About the Author
For more than 30 years, Stuart McRobert has revealed how to achieve bodybuilding and strength training success. He has done this through his books, about 700 articles in newsstand muscle magazines, and 15 years as the editor of Hardgainer, a bodybuilding magazine.
This blue-ribbon author is one of the most respected writers in the genre of weight training. Although Stuart has been extensively published in the mainstream bodybuilding world, his guidance is most definitely not mainstream. Conventional training methods don't work well for most trainees.
McRobert is not an armchair coach. Without drugs, and with just normal genetics, he built 45 pounds of muscle, transformed his physique, and deadlifted 400 pounds for a set of 20 reps. He still practices what he teaches, and as he approaches age 60 he continues to be strong, lean, flexible, and fit.
Stuart has a degree in education, over 40 years experience of training himself, over 30 years experience of guiding others, and is the author of five books on physique transformation: Brawn, Beyond Brawn, The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique, Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great, and the first book of the New Brawn Series: How to Build up to 50 Pounds of Muscle the Natural Way.

Essential reading. An excellent book.

If you could own only one bodybuilding, health and fitness book, which would it be? The second edition of “Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Look Great” by Stuart McRobert would be my choice. Over the years, I have read hundreds of training books, magazines and articles, but this particular book is, in my opinion, the best by far. It pulls all the essential information together and describes a practical and realistic approach that will suit almost everyone.
I once heard bodybuilding described as a ‘sport, an art and a lifestyle’. I think the word, ‘lifestyle’ is key, and McRobert’s book, as the title suggests, prescribes a way of life to help you look great.
The book’s guidance, with the appropriately described modifications and adjustments, will work for all levels of training experience, from novice to advanced. I have enjoyed bodybuilding training for over 25 years, and been runner up two times in natural contests in Scotland. Several years ago, I bought all the books in the author’s “Brawn” series, and the first edition of “Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Look Great”. Only by following McRobert’s methods did I achieve good results and reach a level that enabled me to enter physique competitions.
This, then, is the second edition of “Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Look Great” and includes some considerable improvements over the first edition. The big change is the all-new Chapter 17 (the training programme), and some of the sections of exercise technique have been rewritten. However, the underlying theme in all of the author’s books remain constant – abbreviated routines, correct exercise technique, hard work, good nutrition, and adequate recovery time.
We are living in complex times, and this complexity applies to health and fitness. There is perhaps too much choice, when all we want are simple answers. The modern gym is a good example. There is so much equipment these days that it can be impossible to know where to start. In supermarkets, it can be a struggle to pick out healthy food from a multitude of aisles. McRobert’s book helps to resolve these problems.
The book reveals all the essential exercises that work the entire body, with clear instruction on their performance. There is a fascinating section on nutrition, and cardio training and fat loss are simplified too. All of that, coupled with sections on stretching, rest and recuperation, complete the picture . . . the lifestyle.
The author has written other major books, and has had over 500 articles published. The training routines he promotes have a long tradition for success when implemented properly.
So, if you have room for just one book in your gym bag, look no further, this is it.

Must have for a puzzled novice as the complete guide on getting fit & muscled

This one gives everything a novice in excercising should know. All the variables of the equation "how to get and stay lean and muscled" are reviewed here = sleep, diet, excercising. To the least relevant detail. And it comes from the author who has 40 years of lifting experience, the author accepted and advocated for by, I suspect, many thousnads of "normal Joe" lifters.
And the author stands among such well-known guys as John McCallum and Mark Rippertoe to name few.
So the book is all the beginners need to have at first. As you progress in weights and in the lifestyle you would buy other books but this one clearly covers everything a beginner needs to know and do.
