what it means to be a disciple in the United Methodist tradition. It explores the membership vows of serving the church with prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness and how to dig deeper into a relationship with Jesus through the spiritual disciplines related to each. I will definitely recommend this to United Methodist churches. I would recommend the companion reader to go with it.
