With 90 one- to four-page long essays ranging from "Gonzo Fishing" to "When You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Take Him Fishing," Quinnett (Pavlov's Trout and Darwin's Bass) clearly views angling as a necessary adjunct to life. Fishing is a chancy endeavor, otherwise, he notes, "[t]hey'd call it catching." Quinnett, a psychologist specializing in suicide, sees the pursuit of trout et al. as a metaphor for the good and interesting life. It leads to clockless dreamlands away from the chaos of everyday work. And, by his calculations, it makes great economic sense, with a decent rod and reel costing only .043 pennies a day?for a person who lives 28,000 days. "If you can't see the logic of this," he writes, "you are obviously not a fisherman." A fisherman himself for half a century, Quinnett recalls the public civility and private anguish of old-timers when newcomers catch a giant bass with nothing but beginner's luck; and discusses the bad or funny things that must happen to fishermen because "[a] fishing trip without laughter is not much of a fishing trip." Fishing is about "being free for a few hours, and spending time with those we love." Time is not money, he maintains, because money never bought back any of the time spent earning it. Although Quinnett says that fish and philosophy go together, readers will find these breezy episodes much more fun than Aristotelian syllogisms. (Oct.) Powerful truths and gentle humor about living life well.

Fishing Lessons collects a variety of insightful essays from a passionate fisherman and professional psychologist who is also a wonderful writer. His stories speak about what is important in life--taking risks and reaching for goals, cherishing family and friends, respecting yourself, surrounding yourself with people who's qualities you admire, and always, always, keeping your sense of humor. Though I can count my flyfishing days on my fingers, this colorful angler's words resonated with me. If your passion isn't fishing, but is hunting, or hiking, or even stamp collecting, Quinnett's stories will still inspire you and enrich you in surprising ways. This book will make my Christmas shopping easier, as I know several sportsmen that I can't wait to share it with.

Fishing Lessons

I first picked this book up because I love to go fishing and wanted to see if I could get some pointers. This is not a lesson book on how to fish but what to get out of fishing. I took this book to work a few times and read it while I was on lunch and it was great. I loved all of the little stories he had to tell about fishing. I related many of them to my own life, especially the ones about when he was a kid trespassing on his neighbors pond to fish. I did that and could relate very well and Quinnett gave me a way to look back on those experiences and laugh about them. Many short little stories go into this book and range from very funny to serious to intense and then back to sad. Most of them make you reflect on your own experiences and get you hooked on the book.
I let some of my co-workers read this book as well and they all loved it and had many stories of their own to relate after reading it. I have returned to read several of the stories again and would recomend it to anyone. Especially to those people in your lives who dont understand why you like fishing and the outdoors so much. Quinnet gives a great reason to be an outdoorsman and to love what you do.

Probably the most entertaining, candid , and comedic "outdoor " writer I've had the pleasure of reading, Paul Quinnett is nothing short of a giant in his field. That's if you can say writing IS his field , because this man wears many hats. As a clinical psychologist, he has a special insight into what makes us tick, as well as what makes us chuckle! I only wish he had the time to pen more titles, because every one has been a gem, worthy of reading over again! You don't even have to be a fisherman to identify with his humility or his sarcasm, as he only uses angling as a vehicle to deliver his goods! Hats off to Paul Quinnett!
