Drawing upon their many years of experience and expertise in the publishing industry, Eric Kampmann and Margot Atwell have effectively collaborated to produce -- January 2014 edition, Midwest Book Review (Library Bookwatch)
A brief but comprehensive survey both of the crisis-beset book-publishing industry and of strategies for authors and publishers to get books on the market. A rule, or so we wish, of how-to books on writing should be this: If the author has not written a prior book other than that how-to book, then it's not to be taken seriously. So it is with publishing. The market is crowded with how-to-get-your-book-published books written by people with no discernible credentials, which is emphatically not the case with marketing guru Kampmann (late of Viking, St Martin's, Simon & Schuster, etc.) and writer/editor/publishing insider Atwell. Their approach assumes no prior experience, for there is a fine line between professionalism and cluelessness, and it judiciously divides the landscape of publishing into the traditional and the new--and largely unexplored. They counsel that a new author might wish the shelter of a major New York trade house, with the proviso that the biggest downside of being published by traditional publishers is that a title can easily get lost in the pack, creating the probability of very disappointing results. True enough, as every midlist author knows. On the self-publishing front, the authors wisely advise that no book should go out the door without having been professionally edited, and they add plenty of other useful bits to the mix. A highlight, for instance, is the marketing timetable, which will be of tremendous help even to authors working with the majors and wanting to be sure things are happening when they should. The success stories that close the book are of a lily-gilding variety, however, and one wishes that the space had been given over to more of Kampmann and Atwell themselves. About the Author
Kampmann is also the author of Tree of Life and The Book Publisher's Handbook. He received an undergraduate degree from Brown University and a graduate degree in English at Stony Brook. Kampmann has worked in book publishing since 1970, and has taught at several universities, including Harvard, Columbia, New York University, and Hofstra. He has also led many Bible studies.
Margot Atwell has worked in publishing since 2003. She is also a freelance editor and book reviewer, and has written for publications such as Publishers Weekly, Publishing Perspectives, Moviefone, Five on Five, and Derbylife. She is a graduate of Smith College, where she founded and edited Labrys, a journal of art and literature.

A great guide, if a bit unfocused

I was recently sent a copy of The Insider's Guide to Book Publishing Success and I have to say, I was skeptical. In the last two years I've read approximately 15-20 books on the writing, publishing, or marketing of books, so I was doubtful this one would have any new information in it. I was wrong, however, which was exciting, but there were definitely pluses and minuses about the book.
Pros: The book has an extremely detailed, step-by-step explanation of the publishing process from the nitty-gritty of formatting the manuscript to the lingo regarding the binding of books, all the way through marketing the title. It's information that is useful to have, even for someone hoping to go the traditional route, just to get a better idea of why it takes a year or more from the publisher's acceptance to your book on the shelf. Obviously, the information is even more pertinent for an author wanting to go the self-publishing route, since it describes the team that needs to be assembled to produce/champion the book, and the realities of publishing.
Cons: The major con of this book is that it suffers from a split personality--it seems like the writers didn't have a very delineated audience in mind. The description on the back of the book states:
"The publishing industry is changing rapidly, and there are more options for authors than ever before. Should you find an agent and search for a traditional publishing deal or consider self-publishing? Should you print hardcover copies or opt for an ebook-only launch? Should you hire a publicist? This easy-to-read, nuts-and-bolts guide covers everything from what to look for in a contract to how many copies to print."
Therefore, I was expecting a book directed at authors. The beginning of the book seemed to be just that, but as it went on, it seemed to veer more and more toward people who were interested in starting an independent publishing company. (Such as on page 102 when it gave a list of "20 Financial Tips for Independent Publishers.") This lack of clarity detracted from the book as I wasn't always sure if the advice was truly pertinent to someone interested in self-publishing or whether it was more for industry professionals. Moreover, the back of the book seems to suggest that it will provide advice for going the traditional route as well as for those interested in self-publishing, but there is very little information for submitting to the big 6 publishers. There's not even a discussion of the pros and cons of finding an agent, which the back of the book specifically suggests that there is.
Final Analysis: The book is very useful if you're interested in self-publishing or you want an insider's perspective of the industry. The book is produced by people from "Midpoint Trade Books" which is a full-service national book distribution company. I've looked them up on Predators and Editors and they aren't flagged as "Not Recommended" which is always a good sign. Therefore, if you're considering going in the self-pub direction, or you're still hoping to go the traditional route but want a behind-the-scenes view of the publishing process, this book is for you.
With that caveat, I give this book 4 stars.

What You Didn't Know You Didn't Know - Good Stuff

This little book packs a wallop, especially for authors bent on publishing their first book. The authors dissect the world of publishing into its major components of choosing a publishing strategy, the editorial process, design, printing, sales and distribution, and marketing and publicity. I was asked to review it by Beaufort Books because I have reviewed others in this category.
The Introduction begins, "Many authors think that writing their book is the hardest thing they've ever done. Then they try to publish it." This book makes it clear that authors would do well to focus as much effort on publishing as on writing. In fact, reading this book before or while writing is a good idea to save time and better plan the marketing campaign, editorial scheduling and other required aspects of getting a book to market with the maximum likelihood of delivering sales at a profit. The marketing section is particularly good. There is some discussion of ebook publishing both in its own right as a primary channel and as a market testing tool. This is complimentary to recent books on Kindle publishing that contain additional ideas and analytical tools to measure ebook market acceptance.
At first, I found myself in agreement with another reviewer who questions the intended audience. The main body of the book is focused on authors themselves, while the financial tips section, later in the book, addresses independent publishers. On further thought, it is clear that any author who uses a publishing route other than traditional, which likely includes the majority of all authors, is in fact an independent publisher, to some degree at least. By approaching a book as a business, using the perspective of an independent publisher, one is likely to greatly improve results in terms of market acceptance, uptake rate and sales. In the final section, "Success Stories," there is an interesting narrative about self-help guru Robert Kiyosaki's journey to success that explains how he leveraged his first book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" into a whole portfolio of related products, becoming in fact a one-author independent publisher. In the same vein, many authors may be missing an opportunity to reinvent themselves as independent publishers to amplify their financial success.
I debated giving four or five stars to this book, possibly knocking one off over minor criticisms related to style and phrasing, but unrelated to the value of the content. I decided to give it five stars because the contents are so well organized, indexed, and succinct that I will surely refer to it in the future. I suspect other readers and aspiring authors might do the same.

Comprehensive yet easy to read and implement

Eric Kampmann is one of the most knowledgeable people in publishing today. In this book he gives an excellent overview with specific action items for the seven major aspects of book publishing. He takes the reader through the process from writing the manuscript, choosing the best publishing method for your goals, budgeting, marketing and understanding the finances. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to approach their book-publishing and book-selling efforts as a profit-making business.
