The neuromuscular book is relevant to me. I have ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Jean Martin Charcot, a French physician characterized
and categorized all the NMD mentioned above, including Charcot's Tooth Disease. NMD's generally strikes people between the ages of forty and seventy,
and strikes more men than women, and more veterans than non-veterans. These diseases are beginning to creep into the younger ages i.e., mid to 20's. NMDS were discovered nearly 200 years ago and Americans are afflicted with ALS and twenties. 5600 are diagnosed with ALS and 5600 die each year from specifically ALS, the most common of all neuromuscular diseases. It costs about 200,000 dollars year to care for just patient One of the facts I can attest to. Thirty-thousand people ALS and 400,000 world-wide. Many of these there is no cure. These diseases attack the motor cortex of the brain with radical proteins superoxide dismutase and glutamate that send messages down the spinal chord to the nerves The ultimate fate of an ALS patient is death within 3 to 5 years. Some
live longer. These are monster diseases. Sorry no humor here. Just devastation.
Knowledge is power and this book gives one the ability too deduce their own symptoms prior to consulting a physician. It took me a year and half to find out I had ALS. It mimics several different maladies and is difficult to diagnose, especially in the early stages of the disease.
