A dog and his girl show how six legs are better than two in this brand new mystery series!
When Dodge, a German shepherd police dog, finds himself retired after an accident leaves him deaf in one ear, he's lucky to be adopted by the perfect family. Twelve-year-old Cassie Sullivan, his girl, smells almost as good as a dog, and gets her nose for sleuthing from her police chief mom and coroner dad. Cassie is smart and quick on her feet, and doesn't mind breaking a couple rules to get to the bottom of a mystery. Dodge has forty-two dog years of experience solving crime, as well as a great network of other four-legged colleagues when he needs more intel.
When Verdel Ward, the richest man in town, goes missing, it seems like everyone from the mayor to the housekeeper wants his fortune, which he's left behind with no will. But Cassie and Dodge can smell a mystery from a mile away, and can't help wondering why a miser would go swimming in a dangerous cove, what's up with the suspicious fiancee, who's been sneaking around the mansion, and where a twin brother has come from.

When local tycoon Verdel Ward mysteriously drowns and his body disappears, suddenly people far and wide want a piece of Ward’s coastal estate. Spunky 12-year-old Cassie, the police chief’s daughter, and Dodge, a German shepherd formerly on the K-9 squad, just want answers. As the duo goes undercover to solve the mystery, alternating chapters tell the story from both the girl’s and the dog’s perspectives. While Cassie must contend with the school bully and sneaking past the chief of police (aka Mom), Dodge observes his family’s dynamics and rounds up his neighborhood pooch pals to help him dig up clues. Perilous encounters with suspects and criminals and hints of Dodge’s former life as a working dog provide the right amount of suspense to this easy-to-solve mystery. Cassie’s after-school job at an animal shelter, working with an abused dog, emphasizes the powerful relationship between humans and their pets. Dog lovers will no doubt enjoy this first book in the A Dog and His Girl Mysteries series. Grades 3-5. --Angela Leeper

Strong Characters - Elegant Writing - An Honest Tale
By Pop Bop
This book is the first entry in a new series of a Dog-and-his-Girl mysteries. There is also a second volume about to be released. It looks like it will be a very strong series if this book is any indicator.
Since there are lots of middle grade mystery/adventure/amateur sleuth books out there, it takes something special to rise above the crowd. Here, a number of factors all move in this book's favor.
First off, we have very strong, engaging, distinct and well-defined characters. Our heroine, Cassie, is smart, decent, common-sensical, and up to any challenge. Her parents are not dopes or nonentities; they are substantial if secondary characters. The best friend has some spunk and appeal. Cassie's older brother and younger sister play out much more realistically than in almost any similar book I've read recently. In fact, the family scenes have an authenticity that is very rare for this kind of book.
Second, the mystery itself is of high quality, given the target reader group. Often the mysteries in these books aren't mysteries at all, or are obvious, or have quirky or magical/fantastic solutions. This book has an honest mystery, (along the lines of, say, Van Draanen's Sammy Keyes mystery books).
Third, the actual quality of the writing is remarkably high. I don't mean it's flowery or over the top. I mean that it is elegant and restrained, with lots of tight little asides, nice similes, well phrased observations and descriptions, subtle humor, and honesty.
Fourth, for what it's worth, the dog is very good. Not too cutesy; not too all knowing - very doggy and companionable.
Finally, the book is cheerful and good humored. There is no phony tween agony, no snotty observations, no mean girls, no ridiculous bullies. There is no run-of-the mill just for the sake of it fake drama or conflict. Where there is conflict or drama it is part of the story.
This book reminds me of some of my favorite authors who work in a similar vein. I'm thinking of Rebecca Stead and Ellen Potter and Polly Horvath. People who write clearly and well about strong girl heroes, with insight and good humor. Like Ms. Mason, each of them has a distinct and engaging voice, and real fondness for and commitment to the characters.
So, if you want an engaging and spirited middle grade heroine, coupled with a
an engaging story and subtle quality writing, this book is well worth consideration.
Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to the author or the publisher of this book.

Great for Fans of Nancy Drew
By Beverly L. Archer
This is one of my favorite new children's series. It's about a dog and it's a mystery - two of my favorite things. It's a quick, easy read, perfect for Nancy Drew fans. It is a little hard to believe that Cassie is not older than she is, but that doesn't take away from the story. The story is told alternating between Cassie's and Dodge's viewpoints. I love hearing the story from Dodge's view. He's my kind of dog.
Play Dead is the first in the series. I can't wait to read the next in the series - Dead Man's Best Friend.

Great series entry!
By P. Melrose
I really enjoyed this book. It introduces the hero, Dodge the retired police dog, and heroine, young Cassie Sullivan, who adopts him. It is told from both Dodge's and Cassie's points of view which adds interest to the story. Both girl and dog are smart, curious and very quick, which is an advantage in solving the mystery they uncover. This book was written for older children in the 10 to 14 year range and is definitely suitable for them, but it is well-written enough and interesting enough to engage adults as well. I look forward to the next installment.
