Collects first five issues of Marvel's "Secret Avengers" title from Summer 2010

This collects the first five issues of the "Secret Avengers" title from writer Ed Brubaker and penciler/inker Mike Deodato published by Marvel Comics in Summer 2010. This new title was part of Marvel's 2010 "Heroic Age" promotion that also saw the relaunch of "Avengers" and "New Avengers" and the end of the "Dark Avengers" and "Avengers: Initiative" titles. Led by Steve Rogers, the black-ops "Secret" team includes Black Widow, Beast, Sharon Carter, Valkyrie, War Machine, Moon Knight, Ant-Man and Nova. Rogers recruits Moon Knight as follows: "It's a strike force, off the books. You'd be on call, using your skills as needed."
The plot provides an enjoyable mix of action, espionage and technology. The first four issues comprise the "Secret Histories" story arc that recalls Marvel Universe fixtures Roxxon and the Serpent Crown plus the titular trip to Mars. Issues #1 and #4 each extend a few pages past the standard 22-page count. The fifth issue further explores the dragon-emblazoned Shadow Council and sets up the following story arc. I'm rounding up with the four-star rating, but each issue of this title kept me interested enough to buy the next one. Marvel's list price of $24.99 for five issues seems high: Amazon's discount lowers the cost to about $2.99 per issue.

Brubaker does it again.

Well ill start this off by saying I've enjoyed Ed Brubakers run on Captain America for years now. This series is his first try with a major team book (I think) and its just his style. Covert ops are his speciality. Brubaker does a great job with a varied cast here. And they all fill some role on this team.
The team itself has some hits (Beast, Moon Knight, Steve Rovers and Nova) with some im not sure yets. (Ant man, sharon carter, black widow) I trust Brubaker because of his amazing work on Captain America, and it will be interesting to watch how this team jells.
The actual story is fast paced adventure with a surprising enemy, and a great adventurous quality to it. I hope Moon Knight gets some play during this run. I feel his character has always been obscured. He may get his chance to shine here.
Overall a great start to a new series in the heroic age.

You had me at Moon Knight and the Irredeemable Ant Man...

In the aftermath of Dark Reign and Siege and the rescinding of the Superhuman Registration Act, Steve Rogers, now Marvel's top cop, decides to be more proactive with crime-fighting. Ergo, the Secret Avengers (think X-Force but with less claws). The potential of Steve Rogers' black ops team convinces me to keep the title on my pull list. The actual execution of the "Mission to Mars" story leaves me sort of shrugging. It's a satisfactory read or close enough, yeah, but not quite what I was hoping for. SECRET AVENGERS: MISSION TO MARS collects the series' first five issues, is written by the excellent Ed Brubaker, is illustrated by Mike Deodato, whose art-fu is strong.
"Mission to Mars" starts promisingly, with the Black Widow posing as an escort and, more hilariously, if you know her, Valkyrie posing as an escort. They're undercover, having heard rumors of the Serpent Crown resurfacing in the custody of the always shady Roxxon Corporation. What's unearthed is another sort of crown, this with weird tentacles attached. Hank McCoy (a.k.a. Beast), the new team's designated big brain, digs up ties to the red planet and so off the secrety Avengers go to Mars, where they find an abandoned mining facility. But, of course, it's not really abandoned.
I was very much anticipating this series once I learned that it was intended to be Steve Rogers' shadowy ops team and that Moon Knight and the Irredeemable Ant Man would be two of the members. No way could I pass up that group dynamics. The "Mission to Mars" arc, for the most part, is a decent story but it's lacking enough of the espionage elements I was expecting. Brubaker strives to establish an ominous tone with the presence of these multiple all-powerful crowns and the foreshadowing of an ancient destructive entity. But it all broke down into typical superhero stuff, and with an ending that's pretty anticlimactic. These Avengers were selected for how they fit into Cap's hush hush missions, and yet, here, most of these heroes are barely given squat to do other than punch a mob of foot soldiers. It's disappointing that Moon Knight and the Widow get pushed to the background, disappointing that, in the end, it all came down to tired superhero fighty fights.
I'm not really sure how Richard Rider (a.k.a. Nova) figures into the skullduggery biz. His cosmic power set doesn't invite the cloak and dagger. Or maybe Brubaker just needed some chump to get possessed by that tentacly crown so that Steve Rogers could later and once again demonstrate his mental toughness and overall superiority over the common dude (you'll see what I mean). I'm not at all surprised that Nova, at the end of the story, is relegated to reserve status (off he goes to do his bit in the Thanos Imperative saga). The one thing I really liked about this arc is that Eric O'Grady gets some of the spotlight. Steve Rogers - whose mutant power apparently is to be able to convince anyone to join his team - talked O'Grady into signing on because he says this is the best way for the Irredeemable Ant Man to gain redemption, to be regarded as an honest-to-gosh hero. Ant Man acquits himself well. I'll even spoilerize things by saying he saves the day. Except that, afterwards, no one believes that he saved the day. That's pretty funny.
Throwing a wrench in the works is the Shadow Council, and it looks like Brubaker intends for this organization to act as primary foil for the skulky Avengers. Interestingly, one of the Shadow Council's members bears a striking resemblance to a certain eye-patched ex-Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. That's explained away in the engrossing issue #5, engrossing if you're down with Nick Fury's history. Another nice reveal is the presence of an obscure character who was featured in THE MARVELS PROJECT, a fantastic mini-series written by Brubaker which chronicled the origins of Marvel's - or, back then, Timely Comics' - Golden Age costumed heroes. Issue #5 is worth it alone just for that one moment in which Steve Rogers chastises Nick Fury, leaving the eye-patched one's flabber sort of gasted.
It's not a bad trade. I'm just wishing for less tights and more espionage plots, more sneaky capers. I also want more Fist of Khonshu, dammit. But no worries. SECRET AVENGERS gets better with its second arc. Check this out: Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, stops by, bringing all sorts of pulpy martial arts intrigue.
