Pray like you've never prayed before!

I was raised in a strict Catholic household where prayer was connected with nuns, incense, and confession. Maxine Outlaw's book shows that prayer is nothing like that. She leads you through day-to-day activities which we all perform and teaches you how the little things in your daily life amount to giving prayer, praise, and glory to [insert your definition of God here].
The chapters are short and digestible, ripe with examples that have impact. Outlaw seems like a friend you've known forever once the book is done; you learn her likes/dislikes, idiosyncracies, foibles, and talents. Although at one point in her life she was in the religious ministry, she does not preach in the book. In fact, she makes her points through vignettes that are humorous and heartwarming. If you want to know WHY elephants in Asian marketplaces are always found with a sturdy stick in their possession, you'll need to read this book. If you would like to appreciate the flora and fauna in your neighborhood better, you'll need to read this book. Lastly, if you want the inside scoop on how to dispose of your mother's bodily remains through cremation (while striving to retain your dignity and sense of propriety) you've GOT to read this book.

A Pastor's Perspective. . .

I'm the pastor of a postmodern church "experiment" ministering to young adults, young families and teens, and this book would be my number one pick as a beginner's book on prayer. This book covers areas most books on prayer won't touch such as "angry prayer" and is able to communicate in terms which are neither too difficult nor simple. I highly reccommend this book, regardless of your faith background, if you're looking for a book on how to pray, this is it!

A helluva good book.

Pray Like Hell is a simple, easy-to-do guide to prayer -- written in plain, non-churchy English -- and it's funny. What more could I ask? Though Outlaw has a church background, she doesn't insist I do or start going to church. She shows how prayer is like good conversation -- with God. I never thought I'd read a book about prayer that was fun. I recommend it highly to anyone (like me) who wants to pray, isn't religious, but wants to know how. Get it!
