About the Author
Richard Stanley Cagan is the author of two biographies, seven full-length novels, a collection of short stories, five plays, and one screenplay. He holds a BA degree from Fordham University and a doctorate and postdoctorate degree from Columbia University. He lives in Flagler County, Florida.

Non fiction?

I had pre ordered this book and was looking forward to reading it. At the beginning of the book there is a mention that SOME of the names have been fictionalized. This should have been the first tip off. This book suppossedly takes place primarily during the late 60s/early 80s. By now all of the real names of the five families of New York have been known for decades. Why in the world would you have to phoney up the names of the bosses,underbosses,consigliers, and any other made man belonging to any of these brugads. Anyone that has even the slightest knowledge of the Mafia are very familiar with the real names of these families. One example of this is the telling of the famous Joe Columbo hit during the second Italo-America day rally. The incident is semi-fictionalized using fake names. What was the point of this? Another incident mentioned at the beginning of the book was about the free concert put on by the Rolling Stones at now famous Altamont concert. The author mentions that there were over 800 members of the Hells Angels MC present at this concert. In '69, there probably were only 100 Angels in the entire state of Cali,let alone at Altamont. In the mid to late 60s the club was near extinction due to extensive police harrassment. I personally think this book should have been labeled a novel rather than true crime. If you like mob novels, you may like it. If you want the real names as I do, then you probably wont.

Save your money, I should have realized when it said docudrama in the title. Book starts off in Altamont talking about I don't know what. Not sure if he was trying acid at the time and now trying to put into words with the writer what he was feeling or seeing. I've read a lot of True Crime that is not good but was able to read the entire book, I can't make it a quarter of the way. I'll put it away for a while and try again later, maybe have a better review for ya...

"Mafia Fiction"

An absolutely obsurd book that reads like a fiction novel. Even the small amount of facts delivered in the book concerning the Five Families of New York are suspect. There have been hundreds of books written about the American mafia n it's most well know members n dealings over the past 50 years, some of the best of them give you all the names, places n times of all involved, so.....why fictionalize these well known names n facts unless this book is in fact fiction, a novel? Actually the best books have been written over the past 20-25 years, so there is no need to fictionalize anything if this book was based on real people n events, unless it is fiction?
The book's contents are instantly misrepresented by the photos of bosses Vito Genovese n Lucky Luciano, along with famous mafia turncoat Joe Valachi n Harlem drug kingpin Nicky Barnes.
From the very beginning of this book, with the story provided about the California Hell's Angels of the 1960s, all the way to the end, much of this book's info is false n fictionalized. If this book were to be presented as a fictionalized novel, then I could easily give it a 3 or even a 4, but in terms of factual information concerning American mafia history.....fughettaboudit!!!
If you go in for the Puzo novels or any of the other well written mafia based novels, then you may very well like this book. If your a mafia watcher or historian....don't bother!
